Ugarup is a preindustrial, moderate population water world with over a hundred million, but not yet at a billion sophonts in population size.

  • Its surface is 90% or more covered in an ocean of water.
  • The inhabitants of this world live on the roughly 10% of exposed land mass, in underwater colonies, on city ships, or similar arrangements.
  • As a preindustrial world, this planet cannot yet manufacture enough high-technology resources to support a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
  • This is a "high technology" world with technology achievements at, near, or over technology standards for Charted Space.
  • This is a temperate world, with a climate of pleasant, average temperatures, considered to be an ideal or near-ideal environment by many different sophont species.
  • This world is a "Twilight Zone World", a planet that is tidally-locked to its star. It has a hot side that permanently faces the star, a cold side that permanently faces away, and a narrow twilight zone in-between.
  • It is a member of the Third Imperium in the Ultima Subsector of Solomani Rim Sector in the Domain of Sol.
  • It is the homeworld of the Gurungan, a sophont species and minor race as well as an aquatic race.
  • This world has a colony at Morgana (world).

Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]

The planet is tidally locked to its primary star and constant storms form in the twilight band that lies between the hot day face and freezing night face.

  • Non-Gurungan are restricted to the Human Enclave located on the island city that also houses the downport.

Native Sophont (NIL): Gurungans[edit]

The Gurungans are a pseudo-octopoidal race of aquatic hexapods, who strongly value their privacy after an initial period of exploitation by outside species. Their homeworld and colonies are largely under imperial stewardship and controls. While largely insular and isolationist, an increasing number of Gurungans have been engaging in interstellar trade and even intercultural exchanges, especially with other aquatic species with whom environmental accommodations are more easily managed.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Ugarup is an Imperial water world located in Ultima Subsector of the Solomani Rim.

Like many lesser Vilani client races, the native Gurungan were casually integrated into the Rule of Man by the Terrans, and then largely ignored. They colonised one nearby world (Morgana) but lost contact with it during the Long Night.

Ugarup was eventually re-contacted by the Imperial Scout Service and later by Easter Concord traders, and renewed contact with its colony on Morgana. Ugarip eventually joined the Third Imperium. A large trading enclave was established on an island, and the world accepted a non-resident noble. During the Solomani era, commercial and political relationships with local Humans soured and the Gurungan retreated underwater, closing their enclave. They resurfaced to renew their relationship with the Imperium after the Solomani Rim War, the end of which saw them situated on the Imperial side of the border.

Government[edit]

The native Gurungan are ruled by a cohesive world government presided over by a queen -- the All-Mother -- and a ruling tribunal that exercises routine legislative and executive power.

Economy[edit]

  • Exports: Many luxury foodstuffs and natural pharmaceuticals derived from the planet's rich oceanic life.
  • Imports: High-technology industrial goods adapted to the Gurungan form and environment, especially those difficult to manufacture underwater. Starting around 1000, the Gurungan have purchased deep-water robotic construction equipment, fusion reactors of all sizes, and Gurungan-adapted System Defence Boats and starships.

The Gurungan avoid exclusive contracts with single megacorporations, preferring instead to foster a highly competitive atmosphere.

Urbanization[edit]

Most Gurungan live in vast underwater city and factory complexes that burrow deep beneath the ocean floor.

Demographics[edit]

Of the 100,000,000 residents, around 95% or more are Gurungan.

Imperial High (Landed) Nobility[edit]

Ugarup, as a member world of the Third Imperium, holds the estates of three members of the Imperial Nobility, who are charged with overseeing the world.
