Tarken is a low-population water world, which has 90% or more of its surface covered in an ocean of water and a population of less than 10,000 sophonts.
- The inhabitants of this world live on the roughly 10% of exposed land mass, in underwater colonies, on city ships, or similar arrangements.
- It is a member of the Third Imperium in the Mimiuudlika Subsector of Verge Sector in the Domain of Ilelish.
- The core of this world is tidally locked to its stars. The fluid surface is in constant motion.
- This is a cold world with an overall climate that is at the lower temperature range of human-congruous sophont endurance.
Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]
Tarken is a binary star system.
- Both are red main sequence stars.
- They are close companions.

System Data[edit]
The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld.
- x7 secondary rocky worlds.
- x1 planetoid belt.
- x4 gas giants.
Mainworld Data[edit]
Tarken has a circumbinary orbit, circling around both stars and receiving their combined energy output.
- It orbits towards the outer edge of their combined habitable zone.
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Tarken is a Big World between 13,600km and 15,200km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 1G and 1.3G. The horizon will appear about 5.4km away. Vessels with only 1G of thrust should avoid landing on this world.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Tarken has a pressure of 1.50 to 2.49 atmospheres. While a Dense Atmosphere requires no survival gear this atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds which requires the use of a Filter Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–3 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.
- It experiences low temperatures.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Tarken has 95-100% of its surface covered by liquid water with only a few islands and archipelagos. Wilderness refueling is possible. Such worlds are Water Worlds or Ocean Worlds.
Seawater freezes into vast unstable icebergs as it moves across the dark face of the world. The sea-ice melts as currents move it into the bright face of the world.
- The twilight zone regions are littered with pack ice and and crumbling icebergs.
Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]
No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.
(Blank map, predominantly watery world.)
Native Lifeforms[edit]
The world has primitive aquatic native life, occupying a number of ecological niches. Most species are microscopic: the most sophisticated organisms are large mudworms that inhabit the seabeds in shallow regions, filtering nutrients from the churning, silty waters.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
An immense, dark, poisonous water world, Tarken sits at the outside edge of its two star's combined habitable zone, kept warm by the thick, smoggy air. While the rocky core of the world is tidally locked to the stars, the water and air here is in constant motion, keeping Tarken from the usual fate of tidally locked worlds. One result is that the seas are extremely silty, and there is no land of note anywhere on the planet. The Starport, such as it is, occupies one of the few islands near the cold pole of Tarken.
Tarken's 8,000 permanent residents are a hardly lot, using grav platforms and primitive "airboats" to move about the sludgy and slushy cold polar waters. Due to misguided terraforming attempts in the distant past, the seas are home to a host of primitive sea life, which is filtered out of the waters and used as feedstock for the food vats which feed the locals and form Tarken's only significant export.
The Knight Resident here functions as the Portmaster and, by request, primary judiciary authority. Neither job keeps her particularly busy.[2]
Tarken was never incorporated into the Ziru Sirka. Its status under the Rule of Man remains unclear.
World Starport (St)[edit]
Tarken has a Class D Starport, a poor quality installation which has few of the expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
World Population (P)[edit]
Tarken has a population of 8,000 sophonts (thousands).
- This is a Low Population World and the population would be too low to sustain itself without a little outside assistance. This may represent the home base of a sizable but mostly transient population such as the base of a major starship expedition, the last generation of a dying colony, the first generation of a new colony, or a large outpost that will probably evolve into a colony if not stopped.
World Technology Level (T)[edit]
Tarken possesses a Technology Level of TL–9.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Fiber optics and satellite communication and data networks.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fusion power.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Ultra high-speed trains and early grav vehicles.
- Water: High efficiency sailcraft, multihulled seacraft, improved artificial gills.
- Air: Tiltrotorcraft, exotic VTOL's, PARWIG, and rocket-assisted suborbitals.
- Space: SSTO spacecraft, early military spacecraft (System Craft), and interstellar STL starships
- FTL: Prototype Jump Drive-1.
World Government (G)[edit]
Tarken is governed by a Participatory Democracy where eligible voters determine laws and policy. What determines an eligible voter varies. There may be smaller councils or regional bodies to write the policies voted on. Leadership of the government and all members of the bureaucracy are determined by voting population.
World Law (L)[edit]
Tarken has no law in practice. It is an Anarchy. On many worlds, this by itself justifies an Amber Zone advisory. There are few laws, covering only important areas. There may be few or no law enforcement officers, the expectation is citizens will bring law breakers to the attention of the Judicial system. Legal proceedings will be fast, with few people involved. For interactions outside of the framework of the laws, cultural norms dominate.
Imperial High (Landed) Nobility[edit]
Tarken, as a member world of the Third Imperium has a member of the Imperial Nobility overseeing the world.
Trade Data[edit]
- Importance: -2 (very unimportant)
World Economy[edit]
- Resources: A (abundant)
- Labor: 2 (hundreds)
- Infrastructure: 0 (non-existent)
- Efficiency: -5 (extremely poor)
World Culture[edit]
- Heterogenity: 1 (monolithic)
- Acceptance: 1 (extremely xenophobic)
- Strangeness: 1 (very typical)
- Symbols: 4 (concrete)
World Timeline[edit]
Major events that have affected this world and the wider region that it lies within:
- -4045 to -2204: the Ziru Sirka claims and settles worlds across the region.
- -2404 to -2215: the Interstellar Wars.
- -2204 to -1776: the Rule of Man administers the worlds of the region.
- -1776 to 0: the Long Night. There is widespread regression within the area. Many worlds become barren.
- The Year 0: the Third Imperium is founded.
- 300-420: the First Survey charts the system.
- 604 to 622: the Imperial Civil War. The region suffers disruption and widespread economic issues.
