System Data[edit]

The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:

Mainworld Data[edit]

Mainworld Size (S)[edit]

Phen is a Meso World between 7,200km and 8,800km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.4G and 0.57G. The horizon will appear about 4km away.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]

Phen has a pressure of 0.71 to 1.49 atmospheres. While a Standard Atmosphere does not require survival gear this atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds which requires the use of a Filter Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–3 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]

Phen has 75-85% of its surface covered by liquid water with a few large continents and extensive islands. Wilderness refueling is possible.

  • Close to the terminator, the oceans are littered with icebergs and pack ice.

Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]

No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Comp-Prog-Dav-R-Deitrick-Starter-Trav-Page-16 16-July-2018a.jpg

Tidally locked to its star, Phen has an incredibly hot, arid dayside, a chilly ice-covered nightside, and between them a ring of perpetually windy ocean dotted with relatively temperate islands and archipelagos. Hot winds from the dayside keep the nightside from completely freezing over, while cold nightside air flows across the the worlds oceans towards the hot face. The starport occupies a large island, an area of scoured bedrock lying on the nightside, just beyond the terminator.

Originally settled with aquaculture and deep ice research in mind, Phen has developed over thousands of years into an accepting but quirky society, with many traditions and customs unique to the world. Perhaps regarding the world as a challenge, early settlers chose to create most of their cities under the dayside, making use of the free solar power to built to their needs. The cities are connected by subsurface rail lines to each other and to more hospitable areas. All cities also have deep vaults that are designed as natural cooling systems, should technology fail. Aquaculture thrives in the mineral rich open waters of the terminator zone, while the near nightside lands and ice-covered waters support a variety of imported cold-tolerant life. [2]

World Starport (St)[edit]

Phen has a Class B Starport, a good quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and most kinds of repair, and construction of non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

World Population (P)[edit]

Phen has a population of 60,000,000 sophonts (tens of millions).

World Technology Level (T)[edit]

Phen possesses a Technology Level of TL–10 or TL-A in Hexadecimal Notation.

World Government (G)[edit]

Phen is governed by a Civil Service Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government is another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy leadership influences policy. The government leadership may select the bureaucracy leadership, but not its membership. Usually the governmental leadership is divided, or incapable of setting policy and the bureaucracy provides a stabilizing influence. The bureaucracy may be the full government bureaucracy or a section with limited jurisdiction but considerable influence like the military.

World Law (L)[edit]

Phen has a moderate law level with laws covering many areas of government and interaction. These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials will be present, but not in great numbers. All firearms, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.

Imperial High (Landed) Nobility[edit]

Phen, as a member world of the Third Imperium, holds the estates of three members of the Imperial Nobility, who are charged with overseeing the world.

Trade Data[edit]

  • Importance: 3 (ordinary)

World Economy[edit]

  • Resources: C (very abundant)
  • Labor: 6 (millions)
  • Infrastructure: C (very extensive)
  • Efficiency: +3 (improved)

World Culture[edit]

  • Heterogenity: 7 (discordant)
