Gravitic Drive

The Gravitic Drive, or G-Drive, a TL–8+ gravity control based technology used as a Maneuver Drive in Starships. Also known as Grav-Drive or ContraGravity-Drive.

Description (Specifications)

The Gravitic Drive is a less efficient version of the M-Drive. Usually powered by an integral Fusion+, it does not require a separate Power Plant.

G-Drives are governed by the 10D limit, and are best suited to operation near worlds (or near stars). Beyond the 10D limit, G-Drives operate at 1% efficiency.

Gravitic Drives are not generally put to use as primary maneuver drives, as they are not meaningfully useful outside of a gravity well. Their primary use is Small Craft and high-speed Grav-Craft. By 10 diameters out from a planet, the ContraGravity drive is virtually worthless. Ships that use Gravitic Drives typically need another form of maneuver drive to get out to jump distance, unless they plan to coast with micro-acceleration for a significant period.

History & Background (Dossier)

The second major breakthrough is artificial gravity (aka "pseudo-gravity"). Created by manipulating subatomic forces, artificial gravity is not anti-gravity but is instead a unique force that acts upon the natural gravity field created by all matter. Artificial gravity can be made to either push or pull. Because of its nature, artificial gravity is not a very efficient means of locomotion in deep space where there are no strong gravity wells to push against.
