Class A starports within the Distant Fringe construct and maintain starships of all kinds.

Specifications

All starports have a maximum capacity.

Navy and Military

  • The total military jump-capable Fleet-in-being (the Navy) may not exceed the total listed capacity of the class A starport. Any amount of additonal military starships may be held in reserve (mothballed) but may not become active until sufficient starport capacity is available.
    • This closely corresponds to the character of the planetary government, whether the world is considered to be at war or at peace, and the percentage of its annual budget that the government expends on defense: this is expressed as the Government Modifier.
    • An important factor is the local population. Taxes sourced from them fund the navy, and the population provides the workforce required to manufacture and maintain starships. Ports located on higher population worlds have correspondingly larger navies.

Commercial

Commercial Capacity represents the total displacement tonnage of commercial shipping that the starport is considered to support. Such shipping is recorded as using the facilities at the port for their annual maintenance.

By totalling the net displacement tonnage of commercial starships that have been built or undergone maintenance, or noted as having been written off, scrapped or otherwise taken out of service, a reasonable estimate of the total overall commercial shipping using that port can be calculated.

Total Mercantile Capacity

Total recorded displacement tonnage of commercial ships having undergone annual maintenance at Halcyon Sector ports: 36,280,500 dTons

Total recorded displacement tonnage of commercial ships having undergone annual maintenance at Far Home Sector ports: 91,577,450 dTons

Those figures can provide an approximate overall displacement tonnage of shipping operating within the Distant Fringe region.

The total displacement tonnage of operational commercial shipping within the Distant Fringe is reckoned to be around 127.8 million dTons.
  • The true total tonnage of starships is certainly substantially greater, with many ships mothballed, in long-term storage, getting by on unrecorded frontier maintenance, or otherwise out of service.
  • Commercial starships include paramilitary vessels operated by Starmercs and Security organisations. The presence of such groups may significantly increase the number of armed combat-ready vessels within a starport.
