Upilsar is a nonindustrial desert hellworld with a population struggling to survive in an inhospitable environment.

  • Hellworlds often offer daily, and sometimes hourly, life-threatening situations to their inhabitants. Survivors often form intense survival skills and tend to be grim realists.
  • This world has no free-standing water.
  • It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
  • This is a "low technology" world with technology competencies well below technology standards for Charted Space.
  • This world is a "Twilight Zone World", a planet that is tidally-locked to its star. It has a hot side that permanently faces the star, a cold side that permanently faces away, and a narrow twilight zone in-between.
  • It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Siridor Subsector of Mavuzog Sector.

Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]

The Upilsar system lies on the spinward side of Mavuzog Sector.

System Data[edit]

A diagram indicating the positions of all of the major worlds and satellites in the system. Distances are noted in AU.

Inner System
The innermost three worlds, including the mainworld, have an orbital resonance of 4:2:1 with one another. For every one orbit the outermost of the three world completes, the mainworld completes exactly two orbits, and the inner world completes exactly four orbits.

Outer System
Two of the four outer rocky worlds are Gas Dwarfs, huge planets that retain gigantic hydrogen-rich atmospheres.

  • They are so-called "failed Neptune" worlds that were unable to gather enough material during their formation to become a small gas giant (SGG).
  • Their extreme atmosphere is denoted by Code F in their UWP. In this case, it denotes a gigantic atmosphere thousands of kilometers thick, containing a large amount of hydrogen, and with extremely high surface pressures.

Jump Shadow[edit]

The Jump Shadow of the star lies at 0.517 AU. The mainworld orbits at 0.20 AU, approximately 0.32 AU / 47.9 million km within the safe jump distance.

  • "Arrive and Stop" assumes an inward journey: the ship exits jumpspace at 0.517 AU / 100 stellar diameters with broadly the same relative motion as the mainworld. It accelerates to a halfway point, then decelerates to orbit around the mainworld.
  • "Arrive at Full Speed" assumes an outward journey: the ship departs orbit around the mainworld and continuously accelerates out to 0.517 AU, initiating jump when it arrives at a safe distance without slowing down.

Mainworld Data[edit]

Upilsar has been designated the mainworld.

Mainworld Size (S)[edit]

This world is a Meso World between 7,200km and 8,800km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.4G and 0.57G. The horizon will appear about 4km away.

  • Upilsar has a lower than average density.
  • Vast networks of caves exist deep below the surface.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]

This world has a pressure of 0.71 to 1.49 atmospheres. While a Standard Atmosphere does not require survival gear this atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds which requires the use of a Filter Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–3 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.

  • The primary taints are fine airborne dust and an almost complete absence of water vapor in the air.
    • Breathing the air without a filter mask will cause coughing and choking.
    • The lack of water vapor in the air causes moist body tissues (such as the eyes, the sinuses, and the nose and throat) to rapidly dry out. This can be alleviated by the use of protective equipment such as goggles.

Violent dust storms extending from the surface to high in the stratosphere engulf whole regions of the world and can last for weeks.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]

This world has no free-standing water or ice on the surface. Wilderness refueling isn't possible on this world. Water for the inhabitants needs to be imported and extensively recycled. These worlds are classified Desert World or a Hell World depending on their atmosphere.

  • Deep subsurface aquafers are known to exist.

Satellites:[edit]

None.

Mainworld Geography & Topography[edit]

Upilsar is an extremely smooth-surfaced world, with few highland or lowland regions.

  • No point on the surface is more than 7500 meters above the mean surface level.
  • No point on the surface is more than 600 meters below the mean surface level.

Upilsar World Map Basic.png

Despite its relatively flat and uniform surface, Upilsar has a wide variety of terrain. This topograghy includes arid plateaus, low hills, hollows and depressions, canyons, wind-carved ravines and badlands, dust deserts, dune seas, bare bedrock, and endless gravel plains.

With few surface features to slow or deflect them, winds can reach very high speeds.

  • Windstorms are laden with fine dust and grit.

Native lifeforms[edit]

Primitive subterranean native life. Although the exact processes remain unclear, their metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Upilsar is an arid and desolate backwater.

World starport[edit]

Upilsar has a Class D Starport, a poor quality installation which has few of the expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World technology level[edit]

Upilsar possesses a Technology Level of TL–3.

World Government[edit]

Upilsar is governed by a Civil Service Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government is another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy leadership influences policy. The government leadership may select the bureaucracy leadership, but not its membership. Usually the governmental leadership is divided, or incapable of setting policy and the bureaucracy provides a stabilizing influence. The bureaucracy may be the full government bureaucracy or a section with limited jurisdiction but considerable influence like the military.

World Law[edit]

Upilsar has an extreme law level which covers every area of interaction. Laws are complex, detailed, and difficult to understand. Every interaction with the government requires an Advocate. Law enforcement is omnipresent and strict. Legal proceeding can take months to years to resolve and may involve dozens of people. A few worlds with this law level may be a Red Zone and others will be an Amber Zone. All objects specifically manufactured as weapons are typically regulated or prohibited (with no exception for private residences; visiting starships are only protected so long as they stay within designated starports and approach corridors).

World Military[edit]

The government maintains a small well trained professional army, the Upilsar Defense Regiment.

  • The Regiment is divided into three battalions.
  • The UDR fields approximately 1,500 troops and is equipped with imported TL–7 weapons and gear.

World Economy[edit]

  • Resources 5 (Scarce)
  • Labor 5 (Hundreds of thousands)
  • Infrastructure 6 (Very limited)
  • Efficiency -1 (Below average)

Trade Data[edit]

Upilsar has few natural resources and almost no industry.

World Demographics[edit]

Population 7,000,000

World Culture[edit]

  • Homogeneity 4 (Harmonious)
  • Acceptance 6 (Xenophobic)
  • Strangeness 4 (Somewhat distinct)
  • Symbols 6 (Somewhat concrete)

Historical Data[edit]

The world was originally settled in the early 600s and grew to some 2,000 inhabitants. The outpost was abandoned around 30 years later, for reasons that remain unknown.

  • Much of the original outpost was constructed using subsurface caverns.
  • The surface remains of the original outpost have been buried under centuries of wind-blown dust and sand.
  • The fate of the inhabitants has never been determined.

World Timeline[edit]

  • ca 400: first known survey (retrieved from a Talokani data archive).
  • ca 600: the first recorded outpost is established on the world.
  • ca 630: the first outpost is abandoned.
  • ca 780: the current settlement is established.

UWP Listing[edit]

Survey data dating to the early 400s lists Upilsar's UWP as X570000-0 Ba De He

The settlement dating to the early 600s changed Upsilar's UWP to E570322-6 De He Lo

After its abandonment, Upilsar became a dieback world with a UWP of X570000-6 De Di He
