The climate of Kusyu shifted dramatically about 1.8 million years ago. Though the cause is uncertain, the archaeological and geological evidence is clear. This alteration in climate resulted in a sudden change in atmospheric content from one with a heavy sulfurous taint to one with a far higher carbon dioxide content. At the same time, average planetary temperature seems to have increased by several degrees, accompanied by a subsequent decrease of annual rainfall. Likewise at this time, Kusyu seems to have suddenly developed magnetic poles and the species diversity dramatically decreased. It is not clear whether these significant changes were the result of natural events (such as the stellar evolution of Tyeyo's companion star, Saietaie, into its current white dwarf form) or the result of some type of technological interference. Notably, no Asian artifacts dating from prior to the climatic shift have ever been discovered. The only suggestion that anything like the Asian lived before the great change comes from the fragmentary, fossilized remains of unintelligent four-limbed carnivores dubbed "Uealwokh".

Kusyu has two major continents, both in the same hemisphere, and both straddling the equator. Several large archipelagoes lie off the continents' shores. North and south polar ice-caps, anchored by island groups, cover about 15% of the total world surface.

Locations

Of particular geosocial interest is the fact that Kusyu has no capital, per se.

• Hyufteirlerye Cities:
  • Each clan has its own hyufteirlerye - the word refers to a meeting place and could be translated as "city" - but there is no one city or administrative center which speaks for the entire planet. Individual cities are identified with specific clans (Huiha), and each clan large enough to control several such cities generally has one htahyu, a "first place", where judgements are made, challenges accepted, and records kept.

• Tlaukhu:
  • The Aslan "Council of the Twenty-nine", the Tlaukhu, meets periodically at agreed-upon sites in rotation. The Great Meeting Hall of the Tlaukhu is located within the L'Ihahtoi ("Floating Gardens") Complex at Firuahfahr Starport.

• Firuahfahr Starport:
  • The principal starport is Firuahfahr, an excellent class-A facility on the south coast of the continent of Tafohti. The site is perhaps the closest thing on Kusyu to an international city, since all the major clans and many of the minor ones maintain trading and mercantile houses here, convenient to the port. The port itself is directly administered by the Tlaukhu, which maintains a legal presence within the floating complex known as the L'Ihahtoi ("Floating Gardens").

• L'Ihahtoi ("Floating Gardens"):
  • Being a tourist attraction as much as a practical structure, the Floating Gardens is a vast, saucer-shaped building hanging 2 kilometers above the starport's ground terminal. Housed here are certain administrative functions of the starport as well the world's principal human enclave. Hotels, bars, shops, restaurants, and other facilities catering to humans and other non-Aslan line the gaily decorated boulevards.

• Other notable places of interest on Kusyu include:
  • The Cataracts of Saukhaeeah Falls, cutting through crystal-encrusted cliffs along the upper reaches of the Tiyrl River.
  • The Plains of the Hero, watered by the Hkai River, hold special meaning for Aslan as the location of the Battle of Uktaihelu, the Hkaiyerlikhelu of legend.
  • The isolated splendor of the Mountain City of Stausye'asarereah provides a breath-taking panorama of the terrain below.
  • The Five Cities of Aslan Legend on the Tafohti Continent allow you to drink deeply of Aslan history and lore.

• Near Orbit Complexes:
  • Kusyu Moons : Kusyu has two natural satellites, Aoshi ("Swift Spirit") and Aoka'ah ("Slow Spirit"). Both are planetoids with diameters of only about 400 kilometers. As such, they appear merely as bright stars from the surface of the planet. There is little to interest outsiders, here.
    • The innermost moon, Aoshi, is characterized by its multi‑clan naval base. It orbits at 51,000 km
    • While the outermost moon Aoka'ah is a barren sphere. It orbits at 96,000 km
  • LaGrange Highports of Kusyu: In addition, there are numerous orbital facilities, including two large habitats in what would be the inner LaGrange positions (L1 points), if the moons were more massive.

Native Lifeforms

The world is much like Terra in many respects, with similar mass, density, and gravity. The mean surface temperature is somewhat cooler, but the minimal axial tilt and orbital eccentricity results in a stable, year-round climate with a continuous growing season.

Kusyu's equatorial temperatures are quite comfortable for humans. The slightly larger land surface area has resulted in greater desert and tundra regions than on the Solomani homeworld. Despite the extreme territorial nature of Kusyu's natives, large tracts of less hospitable land have been kept as wilderness.

Kusyu's temperate regions are characterized by broadleafed plant life, heavily pigmented a blue-green color. This lush flora, rich in color and form, tends to give much of the planet's surface a jungle-like feel.

Flora:

• Tuiweaftokeataeh: A tall, fruiting tree
• Ketri'eaeo: A fruiting tree
• T'khearl: A tree with great ceremonial importance.

Fauna:

• Afeahylhtow (known to Humans as the batsting, winger, or falconbat); flying animals domesticated by Aslan hunters long before they achieved star flight.
• Atekteia: Poisonous insects who lay their eggs in aua dung.
• Aua: A staple livestock.
• Aua'ka: Huge, dangerous animals rare outside reservations.
• Ayakhyulr: A carnivore known for both its speed and its ferocity.
• Hleakakhea: An air-breathing aquatic animal living in warm coastal estuaries across the planet.
• Khta: Fast-moving predators that the Aslan have domesticated and trained to use as mounts.
• Stii: Small furry simian-like creatures about the size of a human child; omnivorous scavengers. The Aslan consider them a tasty snack and also keep them as living garbage disposals in small communities.
• Syo: A flightless avian, native to the equatorial regions.
• Yoois: ("meat-worms"); a common reducer invertebrate.

World Starport

Kusyu has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

World Demographics

Kusyu has a population of 4.6 billion, which includes the population of the artificial satellites and of several undersea colonies. There are less than 600,000 non-Aslan on Kusyu.

The common language on Kusyu is Trokh.

Urbanization

Aslan architecture tends to the organic and the rounded. They favour artistry over efficiency in the design of their buildings -- every Aslan structure is different. Even in mass-produced housing, residents will strive to make their territory uniquely theirs.

• Since Aslan descend from predators and enjoy open terrain, their buildings often feature both open rooms of great size and a number of concealed rooms, balconies, hidden passageways and hideaways.

Kusyu has a Balkanized Government. There is no central world government. The world has several governments competing for control of the world. These may be allies, cooperating, competitors, or at war with each other.

Humans classify the government of Kusyu as civil service bureaucracy, but Aslan classify the nature of the government as split control, similar in nature to a “balkanized” government for humans. All of the 29 Tlaukhu clans (and about 300 others) have landholds on Kusyu.

World Law Level

Weapons restrictions are about equivalent to human law level 4 (military weapons prohibited).

Criminal acts are rare but not unheard of in Aslan society. Crimes are different from the insults or slurs that provoke duels, and are classified into three categories: crimes of passion, crimes with victims, and crimes of honour.

• Crimes of passion involve misbehavior prompted by temper, anger, or provocation. The accused is judged by the head of the family, pride, or clan involved.
• Crimes with victims involve taking money or items of value, or violating the person of another for profit (kidnapping, terrorism, piracy). General practice is to have an impartial earleatrais consider the case and present findings.
• Crimes of honour involve failure to observe the rituals established for social behaviour. Judgement is made by the pride or clan head, depending on the severity of the crime. Crimes of honour are the most serious in Aslan society; in practice, most are never tried as a duel to the death occurs first.
