Icy Cold is a poor, nonindustrial world.
- As a nonindustrial world, it requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. The need to import most manufactured and high technology goods drives the price of these goods up in the open market.
- This world has few prospects for economic development.
- It is a member of the Talpaku Communality in the Fjords Subsector of Tsadra Sector.
- It is a chilly tundra world, with a climate of low temperatures.
Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]
Stellar Data[edit]
Icy Cold is a binary star system.
- The primary is a white main sequence.
- The secondary is an orange main sequence.
System Data[edit]
The worlds of the system have been partially surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld.
- An unknown number of secondary rocky worlds.
- x1 planetoid belt.
- x1 gas giant.
Mainworld Data[edit]
The mainworld orbits within the star's Habitable Zone.
- It lies within the zone's colder outer H- region.
- It receives lower levels of stellar energy.
- The world orbits beyond the star's Jump Shadow.
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Icy Cold is a Meso World between 7,200km and 8,800km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.4G and 0.57G. The horizon will appear about 4km away.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Icy Cold has a pressure of 0.10 to 0.42 atmospheres. The very thin pressures require a respirator or Oxygen Mask. This atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds, which requires the use of a Filter Respirator Combination Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–5 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.
- It experiences low temperatures.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Icy Cold has 25-35% of its surface covered by liquid water. It has a few small seas. Wilderness refueling is possible. Water for the inhabitants will be recycled.
- The seas are crusted with pack ice.
Satellites[edit]
Icy Cold retains a single vacuum moon.
- It orbits once every few weeks.
Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]
No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.
(Blank map, predominantly dry world.)
Native Lifeforms[edit]
Abundant native life occupying a wide range of ecological niches. Its metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.
- Native lifeforms are cryophilic -- they thrive in low temperatures.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Talpaku colonies are being established here. This is a haphazard effort by multiple takh (social groupings) uncoordinated by the Communality government. They are supported from the agricultural colony at nearby Dark Tower (Tsadra 3129).
World Starport (St)[edit]
Icy Cold has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which features amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
World Population (P)[edit]
Icy Cold has a population of 600,000 sophonts (hundreds of thousands).
- This is a Nonindustrial World, too small to support the complete chain of production of most goods from start to finish.
- The population almost entirely consists of Talpaku.
- A few humans and other sophonts may be encountered.
Linguistic Topography[edit]
Talpaku, a language comprised of whistles and clicks, is commonly used on the world.
- Talpaku cannot vocalize human sound, and even the most skilled humans can only poorly imitate spoken Talpaku.
- Language Translators are widely used for inter-species communication.
World Technology Level (T)[edit]
Icy Cold possesses a Technology Level of TL–8.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Fiber optics, improved telephones, and satellite communication and data networks.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Improved geothermal and improved batteries.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Advanced automobiles.
- Water: Triphibians and early artificial gills.
- Air: Improved helicopters and hypersonic jets.
- Space: Space shuttles, early space stations, and improved interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
World Government (G)[edit]
Icy Cold has a Balkanized Government. There is no central world government. The world has several governments competing for control of the world. These may be allies, cooperating, competitors, or at war with each other.
World Law (L)[edit]
Icy Cold has a moderate level with laws covering many areas of government and interaction. These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials will be present, but not in great numbers. All firearms except shotguns, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.
World Economy[edit]
Each world in the Talpaku Communality has its own currency, the values of which fluctuate against each other according to economic circumstances.
There is a "reference" unit of currency called the kuyo, which is used by the Communality government, by multistellar companies, and for transactions between individuals and companies on different worlds.
World Culture[edit]
The world lies within the Zhodani Shadow, a region strongly influenced by the society and culture of the Zhodani Consulate.
Every 9 Talpaku years, the annual Festival of Life is preceded by a 3 day Festival of Sport. This great sporting event is staged on one Talpaku planet (selected at random during the previous extended Festival). One team may be entered from each stellar system. The series is extremely popular and recordings of each match are sent away as soon as possible. Like the Tea Clippers of ancient Terra, the first ship to bring a recording of a match to a given world receives a premium price for it.
World Timeline[edit]

- 995-1065: The Second Survey charts the system.
- 1065: The Second Survey is published.
