Description (Specifications)

The Hornet class Medium Fighter was designed for service with the Bain Defense Squadron, the space force of Bain, a Solomani world lying in Spica Sector. The Hornet is a missile fighter: it generally stands off at long range and sends in barrages of missiles. Squadron tactics and massed fire are used, when possible, to help compensate for the less powerful computer performance. When they are engaged close in, the Hornets agility and armored hull offer good protection. The cockpit contains an acceleration couch that is designed to be used in conjunction with a vacc suit: the cockpit is depressurized during during combat. The lack of crew accommodations curtails its operational endurance, generally limiting it to rapid strike sorties before returning to the carrier to rearm, refuel and recharge life support.

The hull is fully streamlined and has airfoil surfaces, giving excellent atmospheric performance that is further enhanced by its onboard gravitic systems. The vessel does not have an airlock. The vessel has a sturdy retractable undercarriage, allowing surface landings.
2.	Crew	1 crew. 1 Officer (the pilot). Accessible areas of the hull are fitted with grav plates and inertial compensators and have full life support and environmental systems. There are internal monitoring and security systems throughout the vessel. Individual sections of the hull can be sealed off. There is an emergency locker.
3.	Performance	The vessel mounts a Maneuver-6 drive and a Power Plant-11, giving performance of 6-G acceleration. The ship has an agility rating of 6. The internal fuel tankage gives the power plant 4 weeks duration. The engineering section is controlled by the pilot. The machinery is not accessible.
4.	Electronics	There is a cockpit containing a pilot's acceleration couch. Adjacent to the cockpit is a Model/2 computer: no backup computer is installed. The vessel is fitted with communications equipment, a standard sensor array, and has an avionics suite. It has a transponder unit that can be deactivated on command. It is equipped with a sophisticated ECM package.

History & Background (Dossier)

The Hornet class Medium Fighter serves with the Bain Defense Squadron, the space force of Bain, a Solomani world lying in Spica Sector. It operates alongside the Aurora, Constellation and Retaliator classes of Fighters. While these elegant and purposeful craft are considered somewhat hard to handle and do not support extended duration missions, their overall performance is very good and they are popular with their crews.

The Hornet mounts the locally designed and manufactured Misery Blue anti-shipping missile. The warhead is considered underpowered, the weapon system as a whole barely passed its proofing trials, and the design is prone to problems with its guidance systems. A number of examples of the Hornet class have been sold to neighboring worlds: they are generally refitted with standard Solomani weapons packages.
