Guezdhe is a vacuum world, with no atmosphere or hydrosphere. The system supports a population of fewer than 10,000 sophonts. It is a member of Julian Protectorate in the Kakhasaek Subsector of Empty Quarter Sector and in the Rukadukaz Republic. 90% of the world's population is the Major Race Vargr. Less than 10% of the world's population is the Minor Race Bwap.

History and Background

This is one of the Notable Worlds of the Rukadukaz Republic. Originally, there were Seven Notable Worlds, not Eight. However, for a host of complex political reasons, Guezdhe was chosen to be the Eighth.

First, the original worlds were generally led and dominated by the Ovaghoun Vargr. But the Irilitok Vargr population continues to grow, while the Ovaghoun continues to diminish. After population control measures failed and it became politically impossible to directly kill off the Irilitok -- at least without sparking a major war with the rest of the Julian Protectorate -- the Ovaghoun leadership decided to shift as many of the smartest, more politically active, and wealthiest Irilitok Vargr off of Ikon (Empty Quarter 1602). The world chosen as their destination was Guezdhe, a barren and sterile world at the time.

It was hoped that the immigrant flows of Irilitok would stop coming to Ikon (Empty Quarter 1602), and instead gather at Guezdhe. To help the process along, the old starports of Ikon were broken down and relocated to Guezdhe, making it a new center of wealth and progress.

The plans basically failed, as Irilitok immigration simply increased to both worlds, and the world of Guezdhe became a major Irilitok cultural and financial center, with a thin veneer of Ovaghoun rule. (As of 993, the Irilitok still could not vote for any Republican position, despite their ever-increasing numbers and majority status on an ever-greater number of worlds.)

Guezdhe is the home of the best starship yards in the sector, and one of the best in the Julian Protectorate. That alone makes it a place worth visiting for a Traveller -- never mind the high technology, or the strong Irilitok cultural connections to the rest of the Irilitok population, both in the sector and further into Julian Space.

World Starport

Guezdhe has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

World Population (P)

Guezdhe has a population of 8,000 sophonts (thousands).

  • This is a Low Population World and the population would be too low to sustain itself without a little outside assistance. This may represent the home base of a sizable but mostly transient population such as the base of a major starship expedition, the last generation of a dying colony, the first generation of a new colony, or a large outpost that will probably evolve into a colony if not stopped.
  • The population has reduced since 990.

World Government

Guezdhe declared independence from Ikon in 977 and made it stick. Before independence, it acted as the starship dockyards of Ikon, a lucrative position it retained in its new role as equal partner.

Even without formal political rights, and despite systematic political discrimination in the sphere of interstellar politics, there were just so many Irilitok Vargr, making so much money, that their unspoken influence was completely distorting the Rukadukaz Republic as early as 990. "Perhaps you may choose to never speak of the growing elephant in the room... but that won't save you from being crushed by it"

The rise of Guezdhe as the Eighth Notable World was just one example of this -- so were the increasingly pro-Irilitok actions of the local Ovaghoun feudal technarchs, laboring to slow their inevitable displacement by Irilitok technicians. Everybody knew -- but no one cared to spell out -- that the Ovaghoun representatives of Guezdhe represented Irilitok interests, and would have a major say in what the future of the Republic would be.

World Timeline

Major events that have affected this world and the wider region that it lies within include the following:

  • -1711: Near the end of the Vargr Pillaging, the proto-Ovaghoun conquer the world of Ikon.
    • Over time, the local Vilani culturally overrun their Vargr overlords, reshaping the Ovaghoun Vargr into a distinct, almost hybridised culture.
  • -55: The Mmoannikh Accords between representatives of Logaksu Vargr and Ovaghoun Vargr societies ends a series of conflicts between the two cultures.
    • The Accords are rejected by the central Ikonaz government, leading to a shattering of the unity of the Ovaghoun.
  • 175-191: The Julian War, which sees numerous attacks on Ikon, all of which fail in breaking the homeworld of the Ovaghoun.
  • Circa 723: The Association of Good Wolves, the current government of Ikon, encourages the emigration of the working (i.e. Irilitok Vargr) classes to other, nearby worlds -- going so far as to subsidise 70% of the cost involved.
  • Circa 937-940: The Fellowship of Nobles, the current Ikonaz government, collapses.
  • 942: The Julian Protectorate and the Hegemony of Lorean formally sign the Treaty of Var-Inaka (restricting naval basing) and the Julian Concord, incorporating the Hegemony into the Protectorate.
    • The Rukadukaz insist upon a 'buffer zone' of neutral systems between their territory and the Loreans.
  • 977: Guezdhe declares independence from Ikon.
