Virtanen Subsector is Subsector O of Theron Sector.

  • It lies within Charted Space.
  • It is a sparsely settled and lawless frontier.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

(Chart sourced from Traveller Map)
(Chart sourced from Traveller Map)

Virtanen Subsector is a poorly developed backwater with a few scattered settlements.

  • The resources of the subsector are for the most part untapped.

Aslan ihatei have claimed and settled worlds along the rimward edge of the subsector.

  • There is increasing conflict between Aslan and Humans within the region.

Astrographic Features & Trade Routes[edit]

The following astrographic and commercial data has been determined regarding Virtanen Subsector:

Stellar Distribution[edit]

A basic map showing the distribution and size of stars within Virtanen Subsector, right:

  • The color corresponds to the visible color of the star, which links to its spectral classification.
  • The size as shown indicates both the physical size of the object and its relative brightness.

Note that the stars as depicted are representative. Any star, no matter what its size, is a mere speck within the hex it occupies.

  • Ordinary main sequence stars can barely be seen from even a hex away.
  • Huge, intensely luminous giant stars can be seen from across the subsector and far beyond.

Rift Regions[edit]

Three rift areas lie within the subsector: the Starsong Void, the Koronat Void, and the Great Rift.

  • The Starsong Void occupies the spinward-coreward part of the subsector.
  • The Koronat Void covers the coreward-trailing part of the subsector.
  • These are part of The Gulfs, a complex of smaller rifts and voids that form part of the Idella Rift.
  • The subsector lies on the edge of the Great Rift. It is considered to be the region where the Idella Rift and the Great Rift meet.

Locally at least, a rift is an astrographic concept based on Jump Drive performance.

The highest tech level commonly encountered out this Far Along (spinward of the Third Imperium) is TL–12, though a few worlds may be more advanced.

Aslan Exploration Route[edit]

(Chart sourced from Traveller Map)

The Aslan appear to have found a means of entering the subsector along its rimward edge.

The Clans would likely use any such route to communicate with and supply their explorers, pioneers, and scattered outposts within the region.

  • The existence of the route and the fuel cache have not been proven.

A simple map showing the likely Aslan exploration route along the Great Rift and into Theron Sector is shown right.

  • Rift regions are shown in blue.
  • Known Aslan outposts and settlements are ringed in red.

Borealis Group[edit]

The Borealis Group can be seen as a bright, dense, noticeable grouping of stars in the skies to spinward.
