The Murians of Arcturus (Vanguard Reaches 1533) are a Minor Non-Human Race with a vaguely humanoid appearance. They are technologically advanced sophonts.
Description (Specifications)[edit]
Murians are an "ursoid" race larger and stronger than most humans. Some references call them the Altareans after their nation.
Physiology & Environment[edit]
Murians exhibit poorer manual dexterity than humans. The average Murian male is 2 meters tall and weighs 105 kilograms. Although they have more body hair than humans, they do not begin to match the coat of the Vargr.
Sex is distinguishable only by colouration, with males having fur of a noticeably darker brown than females. Short legs end in a broad foot with two 'hooves' forward and a large claw at the heel; this aids in climbing. Equally short arms end in hands with four broad fingers and a thicker opposing thumb, all of which are tipped with retractable claws. Hooves, claws, bones and teeth are all composed of a black composite of chitin, calcite and proteins.
Murians breathe primarily through slits in their broad necks.
Reproduction and Lifepath[edit]
Murian females lay a single 15-centimetre egg within two weeks of conception; this hatches after three months. The hatchling is entirely helpless and traditionally fed by regurgitation from adults for two standard years. Growth to adulthood requires another 12–15 standard years. The natural Murian lifespan was once 60–80 years, but modern medical technology means that many reach ages of 100–140.
Psychology & Philosophy[edit]
As individuals, Murians are typically open, friendly, and curious with other races. They are, however, somewhat clannish and are seldom found outside their Confederation. Although their size and great patience can give the appearance of slow-wittedness, they are well-educated and very mechanically inclined. They are talented at the building and use of computers.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
The Murians are the most populous species in their native Vanguard Reaches Sector, though they are typically found only within their well-developed, technologically-advanced nation in the rimward-spinward part of the sector.
The Murian expansion into space began with the launch of sublight sleeper ships towards five nearby star systems, taking place before -500. Contact with a Corellan League trader in 102 gave them jump drive technology, allowing them to begin recontacting their colonies by 119. In 205, the Altarean Confederation was formed. Subsequently, the Confederation expanded to include the entire Altarean Main and additional nearby systems.
The five sublight colony worlds are still identified alongside Arcturus as Murian "homeworlds". These six worlds are all highly developed with A-class starports and populations in the billions, forming the backbone of the Murian realm.
Languages[edit]
Murian languages are simple and elegant, and easy for Humans to pronounce.
The homeworld of the Murians is known to Humaniti as Arcturus (due to the Ursoid appearance of the race), although the Murians never refer to the world directly by any name, just euphemisms for creation, motherhood and the day-night cycle.

Technology & Trade[edit]
Murian technology is of a high order. Technology is more evenly distributed throughout the Confederation than is typical in the Imperium.
Military & Intelligence[edit]
As a race, the Murians are non-aggressive. They have lived in peaceful proximity to the Zhodani Colonnade Province for many decades. The few real wars they have fought have been defensive in nature (usually against Aslan). Although their armed forces are efficient and well-armed, their primary job appears to be commerce protection. Their over-reliance on missiles as a space combat weapon places them at a tactical disadvantage. The Confederation poses no threat to Imperial security for the foreseeable future.
Murian Space Marines are often used for health and safety inspections. They are large, strong and intimidating, and yet gentle and patient. They are adept at sniffing out hidden cargo and smugglers are loath to see them in boarding actions.
