Mirayn is a rich world.

  • As a rich world, this planet has high-grade living conditions and is highly sought after by immigrating sophonts.
  • This world has a prosperous and thriving world economy.
  • Some of the sources of this world's wealth are well known, but others remain a mystery. Many speculate on these mysterious sources of wealth. Some even investigate them... to no avail yet.
  • It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by indigenous Sophonts located in the Jungleblut Subsector of Far Frontiers Sector.
  • This is a temperate world, with a climate of pleasant, average temperatures, considered to be an ideal or near-ideal environment by many different sophont species.
  • This die back world was once settled and developed, but the inhabitants have either died off or left, leaving behind the ruins and remnants of their civilization.
  • This is the homeworld of the Mirani (often referred to as Gogs).

Description (Astrography & Planetology)

Mirayn has a solitary primary star.

  • It is an orange main sequence.

System Data

The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:

Mainworld Data

The official planetary statistics are based on the League of Suns survey of 1049.

Mainworld Size (S)

Mirayn is a Big World between 13,600km and 15,200km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 1G and 1.3G. The horizon will appear about 5.4km away. Vessels with only 1G of thrust should avoid landing on this world.

  • Density: 0.98 standard (5.40 g/cc), Mean Surface Gravity: 1.10 G.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)

Mirayn has a pressure of 1.50 to 2.49 atmospheres. A Dense Atmosphere requires no survival gear although it may be hard on sophonts not accustomed to it.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)

Mirayn has 85-95% of its surface covered by liquid water with a few small continents, and a number of islands and archipelagos. Dry land is limited. Wilderness refueling is possible.

Mainworld Geography & Topography

Mirayn has two continents, Grenven and Momande. Swathed in low-lying cloud cover and a nearly perpetual mist, the tropical regions of Mirayn have proven virtually impossible to map in detail, even using orbital survey procedures. While modern sensors have established the broad outlines of lakes and rivers, detailed local surveys of this world can only be carried out from the surface.

Native Lifeforms

Abundant native life occupying every available ecological niche. Its metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.

The complex biosphere supports a vast variety of flora and fauna, notably:

  • Aiyankra (or Deathstalker), an apex predator,
  • Nyanarsik, massive, slug-like swamp dwellers,
  • Syanniltuk, a common beast of burden.

Native Sophont

Mirayn's natives, the Mirani – known to offworlders as Gogs – form the majority of the world's population.

  • Most avoid human settlements and human affairs, most commonly being seen only in the Outback. A few trade with the human settlements along Momande's coasts.

History & Background (Dossier)

Comp-Prog-Dav-R-Deitrick-Starter-Trav-Page-16 16-July-2018a.jpg

Mirayn is sometimes referred to as "the archaeologist's paradise", as a result of the wide variety of ruins left by a flourishing TL–3 culture some 5,000 years before.

  • Important locations include the coast of the Ulinye Sea, the Nahahnir River, and the villages of Adalanayra and Sanalaysa.

First surveyed by Frontiers Developments, Inc., and then colonized by settlers from Selaek almost four centuries ago, Mirayn was first intended as an agricultural colony. Conditions on the world hampered the growth of large-scale farming, however, leaving the planet trapped with a subsistence level economy. The lack of worthwhile raw materials prevented the formation of widespread industries as well, further hindering colonial progress.

  • Scientific interest, followed by considerable attention from offworld tourists, was sparked by the discovery of extensive ruins left by a native civilization in the coastal regions of Grenven, the first human settled continent on the planet. An even richer field of archaeological endeavor was opened when humans penetrated Momande, the larger, but also less known continent. Small settlements, the largest a city named Val Preszar, were established along the coast of Momande and began to cater to the needs of parties investigating what became known as "The Outback".
  • Investigation of various ruins has led scientists to venture the opinion that a native culture of about TL–3 flourished on both continents. The collapse of the civilization left a few scattered aboriginal savages. As these findings were published scientific interest in Mirayn faded, though tourism continued to be a fairly steady source of revenue for the government. Amateur archaeologists still made occasional visits to the planet, but by and large it dropped into obscurity.

World Starport (St)

Mirayn has a Class D Starport, a poor quality installation which has few of the expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World Population (P)

Mirani.png

Mirayn has a population of 50,000,000 sophonts (tens of millions).

  • Around 96% of the population (roughly 48 million individuals) consists of native Mirani.
  • About 4% of the population (approximately 2 million individuals) is made up of long established human settlers, largely from Selaek.

Linguistic Topography

World Technology Level (T)

Mirayn possesses a Technology Level of TL–7.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Early video and early satellite communication networks.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fuel cells, solar energy, and geothermal power sources.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
    • Land: Improved automobiles, hovercraft, and bullet trains.
    • Water: Hydrofoils and early triphibians.
    • Air: Hang gliders and supersonic jets.
    • Space: Deep space probes and interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).

World Government (G)

Mirayn is governed by Self-Perpetuating Oligarchy. A single family or small group provides the leadership and important positions within the government. These positions are inherited by members of the group or by their relatives. The organization may be a monarchy, with titles passed to family members, or a plutocracy where inheritance of the family fortune includes government position. Alternatively, the organization may be a more typical government apparatus, only with positions of power inherited.

  • The government of Mirayn is a council of ruling landowners.

World Military

Mirayn's small standing army is employed almost exclusively in the enforcement of antiquity laws.

World Law (L)

Mirayn has a moderate law level with laws covering many areas of government and interaction. These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials will be present, but not in great numbers. All firearms, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.

Trade Data

The human colony continues to support a limited amount of agriculture and some industry; most of the planetary revenue is based, however, on the various offshoots of the tourist trade.

  • Importance: -1 (unimportant)

World Economy

  • Resources: 9 (moderate)
  • Labor: 6 (millions)
  • Infrastructure: 7 (generally available)
  • Efficiency: -1 (average)

World Culture

The world lies within the Zhodani Shadow, a region strongly influenced by the society and culture of the Zhodani Consulate.

The government of Mirayn, a council of ruling landowners, is active in the promotion of tourism and takes an interest in the world's antiquities. Though they lack the manpower to themselves hunt for possible archaeological finds, the government does pay for artifacts from the Outback or the locations of major sites. Unfortunately, scales of payment are rather low, which has encouraged attempts at smuggling artifacts offworld where they command high prices among interested collectors. To combat this, the ruling council has imposed a number of strict laws against removal of antiquities from the planet. Mirayn's small standing army is employed almost exclusively in the enforcement of these laws.

The Miriani natives live traditional lives in the forests.

  • Heterogenity: 7 (discordant)
  • Acceptance: 6 (aloof)
  • Strangeness: 5 (distinct)
  • Symbols: 7 (somewhat concrete)
