The '''Katanga Empire''' is an isolationist [[pocket empire]] founded in 1014, avowedly to stem the flow of trade travelling through the subsector that "threatened its way of life." In reality the state was an extortion racket set up to milk protection money from passing ships and local companies. The plot fell through about a decade later, when the {{Imperium}} refused to give it formal diplomatic recognition, and the local planetary militias, with Avalaran support, overthrew the government. The Katanga Empire is an interstellar polity, located in the Katanga Subsector of Beyond Sector.

The Katanga Empire is an isolationist pocket empire. Its worlds were settled and ruled by the Principality of Bruhkarr for six centuries, breaking away following Bruhkarr's Succession Crisis of 615.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Passing through the Katanga Free State -- a representative democracy -- and the Katanga Peoples Combine, a direct democracy, the Katanga worlds became the Katanga Empire when General Javin Oresta took power in 630. Proclaimed emperor in a plebiscite the following year, Javin I was founder of the dynasty that continues to rule the nation as of 1105.

However, recent Emperors have had little real power. A vast bureaucracy, the Instruments of State, now governs by inertia and intrigue.

The informal economy, run by small-time entrepreneurs who often lack the proper documents to legally operate a business, provide the lifeblood of the Empire. These people flourish by means of small bribes and official indifference -- there is a well-understood series of unwritten rules defining relationships between business and government, with strict adherence to rituals that often bear no semblance to written regulation (or common sense).
