Hyperborea is a nonindustrial fluid world.

  • A fluid world has an oceanic geography consisting of heavily contaminated water or a substance such as ammonia, methane, hydrocarbons, or other exotic liquid.
  • It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
  • It is a member of the Solomani Confederation in the Euxene Subsector of Aldebaran Sector.

Stellar Data

Hyperborea is a binary star system.

  • The primary is a yellow main sequence.
  • The secondary is a red main sequence.
Hyperborea has two stars in the star system.

Mainworld Data

Hyperborea is a major moon of the large gas giant Tritia, orbiting the primary at approximately 12 AU.

  • It is tidally locked to the giant planet, with one face permanently facing the huge world and one world permanently facing away.

Mainworld Size (S)

Hyperborea is a Meso World between 7,200km and 8,800km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.4G and 0.57G. The horizon will appear about 4km away.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)

Hyperborea has an Exotic Atmosphere and possesses an unusual gas mix which requires the use of oxygen tanks. Additionally, protective suits, while not necessary, are recommended. TL–8 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)

Hyperborea has 65-75% of its surface covered by liquid water or ice heavily tainted with other substances, which makes it dangerous, corrosive, or toxic. Wilderness refueling will be difficult. Water for the inhabitants needs to be imported and extensively recycled. These worlds may be Hell Worlds.

  • The water on the surface may be unsuitable for use or consumption without extensive filtering and purification.
  • Refining for fuel may cause issues with shipboard purification plants.

Mainworld Geography and Topography

No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.

Hyperborea is a large moon, with some gravitationally-induced tectonic activity. A single contiguous methane-ethane world-ocean encircles the equator and the mid-latitudes, with landmasses occupying the northern and southern polar regions. Most surface features are from large, old asteroid impacts; smaller craters have been largely worn away by wind and the chemical rain. There are large areas covered in water-ice or exposed bedrock that are suitable for landing.

World Starport

Hyperborea has a Class B Starport, a good quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and most kinds of repair, and construction of non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

The current government has declared martial law both on the surface and on their Highport. All visiting starships are subject to immediate search. Any materials deemed strategic and/or necessary are subject to seizure without guarantee of compensation, up to and including the vessel itself.

World Technology Level

Hyperborea possesses a Technology Level of TL–9.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Fiber optics and satellite communication and data networks.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fusion power.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
    • Land: Ultra high-speed trains and early grav vehicles.
    • Water: High efficiency sailcraft, multihulled seacraft, improved artificial gills.
    • Air: Tiltrotorcraft, exotic VTOL's, PARWIG, and rocket-assisted suborbitals.
    • Space: SSTO spacecraft, early military spacecraft (System Craft), and interstellar STL starships
    • FTL: Prototype Jump Drive-1.

World Government

Hyperborea is governed by a Charismatic Dictatorship. Charismatic governments justify their ability to rule by simply asserting their right to rule. Charismatic dictatorships are typically young governments, coming as a recent change, and rely on the leader(s) to supply head of government.

World Law Level

Hyperborea has an extreme law level which covers every area of interaction. Laws are complex, detailed, and difficult to understand. Every interaction with the government requires an Advocate. Law enforcement is omnipresent and strict. Legal proceeding can take months to years to resolve and may involve dozens of people. Most worlds with this law level may be an Amber Zone or Red Zone. All objects specifically manufactured as weapons are typically regulated or prohibited (with no exception for private residences; visiting starships are only protected so long as they stay within designated starports and approach corridors). All aspects of life rigidly controlled. There is no difference between the police and the military. This world is a full-fledged police state. Oppression is legalized, though not routine.

World Military

At least 15% of the population is associated with the government military-police and their paramilitary support groups.

World Economy

The manufacturing base produces advanced plastics and plastic products using the abundant organics in the environment.

The capitol and main planetary city is the eponymously named Hyperborea City. The city is constructed of locally produced plastic infrastructure reinforced with imported advanced materials.

Trade Data

Some raw organics are exported, but the largest products are advanced plastics.

World Culture

The atmosphere is very cold but provides 1.3 standard atmospheres of pressure; thus, humans may range outside with a respirator and heavy clothing. Specialized sports native to the world are very popular.

Hyperborean culture is the product of colonization by an insular culture desiring a world of their own, where they could exclude undesirables. It appears that the term "undesirable" has evolved over time to mean different groups: non-human sophonts, humans from certain systems, etc. The precise current meaning is not clear, and represents a danger to planetary visitors.

Most citizens strongly identify by their home dome.

Early colonists endured considerable hardships due to the environment and the lack of resupply options. Survival became the overriding imperative, and as a result, the government structures have always been strong centralized dictatorships of various types. The current Governor is Beatrice Blanca, who came to power recently in successful coup d'etat after gaining the support of the paramilitary logistic groups.

Local artistic culture is rather bland, being inspired by a brutally limited set of decades-old off-world entertainment programs. There appear to be a small set of tacitly accepted underground features, but even possessing these can be used as a reason for a search-and-seizure raid.

Urbanization

Greater Hyperborea City represents the bulk of planetary infrastructure. It is constructed as collection of reinforced, interconnected plastic domes.

Passing through any portal requires an authorized passkey for that portal during a particular time period. Different priority codes largely determine if a given person or party will be searched and to what degree they will be searched for contraband. Access outside the domes is regularly granted for the population.
