The Sproutstone class Mining Drone is a TL–13 civilian industrial smallcraft able to gather ore and fuel, and assist a Grovestone class Smallcraft Tender in construction work.
Description[edit]
The Sproutstone is, first and foremost, a designated smallcraft companion for a Grovestone class Smallcraft Tender. Rarely is a Sproutstone seen in use save in direct service to a Grovestone.
It is a basic sphere, reminiscent of a pebble or a giant tree seed. It has a collapsible cargo bladder, designed to hold either unrefined fuel or chunks of raw ore, which can expand the craft by up to 5 times, increasing it from 10 displacement tons to 50. The maneuver drive is tuned to give 1-G performance in this latter case; when the cargo bladder is empty and stowed, it zips along at 5-G.
It has the basic equipment one would expect of a multipurpose drone of this nature: fuel scoops for gathering fuel, laser drills for mining, and enhanced sensors for prospecting. A significant portion of a Sproutstone's volume is taken up by a robotic arm equipped with several tools. This is useless when scooping fuel, used to grab chunks of ore when mining, or to manipulate, fabricate, and assemble parts when assisting the parent Grovestone. Perhaps its most iconic use, relative to what little fame this class has, is to carry vehicles and smallcraft between a Grovestone's work area and the nearby ground - or, when necessary, from ground to orbit (typically a Grovestone that chose to stay in orbit) and back.

| 2. | Crew | Crew: None. Pilot, Gunner, and Sensor Operator provided by software. |
| 3. | Performance | Acceleration: 5-G maneuver drive installed. When the cargo bladder is fully inflated, performance drop to 1-G.

| 6. | Armament | Twin laser drills. |
| 7. | Defenses | None. |
| 8. | Craft | None. As this drone is not ordinarily crewed, it usually carries no vacc suits or Rescue Balls. |
| 9. | Fuel Treatment | It is typically equipped with fuel scoops but no fuel purification plant. |
| 10. | Cost | MCr19.7802 (no architect's fees, the design having been made freely available). MCr17.80218 in quantity. |
| 11. | Construction Time | 3 weeks standard, 2 in quantity, if manufactured separately from a Grovestone, which rarely happens save as replacements for a Grovestone's Sproutstones. |
| 12. | Remarks | A mining drone, fuel drone, and construction assistant. |
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
See Grovestone class Smallcraft Tender. The Sproutstone class was designed as part of the Grovestone, its templates distributed as part of the Grovestone templates. Other designs work better for dedicated mining or fuel scooping duties, so they are rarely anyone's first choice for these jobs separate from a Grovestone, though there have been a few that wound up in standalone duty out of expedience.
Class Naming Practice/s & Peculiarities[edit]
Ship Interior Details: Like most smallcraft drones, a Sproutstone does not particularly have crew-accessible insides. It is tall enough that one could consider it to have two "decks", and this is shown in its blueprints.
Class Naming Practice/s: Sproutstones, when they have names at all, are named as extensions of their parent Grovestone ships. For instance, the Sproutstones operating out of the Aluminum Forest are named Aluminum Alpha and Aluminum Beta. The few not operating from a Grovestone tend to be the only one around, and so are often just called "Sproutstone".
