Character Details[edit]

Personality[edit]

An introvert and loner, John is an expert pilot in a time of failing space-transport.

Family[edit]

Other than his parents, John has few close contacts. Life as a scout has seen his path through life diverge from many that he once knew. He is an only child, and has never kept a non-work relationship together long enough to form his own family.

History & Background (Biography)[edit]

Homeworld[edit]

Gabrael/Deneb/2807 is a non-industrial world with moderate stellar technology. It has a gravity of .65G and an atmospheric taint requiring the wearing of filter masks while outdoors.

Parents and Legal Guardians[edit]

  • Isabel Drake
  • Chima Drake

Isabel and Chima met while Isabel was moving from the United Followers of Augurgh to Gabrael. Chima was a Steward aboard the free-trader on which she was a passenger. They were married by the Ship's Captain while in Jump Space between Hammand and Gabrael. Isabel became a midwife on Gabrael.

Early Years[edit]

Gabrael was always a bit lax about issuing birth certificates. The date on the paper says 355-1107 in Tsabad on Gabrael, but the location isn't entirely accurate since, his mother says, she was still in jump-space that day. But Tsabad was the nearest port and thus was the planet where Isabel Drake could first register the baby.

John has no recollection of the first few years of life, and his first real memories are of Mum and Dad at home in the lower (in so many ways) end of Vale, a suburb of Tsabad that would have preferred that their building were on the other side of the section border - in Far End.

It wasn't until John was 10 that the world really broke into the closed circle of home...Someone bad shot the Emperor and everyone seemed to want to fight everyone to take on the job. And then one of the Emperors took a load of the fleet away and some Vargr called the Federate started raiding and Dad was called up. There was some trouble at school with John's Vargr friends, and with John being friends with the Vargr - especially after the battle on Hammand.

The new Domain of Deneb then seemed to be at war with just about everyone. John was a volunteer in the college civil defence team. He helped his mother train two search dogs (real Dogs from Terra, not Vargr) and spent afternoons at the weekend lying in odd places waiting for the searchers to find and rescue him. Luckily, he never had to use his skills in earnest.

Scout Service[edit]

The IISS accepted him on his first attempt - and assigned him to Nurara Scout Base for training and operations.
(Details not for public record.)
This mission did not go well, and as a result, caused John to experience mild post-traumatic stress syndrome which has had a negative effect on his inter-personal relationships. While the service offered counselling services (and would cover 50% of the cost), John took a while to take them up on the offer. The PTSD is "Cured" but there is some mental scarring.

The IISS became the RISS and the Exploration Branch was gutted. Nurara Scout Base was Abandoned and the vessels formed into an Imperial Navy Scout Squadron for 61st Fleet: SR-612. It was in this period that the RSS Makhangam arrived at the site of the wreck of the INS Greenrock Desert and rescued 11 survivors from the crew.

In his final term, John was flying missions against the Dzarrgh Federate and the Aegzagangnthoegngvang across the Million Subsector, and neighbouring Khouth Subsector, in what was now his ageing vessel - with ever-diminishing base support and the promise that he could take the ship and go when his last mission completed. With this in mind, the ambush of the ship as it returned to Gabrael - having been stalked ever since arriving in-system - was a bitter blow.

Detached Duty[edit]

Getting to the point where the RISS could release John to detached duty was complicated by the crash of the RSS Makhangam on the first day of 1138, and the change-over of staff at the Imperial Consulate on Gabrael.
