Arnorac is a nonindustrial world, that requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society.
- In a technological universe, societies without industrial capability generally suffer as nearly all manufactured and high tech goods must be brought in at significant cost.
- As a nonindustrial world, it requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. The need to import most manufactured and high technology goods drives the price of these goods up in the open market.
- This world toils under the control of a military government with conditions reflecting that situation, including curtailed civil rights and limited freedoms.
- It is a client state of the Third Imperium in the Barker Subsector of Reft Sector.
- This world has an Imperial Naval Base, capable of handling warships.
Description (Planetology)[edit]
Stellar Data[edit]
Mainworld Data[edit]
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Arnorac is a Meso World between 7,200km and 8,800km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.4G and 0.57G. The horizon will appear about 4km away.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Arnorac has a pressure of 1.50 to 2.49 atmospheres. A Dense Atmosphere requires no survival gear although it may be hard on sophonts not accustomed to it.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Arnorac has 05-15% of its surface covered by liquid water or ice. Wilderness refueling will be difficult. Water for the inhabitants needs to be imported and extensively recycled. These worlds are Hell Worlds or Poor Worlds depending on their atmosphere.
Mainworld Topography and Geography[edit]
About 60% of the planet's surface is covered in salt, the remnants of an evaporated ocean. Proposals to refill the ocean with imported water from Schuuni or comet ice recur every few years. The Fluvant Lakes area contains about 1,000 lakes holding about 650 square kilometres of water, with various towns and villages situated in the woods nearby.
Native Lifeforms[edit]
The forests of Arnorac yield strong wood and nutritious berries.
Small game is plentiful and the lakes have modest stocks of fish and edible plants.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Arnorac was settled during the Rule of Man by one of several groups that sought to leave before the Long Night set in. The mission used tankers to shuttle the colony ships across the Great Rift. One of these ships disappeared during the transit, and the tankers were also lost. Making the most of it, the colonists settled both Arnorac and Gordon, the remaining Jump-capable ships used to maintain communications and trade between the settlements until they wore out.
Space travel and contact with Gordon were eventually reestablished, but society on Arnorac subsequently collapsed due to a series of economic and political disasters. A period of anarchy ensued, with various factions fighting over governance.
Help arrived in the form of Imperial Naval ships out of Deneb Sector. Arnorac became a client state of the Third Imperium for the simple reason that it came to be more or less owned by the Imperial Navy, which restored order to the world. Having forced a stable government onto the people of Arnorac at gunpoint, the Imperials then expected to withdraw, but instead they were requested to stay. In part this was due to the potential threat from Tezcat colonies being established elsewhere on the planet by the Lemente Ezva Har'Tez. Today, Arnorac is proudly loyal not to the Third Imperium but, specifically, the Imperial Navy.
World Starport (St)[edit]
Arnorac has a Class B Starport, a good quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and most kinds of repair, and construction of non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.
- There is an associated Imperial Naval Base.
World Population (P)[edit]
Arnorac has a population of 30,000 sophonts (tens of thousands).
- This is a Nonindustrial World, too small to support the complete chain of production of most goods from start to finish.
World Demographics[edit]
World Languages[edit]
- A'Prur
- Anglic, one of the two official languages of the Imperium.
- Arnorac (apparently derived from French)
- Vilani, one of the two official languages of the Imperium.
- Ushi, a significant dialect used throughout Gushemege Sector.
World Technology Level (T)[edit]
Arnorac possesses a Technology Level of TL–10 or TL-A in Hexadecimal Notation.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Holovision, Personal Global Communications, and advanced Translators.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Increasingly advanced fusion plants and advanced fuel cells.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land & Water: Grav belts and maturing gravcraft.
- Air: Greatly improved hybrid grav-aircraft.
- Space: Improved interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
- FTL: Jump Drive-1.
World Government (G)[edit]
Arnorac has a Captive Government or Colony. The world is ruled by an external government, there is no self-rule. This is a colony or conquered area. The local government is an oligarchy appointed by, and answerable only to, the external government.
- Arnorac's Human settlements are under military (Imperial Navy) rule.
- The planet has long been controlled by the Ostals, large and wealthy extended families. No matter who was in charge on paper, throughout history the Ostals have used patronage to reward loyal members of more humble families, known as the Mesquins. Inter-Ostal conflict occasionally rose to the level of civil war.
World Economy[edit]
Arnorac mostly exports lumber and wood products to Gordon. As links with the Imperium have strengthened, Arnorac manufacturers are starting to export boating equipment to other systems.
Products from the Rure Subsector in Gushemege that don't sell move spinward until purchased by merchants in Reft. As a result, Arnorac becomes home to many products unpopular in Imperial space. Its important functions often rely on obscure mechanical systems or long-forgotten software packages.
World Culture[edit]
Traditional Arnorac society accepts many gods, but only one god serves Arnorac. This god, Yahn, protects the people from natural disasters so long as they carry out appropriate rituals for birth, death and marriage. There is no formal priesthood, but it is generally believed that if a family appeases Yahn, its members will join the god on his world in The Anundarluu after death.
