History & Background (Dossier)
In the early days of space flight, many planets simply did not have anything like a distribution network and retail sector, small general stores were the norm. Major retailers created a fleet of large merchandising ships. These would leave a core world laden with goods, all in their massive sales floor, laid out and ready for sales. The ancillary services of a couple chain restaurants, health clinic with bionics salon, ship maintenance, financial services, mail and cargo added to the attraction to any locals. Even so, a Star*mart just could not compete with a brick and mortar store for convenience or a dropshipper on price. After regular service starts in a subsector, Star*marts are moved on to the next frontier, in a completely organic manner. Some Star*Marts have been in service in this way for several centuries.
Class Naming Practice/s & Peculiarities
Vessel Peculiarities: The expanding sales floor, loss prevention entry airlocks and so on make actual modular cargo shipments unavailable, unless the store manager has set aside some floor space for them. Each store manager can choose from several modules.
- Modules Available
- Refit yard for vehicles, small craft and light starships (typically up to 200 tons)
- Restaurant (typically 20 tons)
- Medical Outpatient Surgery and Bionics Center (typically 20 tons, with several models of each limb and organ in stock)
- Prototype and Fabrication shop (typically 20 tons)
- Secure banking facility (typically 5 tons)
Class Naming Practice/s: Most stores do not have anything but a serial number, although some Managers name the vessel after a beloved female in their family.
