The Commuter class Gig is a civilian gig.

Description[edit]

The Microliner class Gig is a solution for those travelling to and from orbital colonies and the moons of a world. It competes with the ubiquitous air/raft, although its more complex controls (designed for smallcraft operation, as opposed to grav vehicle) limits its popularity outside of sophonts used to space travel.

Being cheap, the Microliner class Gig is often flown by those with low skill. In an attempt to improve the safety record of an earlier variant, the vessel has aerofins and improved streamlining, which have been shown to aid the pilot and thereby reduce the number of crashes.

A variant known as the "SpaceRaft" increases passenger capacity from 4 to 8, at the cost of 1 ton of cargo capacity and an extra MCr0.01.

History & Background[edit]

It is known to essentially be an Airframe Hull variant of the Commuter class Gig. Beyond that, as with the Commuter, its origins are lost to time, and it is common enough to escape notice.

Technically the name "Microliner", as in one-one millionth of a liner, is incorrect. It would be closer to call it a "Milliliner". It is a mark of those who typically manufacture this, and those who purchase it, that there does not appear to have been any widespread urge to fix the name.
