The Graytch of Liigash (Gushemege 2815) are a Minor Non-Human Race with a non-humanoid appearance and technologically sophisticated sophonts.
- They are correctly called the Ga-ray-cha; "Graytch" is a human corruption.
Physical Sophontology[edit]
The arboreal Graytch have six legs. Their two arms are quite short and weak, but the hands are very flexible and delicate. Graytch bones are made of crystalline silicon, and their muscle fibers, working in both directions, give them both great dexterity and great range of motion. Though slower than humans on flat surfaces, Graytch are supreme in 3-D environments, often moving through trees faster than human runners on the ground.
Graytch mass from 75 - 125 kilograms, stand some 1.5 - 1.75 meters from ground to head, and extend about 2 - 2.25 meters from snout to rump.
Senses[edit]
Graytch ingest food through a horizontal mouth beneath their chin. Sensory glands along the inside of the mouth allow Graytch to taste and smell, but these functions are strictly optional. Graytch ears are mounted on the side of the neck.
Reproduction[edit]
There are three sexes; male, female and neuter, born in a ratio 3-3-1. Two or three times in its life, a male or female Graytch may become absent-minded and mistake-prone as they enter a thirteen-month parenting phase, but their culture has evolved to deal with these occasional sabbaticals.
The parenting phase consists first of the Cru-men-rin, a 7-month period of gestation, and then the Pos-roy-ma, a 6-month period post-birth.
Graytch grow up quickly, reaching physical maturity a mere seven months after birth, and the age of majority within two years.
The biological urge to form a family is strong during the breeding phase, but as soon as the children have passed out of the family to take their place as adults, the mother and father enter another biochemical shift. The urge for companionship is quickly replaced by feelings of revulsion. The small family disintegrates and the individuals move back into society, most likely to never contact each other again.
Cultural Sophontology[edit]
Almost all Graytch follow the non-violent teachings of Say-ta-chu, but each of the several sects looks down upon the others. Graytch are intensely curious about aliens, and despite their firm religious rivalries, are adaptive and tolerant in their dealings with other races and cultures, even suffering when they are alone.
As families are temporary affairs, business affiliations are the closest relationships Graytch have to Human family bonds. Management hierarchies can resemble blood ties, from a Human point of view. Senior managers hold the status of "family elders", and their employees grant them the appropriate respect and attention. These close bonds make Graytch business ventures slightly more organized and efficient than those of most Human cultures, if only because employee turnover is much less prevalent.
Government and Politics[edit]
See: Graytch Harmony.
The modern Graytch government, with its highly ordered and hierarchical structure, is a consequence of the ancient Agency-Guild Wars.
- Agency of Agriculture
- Agency of Exploration
- Agency of Immigration
- Agency of Imperial Relations
- Agency of Industrial Innovation
- Agency of Justice
- Agency of Peacekeeping
- Agency of Thay-tra Affairs
- Agency of Trade Subsidies
- Agency of Transportation
- Agency of Welfare
Graytch that have ventured into the wider Imperium follow one of two philosophies. Fundamentalist Graytch remain faithful to the non-violent teachings that dominate their homeworld, and other aspects of traditional culture. Reform Graytch turn away from these ancient lessons, adopting for themselves a new culture based on the Human Imperial model.
Economics[edit]
Historical Graytch corporations of note include the following:
- Des-li-ha Corporation: A notoriously ruthless company that operated at Twele in the early centuries of the Third Imperium.
- Fur-vou-del: A metals corporation that once operated at Twele.
- Han-ko-chi Corporation: One of the largest Graytch corporations, employing millions across the Imperium. It works in construction (making use of Graytch ease in zero-g) and also constructs civilian spacecraft.
- Pas-tu-ran Trading: In the first century of the Third Imperium, this company operated traders close to Liigash.
- See-mel-doo Corporation: Specialist in aquatech, based on 'Twee.
- Tio-ra-car Research: A small but highly regarded bioengineering firm.
- Yu-su-ran Corporation: A large manufacturing firm, well-established and of good reputation on the Graytch homeworld of Liigash. It makes a variety of durable goods, including prefabricated products for housing and machine tools.
Linguistics[edit]
The primary Graytch language is Ga-ray-cha.
Words are of two, three, or four syllables, each separated by a hyphen.
Naming[edit]
A Graytch name usually consists of two parts and three syllables. The first part is a diminutive by which the Graytch was known to its parents, and is often used as a diminutive in later life. The second, a two-syllable part, is chosen by their school for all students who enter in that year. The name is usually from a figure or place in Graytch history or mythology.
Interstellar Relations[edit]
They may become confused in off-world dealings, since Graytch legal codes treat almost all crime as an example of mental illness, and hand out banishment as one of their most substantial punishments.
In the early decades of the Third Imperium, Graytch in Imperial service made use of the CP-859 Staple Gun.
