Languages, both spoken and written, of the Aslan race, known in their own parlance as the Fteirle, are listed here.

For the general study of Languages see Linguistics

Library Data Referral Tree[edit]

Language[edit]

Description (Specifications)[edit]

Spoken, mainstream:

Other Spoken:

  • Haeto: A few ultra-conservative clans preserve this older language (e.g. on Bacci).
  • Herloohkta: The native language of Roakhoi. It is of Aslan origin with considerable modifications and corruptions caused by Human influences and the long isolation of the world.
  • Saktah: An archaic language now almost unknown.
  • Trow: A few small clanholds retain use of this historical language, internally.

Written:

Interlingua[edit]

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Combined Lexicon (mostly Trokh, others)[edit]

A[edit]

  • Aei'eah: "Opportunity". For example, Yoahraei'eah, the Aslan name for Mavuzog Sector, meaning "Yoahr's Opportunity".
  • Aeokhul: An art form; especially musical roars.
  • Aewar: "Leader", e.g. of an ahriy.
  • Ahfa: Personal relics and talismans kept to honour the ancestors.
  • Ahkateikhyair: A general; male commander of a clan's ground forces.
  • Ahkyekhyair: An admiral; male commander of a clan fleet.
  • Ahr'eah: A platoon.
  • Ahriy Tleftuaw'aohkho Firuahko Si'aokhtyeao: "The Pride of Sisters that conquered the Path to the Stars". Literally, "(the) Pride (of) Female Priestesses (that) Sang Domination (over the) Path to the Spirit Heavens".
  • Ahriy: "Pride"; a group of related Aslan families.
  • Ai yourhai: The first precept, the guiding philosophy of the Aslan people. Its name might be translated roughly as 'thoughts shape the way'. The symbol of ai yourhai is the Aslan hand with fighting claw extended.
  • Aikeakha: A sovereign clan controlling multiple mainworlds.
  • Aikhaheh: "Starts by Throwing", a name.
  • Aikoho siylakht: A female director, usually the female head of the clan merchant fleet.
  • Aikoho: "Many ships", usually translated as "fleet".
  • Aisai: An Aslan's dewclaw, a 10-centimetre razor-sharp blade that folds like a jack-knife into a horny sheath in the base of the palm. From ai sai, 'blade claw'.
  • Aisaiaokhe: A duel of honour over beliefs or grievances so deep that the fight must be to the death. Literally, something akin to "blade claw honour".
  • Aisekhokhe entse: "Kinstrife in the stars"; a period in history that peaked with the Aslan Cultural Purge.
  • Aisekhokhe: "Kinstrife". The Aslan have no term for 'civil war' -- the closest equivalent is aisekhokhe, where two families in the same clan fight against each other.
  • Aiyfta: "Thumb width", roughly 1.25" or 3 cm.
  • Akhuaeuhrekhyeh: The Rite of Passage.
  • Akhwohkyal: "Born to the Guns of Battle", a name. It refers to one who was born or reborn on the battlefield.
  • Akyafteirleao: A threat to Aslan culture; heresy or degeneration. Fteirleao ("having the quality of honour") plus Akya- prefix (negation, threat).
  • Alr: The number one. A system in the Trojan Reach Sector is named Alr.
  • Ao (intake of breath): Immortal spirit, generally used as a metaphor instead of a statement of literal belief in such things.
  • Ao ((outflow of breath): "Iron ore".
  • Aohkho: Priest or sage. Note similarity to ao plus ko, making something akin to "Immortal Spirit, Oneself".
  • Aokhaor: Honour, strength of spirit. Ao plus khaor.
  • Aokhol: A moment of clarity and perfect balance, where eaia, action, and universe are in perfect accord; a stepping stone towards khoafteirleao.
  • Aor: "New".
  • Aoreriyya: Literally translated, this means something like "new garden" (or "new veldt"), from aor (new) and eriyya (pleasant lands); a region of Reaver's Deep Sector so called by Aslan because of the relative abundance of habitable, pleasant worlds.
  • Aorlakht: "New lords". In the 1110s, this became a term for ambitious Aslan landowners in the Trans-Rift Colonies.
  • Aoshi: An elusive concept or thought. Also the inner moon of Kusyu.
  • Areiaao: A sprint, a period of approximately 16 seconds.
  • Areiaaofta: "Sprint", the distance an Aslan can run in one areiaao; roughly 150 yards.
  • Atiwaw: "Sky".
  • Aulryuiysai: Literally, "desert"; usually means "vast" or "expansive".
  • Awkhea: Landless, lower-class Aslan; peasants.

E[edit]

  • Eaia: Inner self.
  • Eakh': Literally, "a hunt" or "to hunt".
  • Eakhau: An Aslan day.
  • Eakhaufta: "Day-marches", the distance an Aslan can walk in a Kusyu day, about 45 miles.
  • Eakhyasear: Hunter's rifle.
  • Ear(l): "Wisdom".
  • Earleatrais: Referee or arbiter in a court case, war or duel.
  • Easokhou: "Armoured Hunter". As a name, it implies one who hunted dangerous prey.
  • Eatlo: "Dynasty". Many old clans divide their histories into a series of eatlo, each usually named for the dominant pride of the period.
  • Eaueal: Literally, "river gun". An aquatic predatory animal. Some landowners within the Aslan Hierate view it as traditional to create small streams to mark territory boundaries. Many of these streams host this imported eel analogue.
  • Eikhoi: Dusk.
  • Eiwiytlih: A name, literally "wild twilight", a parallel to the Human slogan "we own the night" -- bravado and power in walking unthreatened, indeed threatening, in darkness.
  • Eiy Iysaoyar: Roughly translated, 'The Inner Eye' or 'The Inner Sight', a psionic society open to female Aslan.
