Ofilaq is an agricultural world.

  • The planet is notable as the homeworld of the Gurvin, a Minor Race.
  • About 80% of the population is composed of Gurvin.
  • About 20% of the population is composed of Hivers.

Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]

Ofilaq orbits a single primary, an F-type star on the main sequence.

The star of Ofilaq radiates significant amounts of UV radiation. To protect themselves from UV damage, Gurvin produce oil from glands in the pits of their arms and intermediary limbs. This oil contains oxybenzone and octinoxate, which absorb UV radiation harmlessly. The oil is spread across the fur through grooming with either the hands or a grooming tool.

Stellar Data[edit]

Ofilaq has a solitary primary star.

System Data[edit]

The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:

Mainworld Data[edit]

Mainworld Size (S)[edit]

Ofilaq is a Big World between 13,600km and 15,200km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 1G and 1.3G. The horizon will appear about 5.4km away. Vessels with only 1G of thrust should avoid landing on this world.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]

Ofilaq has a pressure of 0.43 to 0.70 atmospheres. While the thin atmosphere does not require survival gear this atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds which requires the use of a Filter Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–3 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.

  • Industrial pollution has moderately tainted the planet's atmosphere.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]

Ofilaq has 55-65% of its surface covered by liquid water. It has significant large liquid bodies. Wilderness refueling is possible.

Mainworld Geography & Topography[edit]

Native Lifeforms[edit]

Abundant native life occupying every available ecological niche. Its metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.

Phlootau is a mildly addictive mood-altering herb native to Ofilaq.

Native Sophont (NIL): Gurvin[edit]

The mammalian traders and financeers of the Hive Federation.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Ofilaq is one of the most notable Hive Federation member worlds, being the capital of the Gurvin Interstellar Democratic Republic. Although overshadowed economically (and in terms of population) by several of its early colonies, it is still arguably the heart of Gurvin culture.

World Starport[edit]

Ofilaq has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

World Population (P)[edit]

Ofilaq has a population of 500,000,000 sophonts (hundreds of millions).

  • The majority (around 80%) are native Gurvin.
  • Hivers make up most of the remainder, though many species are found here in small numbers.

World Languages[edit]

  • Gurvin: The common trade language of the Gurvin species (and indeed the entire Hive Federation)
    • Regional Gurvin languages

Urbanization[edit]

Surface architecture is generally utilitarian, with little thought for aesthetics. There are plenty of underground areas, as Gurvin evolved from tunnelling den-living animals. Surface buildings are often grouped very closely together, connected via corridors on several levels. Gurvin do not generally separate residential areas from business areas. Their cities also have an unfortunate reputation for significant pollution problems.

World Technology Level[edit]

Ofilaq possesses a Technology Level of TL–11 or TL-B in Hexadecimal Notation.

World Government[edit]

Ofilaq is governed by a Participatory Democracy where eligible voters determine laws and policy. What determines an eligible voter varies. There may be smaller councils or regional bodies to draft the policies voted upon. Leadership of the government and all members of the bureaucracy are determined by the voting population.

Ofilaq is the heart of the Gurvin Interstellar Democratic Republic. The Republic government has two levels -- the representative committee where legislation and amendments to current legislation are raised, and the board, on which all 46 member worlds, regardless of population, have two directors, selected as they choose to serve terms of 10 years.

World Military[edit]

As a member of the Hive Federation, Ofilaq can call upon Ithklur warriors as well as its own defence forces.

World Law (L)[edit]

Ofilaq has a low law level. There are few laws, covering only important areas. There may be few or no law enforcement officers, the expectation is citizens will bring law breakers to the attention of the Judicial system. Legal proceedings will be fast, with few people involved. For interactions outside of the framework of the laws, cultural norms dominate. Machine guns, other automatic weapons, portable energy weapons, and other military weapons, body pistols, explosives, and poison gas are typically regulated or prohibited.

World Timeline[edit]

  • -4050: An exploratory Hiver vessel arrives in the Ofilaq system and discovers the Gurvin. The Hivers proceed carefully.
  • Circa -3890: The religion Oo Giphlan Dia is founded. Proponents of the new faith believe that a supreme deity, Maslanuud the manipulator, has sent the Hivers to the Gurvin.
  • -3875: The zealot Eenat-Oathisk begins an eight-year conflict on Ofilaq, trying to subjugate the world under Oo Giphlan Dia.
    • The Hiver nest responsible for uplifting Gurvin society is removed from the project and another nest given the responsibility.
  • -3867: The Ofilaq world war ends with a global, Hiver-backed republic in place.
  • -3650: The Hivers judge that the Gurvin have matured sufficiently to be allowed outside their home system. They provide them with the jump-1 drive but limit their exploration to the Aghan Subsector.
    • Gurvin extrasolar colonies are founded on Spakaem (Folgore 0304), Ataof (Folgore 0203) and Otuna (Folgore 0104).
  • -3548: Eager to present a united front to acquire jump-2 drive from the Hivers, the Gurvin form the Gurvin Interstellar Democratic Republic and make an official request to join the nascent Hive Federation and be provided with jump-2. The Hivers declare the Gurvin an "adult" species and agree.
