Gurvin Interstellar Democratic Republic

The Gurvin Interstellar Democratic Republic is a multi-system member of the Hive Federation, located in Folgore Sector. It is the polity of the Gurvin, an influential Federation member race.

The Republic was founded in -3548. The Hivers had been waiting for the unification of separate Gurvin worlds into a single polity and now declared them an 'adult' species no longer requiring close guidance. The Republic was admitted into the Hive Federation and given access to the jump-2 drive.

Description

The Gurvin government is matriarchal, republican, and mercantile. Adult females vote for representatives, who have usually achieved success in business, trade, and finance.

The Republic is divided into several single-member zones, each comprising approximately one million voters. This system ensures that every citizen of the Republic is equally represented in the government regardless of the population of their world. The Republic government has two levels -- the representative committee where legislation and amendments to current legislation are raised, and the board, on which all 46 member worlds, regardless of population, have two directors, selected as they choose to serve terms of 10 years.

Under the articles of the Republic Contract, powers are divided between the central government and the individual member worlds. Republic interference with the initiative of individuals in the pursuit of desired goals is minimal; the mercantile Gurvin are averse to any constraint on economic activity, and as such there is no oversight or legislation regarding minimum wages, duties, or corporate taxes.

Cultural Events

A prestigious dance competition, the Gathat Games, is held once every six years. The best dancers and acrobats from the worlds of the Gurvin Democratic Republic are ranked and randomly paired with each other to compete for the prestigious title of Epara Aia Uaaua -- loosely translated as "The Mover of Desire".
