Mainserai is not actually a world, but a jump bridge constructed to be the capital of the Federation of the Fused Mains. As of 1105, the station is missing, with all aboard presumed dead.

Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]

As with any jump bridge, there is no primary star or mainworld.

Mainserai started out as a rogue planetoid with surface gravity approximately 0.01 G. Over time, it has been extensively built out, both within and beyond the surface. Artificial gravity is the norm, though some major sections use spin gravity. The entire complex has a light outer shell of slag material, hosting power plants and stationkeeping maneuver drives (some of which date all the way back to 420, used to move the fuel cache set up to help survey the area to the planetoid that would become Mainserai), but acting mainly to limit access to designated ports.

It is theoretically possible to activate these drives to move Mainserai away from the calibration point in case of attack or if some other location would be more economic (if ore and ice returns from the drone network strongly favored one side, for instance). Given the extensive security interlocks on the system, to do so without need would require some mass psychosis - a massive psionic Wave of Craziness, for instance. That appeared to be exactly what happened in 1052, as Mainserai was not where it used to be, leaving no immediate traces. (A year long buffer was allowed to make sure the Empress Wave had sufficiently cleared the area before anyone jumped back in. Quite a few jump-1 ships wound up temporarily stranded, though a jump tanker was summoned and arrived within a month, the ship crews surviving on the supplies they brought intending to throw a party for the survivors with.)

Given the general devastation the Empress Wave inflicted, from 1052 to 1109 the Federation of the Fused Mains was only able to spare more than token survey crews to attempt to find Mainserai, none of which succeeded. A private effort finally located the station, reporting the coordinates in exchange for an undisclosed but presumably large bounty.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Mainserai was originally constructed as the fourth of the Pirian Domain Fuel Factories, by payment of commission to the Pirian Domain as a conciliatory measure. Since it was not Domain property from the beginning, and thus never had a "Fuel Factory (Digit)" name, there is debate as to whether it was "officially", "technically", or whatever-other-qualifier one of the Fuel Factories. The first of Mainserai's drones came from PD FuelFac 0, and each generation of design updates from the Pirian Domain Fuel Factories was applied at Mainserai too.

The following information refers to the last known data prior to the Empress Wave (and, where applicable, after rediscovery).

World Starport (Sp)[edit]

Mainserai has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

World Population (P)[edit]

As of 1105, it is believed that all aboard are dead. There was a wide-spread belief that the Empress Wave probably only interacted with planetary populations, and would thus ignore Mainserai. This proved tragically false.

Prior to the Empress Wave, total population was estimated between 40,000,000 and 50,000,000.

Immediately after rediscovery, from 1109-1137, the all-crew population remains under 1,000.

World Government (G)[edit]

Mainserai is governed by a Civil Service Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government is another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy leadership influences policy. The government leadership may select the bureaucracy leadership, but not its membership. Usually the governmental leadership is divided, or incapable of setting policy and the bureaucracy provides a stabilizing influence. The bureaucracy may be the full government bureaucracy or a section with limited jurisdiction but considerable influence like the military.

World Law Level (L)[edit]

Law is fairly low. Personal concealable weapons were (famously) allowed, but nothing beyond that aboard the station. IISS estimates thus place the law level at 4.

World Technology Level (TL)[edit]

Mainserai possesses a Technology Level of TL–13 or TL-D in Hexadecimal Notation.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Holovideo recorders.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Miniature super-batteries, prototype collectors, advanced fusion plants.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:

World Infrastructure[edit]

An extensive array of drones prospect nearby concentrations of mass for light months in each direction, mining any promising results (ice or ore) and bringing the useful materials back to the station, where they are declared property of the station's government. While there is some cost to maintain the drone network, it is low enough to be seen as essentially free. Traditionally, young traders are allowed to practice their haggling skills by purchasing the ore for a low fee, thus assigning it an initial value. While there is no age limit, no trader is allowed to do this more than once in a lifetime (with maximum ore tonnage based on availability). This is often seen as a coming of age rite, more so for traders raised on the station but also for some in nearby systems.

Station Timeline[edit]

  • 420: System selected for construction of a jump bridge to fuse the two bordering jump-1 mains into a single main. System is extensively surveyed, with a deep space fuel cache established to assist operations.
  • 421: Construction begun. deep space fuel cache relocated to selected planetoid. Mainserai opened for public use by end of year.
  • 421-1052: Construction, in some form or another (mainly to handle expansion), is ongoing during every year of the station's initial life.
  • 1052: Empress Wave passes through. Mainserai goes missing.
  • 1109: A group of travellers finally rediscovers Mainserai. Ice and ore delivery has continued uninterrupted. A small Federation crew subsequently comes aboard to handle fuel processing, resume administrative duties, and process the deceased. (Funeral rites are the easiest portion of this. Sorting out the interlocking tangle of estates takes much more work.)
  • 1137: Portions of Mainserai finally reopened to general habitation, though large sections still need cleanup and repair.
