Mainworld Size (S)[edit]

Eldritch is a Meso World between 12,000km and 13,500km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.8G and 1.1G. The horizon will appear about 5.1km away. Vessels with 1G of thrust should check with local starport authorities before attempting to land using emergency power.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]

Eldritch has a pressure of 0.43 to 0.70 atmospheres. While the thin atmosphere does not require survival gear this atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds which requires the use of a Filter Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–3 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]

Eldritch has 75-85% of its surface covered by liquid water with a few large continents and extensive islands. Wilderness refueling is possible.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Eldritch is a Solomani prison planet for political undesirables, and is managed by the Ministry of Justice from a high-security orbital facility. All prisoners are sterilized and tagged with transmitters before being allowed down to the surface where they live in agricultural prison-farm communes. Security is moderate on the planet itself but very heavy at the Starport.

Some prisoners have chosen to escape into the wild, but only expert survivalists can survive for long in the exotic alien environment. An edible native fungi, if eaten raw, induce a gradual but severe deterioration of the language and reasoning centers of the brain -- this may have given rise to stories of cannibalistic 'Human Apes' living in the wild.

World Starport (Sp)[edit]

Eldritch has a Class D Starport, a poor quality installation which has few of the expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World Population (P)[edit]

Eldritch has a population of 9,000,000 sophonts (millions).

  • This is a Nonindustrial World, too small to support the complete chain of production of most goods from start to finish.

World Demographics[edit]

Eldritch is a diverse mixture of races and cultures due to it being the dumping group of political dissidents from across the entire Confederation. The majority of prisoners are Vilani agitators from the border subsectors, but significant populations of Selenite and Solomani have been sentenced to live on the planet as well. Non-Humaniti are present, but not in significant figures.

World Government[edit]

Eldritch has a Captive Government or Colony. The world is ruled by an external government, there is no self-rule. This is a colony or conquered area. The local government is an oligarchy appointed by, and answerable only to, the external government.

World Military[edit]

The Solomani Ministry of Justice maintains a militarized police force on the high-security orbital station above the plant. This force acts as both the prison planet's security but also as its Home Guard.

Prison gangs on the planet manage to maintain what can effectively be considered militias armed with smuggled weapons.

World Law Level (L)[edit]

Eldritch has a moderate level with laws covering many areas of government and interaction. These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials will be present, but not in great numbers. Personal concealable firearms, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.

World Technology Level (TL)[edit]

Eldritch possesses a Technology Level of TL–6.

World Economy[edit]

Eldritch is home to hundreds of prison-farm communes that grow the local indigo-colored plants as cash crops. These crops are sold as valuable pharmaceutical ingredients to those who contract with the Ministry of Justice for cheap labor.

World Culture[edit]

The culture of Eldritch is as diverse as the worlds its prisoners are from. The only unifying element amongst the prisoners is an anti-Confederation attitude. The dividing factors of race and politics are a stronger force, leading to rival gang violence across the planet.

Historical Data[edit]

Eldritch was chosen as a prison planet for political prisoners during the Solomani Rim War to prevent Imperial loyalists and pacifists from disrupting the war effort. It continues to serve in that capacity but has expanded to include dissidents that support successionist movements such as that of Brookwall or the Commonwealth of Gadjick.

World Timeline[edit]

  • 937: Eldritch founded as prison planet
  • 1104: Political prisoners from Brookwall begin to be sent to Eldritch. Being largely Selenite -- adapted to low gravity -- they rarely last long here.
