The Xabulamanti of Xabula (Neworld 0520) are an aquatic Minor Non-Human Race with a Non-humanoid appearance.

  • While apparently technologically competent, they exist without the use of technological items.

Description (Specifications)

The Xabulamanti are a poorly understood aquatic species native to the shallow coastal regions of Xabalu, their tropical homeworld.

Physiology

The Xabulamanti take the form of gelatinous, malleable spheres that swarm together. They can move themselves relatively rapidly through the water, when needed, by pulling in fluid and expelling it behind them, while making fine movements is achieved by beating tiny cilia that cover their surfaces. The main body of spheres is connected by a mass of almost invisible filaments, but smaller spheres, while still integral to the organism, can seemingly operate and act independently. Spheres that are separated from the main mass for prolonged periods die. Larger spheres can "bud" off smaller spheres to replace any that are lost.

How the spheres function together to form an individual being remains unclear.

The Xabulamanti are known to be omnivorous, consuming both aquatic plants and small creatures. Some spheres appear to specialize in acquiring and digesting food, which is passed to other spheres in the form of discrete packets of fluids and in turn ingested.

Their senses are not at all understood. They are sensitive to acoustics and can produce a variety of sounds by expelling water or causing clicks or pops. They are also sensitive to light and appear to have the ability to visualize things, but routinely avoid bright light.

Manipulation of objects is achieved by smaller spheres, either individually or working together, surrounding an object and "working" it. Spheres can adjust their shape and can lift, move, or squeeze objects with surprising force. There are reports of groups of small Xabulamanti spheres working together to successfully use human weapons such as spearguns, though reloading such weapons seems to be beyond their capabilities.

Some reports have indicated that Xabulamanti are able to generate a powerful electrical discharge, though this remains unconfirmed.

Physiology

Very little is known of Xabulamanti brain processes, psychology, or thinking.

Individuals are mostly solitary – it is rare to see groups of Xabulamanti. They are generally regarded as shy or cautious and avoid direct contact with dolphins or humans.

They do not appear to be willing to engage in physical confrontations.

History & Background (Dossier)

The aquatic Xabulamanti swarms are perhaps too alien to adjust to the concept of Solomani society. Under pressure from uplifted dolphin colonists, they continue to decline.

The dolphins and the few humans that inhabit their homeworld have a local technological level of TL–7. The Xabulamanti appear to have a level of advancement equivalent to TL–0, though they seem to fully understand the concept of technology and on occasion have manipulated technological devices. The dolphin settlements are engaged in large-scale aquaculture, while humans operate the starport facilities. The prime fisheries that the dolphins exploit happen to overlap Xabulamanti feeding grounds.

The Xabulamanti language has never been fully deciphered, though a number of individual words and some basic terms are broadly understood.
