Starships are designed with the Classic Traveller format, using High Guard Shipyard v1.13 written by Andrea Vallance.

The Giant class Tanker is a very large Auxiliary starship.

Description (Specifications)

The Giant class Tanker was originally designed for service with the Fleets of the Domain of Sylea. The design process was strongly influenced by the former Duke of Oreo Subsector, in Massilia Sector, a keen amateur naval architect. It is the primary Tanker of the 146th Fleet, which the Duke considered to be his own personal force. The ship is capable of Jump-4 in order to keep pace with the formation's capital elements. The ship has fuel scoops and a large purification plant. Its streamlined configuration allows oceanic refueling and its excellent acceleration allows for safe gas giant skimming. It carries a minimal suite of weapons.

Basic Ship Characteristics

Following the Imperial Navy and IISS Universal Ship Profile and data, additional information is presented in the format shown here. The small craft factor indicates the number of squadrons (of ten craft) carried on the ship. Tonnage on the universal ship profile is shown in kilotons (thousands of tons) where necessary. [1]

Basic Ship Characteristics [2]
No. Category Remarks
1. Tonnage The Giant class is constructed using a 600,000 Ton hull built in a generally Needle-shaped configuration. The hull is fully streamlined, giving fair atmospheric performance that is further enhanced by its onboard gravitic systems.
  • There are 80 airlocks located around the vessel. The cargo hold is accessed by large doors and has a loading ramp.
  • The vessel has hardened and contoured ventral surfaces, allowing surface landings.
2. Crew x3,807 personnel.
  • x381 Officers.
  • x3,426 Enlisted, including 600 Security Personnel.

Accommodations

  • There are 1,903.5 Staterooms. All quarters are double occupancy.

Accessible areas of the hull are fitted with grav plates and inertial compensators and have full life support and environmental systems.

  • There are internal monitoring and security systems throughout the vessel. Individual sections of the hull can be sealed off.
  • There are multiple emergency lockers.
3. Performance The vessel mounts a Jump-4 drive, a Maneuver-6 drive, and a Power Plant-6, giving performance of Jump-4 and 6-G acceleration. The ship has an agility rating of 4 and an emergency agility of 6. The internal fuel tankage is sufficient for one Jump-4 and gives the power plant 4 weeks duration.
  • The engineering section has a main control room.
    • Ladders, gantries and platforms give access to the machinery.
  • The jump drive utilizes a lanthanum hull grid.
  • The jump drive is fitted with a jump governor.
4. Electronics Adjacent to the bridge is a Model/9fib computer: no backup computer is installed.
  • There are multiple workstations and control points throughout the vessel.
  • The vessel is fitted with communications equipment, a standard sensor array, and has an avionics suite.
    • It is fitted with backup commo and sensor systems.
  • It has a transponder unit that can be deactivated on command.
5. Hardpoints x6,000 hardpoints.
  • The listed battery groupings are standard configurations for the class. Alternative battery groupings may be designated for specific missions.
  • There are 5,930 unused hardpoints and but no tonnage is set aside for fire control.
6. Armament The normal weapons fit-out for a Giant class is:
7. Defenses The hull is unarmored.
8. Craft Flight Section

The subcraft are housed in a dedicated hanger: the hanger can be sealed and has a total volume of 169 Tons.

9. Fuel Treatment The vessel has internal fuel tankage of 405,500 Tons.
  • The hull is fitted with fuel scoops.
  • The vessel is equipped with a very large fuel purification plant that can refine all onboard fuel in a few hours: the plant is operated and maintained by the engineering crew.

Refuelling Tankage

  • 129,500.0 Tons of the internal tankage is set aside for refueling operations.
10. Cost The basic cost of the vessel is MCr356,132.168
  • Architects Fee: MCr3,561.322
11. Construction Time 234 weeks (54 months) as standard.
  • Build times can be reduced by mass production and the efficiencies such processes generate, by increased financing, and by allotting additional yard resources and facilities to the construction contract.
12. Comments Standard cargo capacity amounts to 148 Tons.
  • The cargo hold can be sealed and has independent life support and environmental systems.
  • Sections of the hold may be isolated if desired and can be provided with specialized environmental conditions, typically refrigeration.

History & Background (Dossier)

The Giant class Tanker sees service in Fleets across the Domain of Sylea and beyond. The class carries two 20-Ton Gigs for crew transport and weather reconnaissance.

The Giant class was designed to be produced in shipyards across the Domain of Sylea and bore no particular cultural or political influences within its architecture. However, the former Duke of Oreo Subsector, a direct descendant of the aristocratic Halls families and an enthusiastic student of naval architecture, exercised his remit as mandated under the terms of the "Oreo Settlement" and demanded that any vessels that were to serve with his "personal Fleet" must be locally designed and manufactured. The impracticality of this demand eventually resulted in a compromise – all vessels of the Giant class, no matter where they served, were to carry an Alfred class Gunboat, the personal design of the Duke. The current Duke, his son, has maintained the policy.

During fleet operations Giants may perform a "running skim": the huge tanker maintains a constant skimming run within the atmosphere of a gas giant world with its fuel purification plant running at maximum capacity: the Jump Section of the engineering crew are tasked with operating the machinery and running the various operations. Other vessels match its course and perform a vessel-to-vessel transfer of refined fuel. The vessel's gigs will run ahead of the tanker during these operations to give advanced warning of possible hazards such as turbulence. Such maneuvers are dangerous and unpopular with crews, but can dramatically decrease refueling times.

Osiris Max Incident

A famous incident involving a member of the Giant class occurred during the confused opening stages of the Rebellion. The Admiral commanding a Task Force ordered a ship of the class, the INS Osiris Max, to make a refueling run from the hydrosphere of a large terrestrial planet. As the behemoth surged upward through the atmosphere laden with fuel – and busily refining – it was spotted by enemy deep recon probes.

During later analysis of the probe's data the sensor readings were misinterpreted as a new class of streamlined Dreadnought: the massive electrostatic discharges and the vessels EM masking and IFF transponder helped to confuse the issue. The strength of enemy capital ships within Oreo Subsector was subsequently reported as having dramatically increased. The incident and the faulty intelligence it generated caused major changes in fleet dispositions and may have directly affected the course of the conflict throughout the region.
