The Spinward Marches Sector is the Imperium's farthest frontier sector, containing 437 star systems divided along a coreward/rimward line by the Imperial border. The region is dominated by two major powers: the Imperial Spinward Marches sector and the frontier provinces of the Zhodani Consulate. In the independent territory between the two powers lie four small territories: the Federation of Arden, the Sword Worlds Confederation, and the Darrian Confederation. Each follows its own diplomatic line designed to maintain independence from both the Zhodani and the Imperium. [1]

The Spinward Marches has been settled since the 400s and is still a frontier sector. High-tech worlds are scattered among empty, fallow worlds; there is potential for exploration, exploitation, and development for centuries to come.[1]

The Spinward Marches sector has 439 worlds with an estimated combined population of 374 billion. The population consists primarily of 30 sophont groups including 27 native sophonts. The governments in the Spinward Marches maintain 87 Naval bases, 66 Scout bases, 41 Military bases, and six Way stations. The average technology level is 8 (with most between 5 and 11). The highest technology level is 16 at Darrian (Spinward Marches 0627). The Spinward Marches sector contains 621 stars and 4,482 identified planets; 260 monostellar systems, 176 binary systems, and three trinary systems. 297 of the 439 systems (67%) have native gas giants. [2]

History[edit]

The Spinward Marches remained relatively unexplored and unsettled until the Imperium expanded into it between 75 and 400. But some settlements were established before then. The Darrians were contacted in -1511 by Terran traders and began to expand to the stars. [3]

In -399, Gram (1223) was the first of the Sword Worlds to be colonized; other Sword Worlds were colonized in the centuries that followed. [3]

True development of the Spinward Marches began with the arrival of the Imperials. In 60, Mora was settled; Regina was settled in 75. Between 200 and 400, the major Imperial exploration and settlement of the Marches took place. By 500, there were Imperial explorations beyond the Marches and into Zhodani territory in the adjacent Foreven sector. [3]
