Hollis-Belethan System

The primary is Hollis, a hot white main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 60.4 Sols, a mass of 2.76 Sols, and a diameter of 3.67 million km. The inner system consists of (III) a sparse stony planetoid belt, (IV) a vacuum inner world, (V) a corrosive atmosphere inferno world, (VI) a thin atmosphere bigworld, and (VII) a thin atmosphere inner world – orbital positions (I) and (II) are empty. (VIII) Belethan orbits within the habitable zone and is designated the mainworld. (IX) an exotic atmosphere bigworld, (X) a vacuum worldlet, and (XI) a vacuum iceworld form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

(VIII) Belethan is designated the mainworld and orbits Hollis at a mean distance of 10.8 AU (1.62 billion km), within the habitable zone. It has an orbital period of 21 years 133 days and a rotation period of 29 hours. The axial tilt is 16 degrees. Belethan has a diameter of 7,776 km, a density of 5.28 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.58 G. The world is geologically active. Its atmosphere is rated as Dense, Tainted, with a mean surface pressure of 1.95 bar and a composition of 77% nitrogen, 22% oxygen, and 1% argon, carbon dioxide, neon and other trace gases. The taint is caused by the extremely low atmospheric humidity and large quantities of fine wind-borne dust. Less than 0.1% of the surface is covered in lakes of liquid water. Mean surface temperature: 54°C. The atmosphere is dynamic and violent weather systems, driven by the star, sweep across the globe. The climate is seasonal.

Belethan has widespread native life, entirely consisting of extremophile microorganisms that can survive in a wide variety of environments. Their metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.

History & Background (Dossier)

A rare local custom involves law enforcement. Crimes which occur within each discrete territories are adjudicated according to each region's distinct penal justice codes. Most penalties involve fines and sentences for various duration prison stays. Execution and life sentences are incredibly rare. However, criminals who cross boundaries between autonomous, self-governing sovereignties are held in a shared captivity center. This center is located at the southern polar region. If the charges are agreed to be of a minor nature, then the tribunal council will release them on an annual amnesty day for time served. This can lead to short sentences depending on when they are apprehended. This has been linked to a cyclical pattern in the frequency of these types of criminal activities. Capital crimes mean that the accused are released into a maze-like underground complex which is filled with lethal traps, dangerous organisms, and fellow prisoners who compete for very limited resources. Their progress is recorded and transmitted as a popular form of media entertainment. An off-world media consortium has been contracted and uses higher technology equipment that has been imported to manage the audio-visual production. These recordings have limited distribution to other world media markets as a bizarre form of entertainment. If any prisoners escape to the surface they are cleared of all charges and free to go. To date there are a handful of survivors, strangely no one has survived a return trip to the criminal retribution center.

Belethan has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which features amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
