The Tshini of Zephor are a minor race with a generally non-humanoid appearance.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

Tshini are large, standing some 2.5 meters tall and weighing around 300 kgs. They have a generally crouched posture, but when they stand upright and extend their necks they can reach a height of up to 4 meters. Some Terran observers have compared them to the Earth Pangolin.

Physical Profile[edit]

Genetic Profile: SDVIES

Body Shape: Bilateral HBS-T-AN-LN-T

  • Bony internal skeleton
  • Hemolytes as internal fluids
  • Scaly hide
  • Large claw-like hands

Despite the size of their hands they are capable of delicately manipulating small objects.

Tshini have the characteristic Vigor rather than Endurance. They are determined and focused and their movements are slow and measured, though they are capable of bursts of strength or speed when necessary: they rapidly become fatigued after such activity. Tshini cannot swim, but since they can hold their breath for up to half an hour, they are known to cross water by walking along the bottom.

They are oxygen breathers and have deep, rasping voices.

Tshini are primarily nocturnal and have eyes that are adapted to see in the dark. They prefer to rest in a shady spot during daylight hours.

The race have long lives (Tshini typically live for around 150 standard years) though they spend around half that time resting and digesting, in a state of deep torpor. Over their lifetimes they can expect to produce only one or two offspring.

Diet and Trophics[edit]

Tshini are classified as herbivore intermittents. Their primary foodstuffs are roots and fruit, which they are able to dig out of the ground with their large clawed fingers or reach up into tall flora and pick. They also eat foliage of all kinds, and will regularly consume insects and even small animals. They feed occasionally, usually consuming a single vast meal then taking around a standard week to digest it.

Human plumbing and sanitation systems struggle to cope with the Tshini.

Psychology[edit]

Tshini exhibit recognized characteristics of intelligence:

  • Conceptual thought, including abstract language.
  • Social structure, including social organization.
  • Tool use, allowing environmental manipulation.

Tshini psychology is driven by factors common to many sophonts:

  • Acquisition (stemming from the need to gather adequate nutrition),
  • Preservation (derived from the need to continue their personal existence), and
  • Perpetuation (the urge to continue the species).

A Tshini that misses their regularly weekly feed becomes noticeably more irritable and aggressive.

Tshini are extremely protective towards their offspring and immediate families.

Native Culture[edit]

  • Homogeneity: 1 (monolithic)
  • Acceptance: 1 (extremely xenophobic)
  • Strangeness: 2 (typical)
  • Symbols: 2 (very concrete)

The Tshini are native to Zephor, in Corelian Subsector of Theta Borealis Sector.

After the devastation of their homeworld and the extinction of the Zephora, the majority of the surviving Tshini moved to a planet they call Tshi, a secondary world in the Bytholm system in Evalren Subsector.

  • Only around 7000 individuals still inhabit the homeworld.
  • Around 40,000 Tshini are resident on Tshi.

The Kingdom of Peladon was instrumental in facilitating the move to Tshi, providing starships to transport the Tshini, large amounts of supplies, and experts who were able to assist with their resettlement.
