Sufren is a high-population, pre-rich garden world with a billion or more sophonts in population size, and a near-ideal utopian environment conducive to most sophonts, but still lacks adequate population to expand its economy to a rich status.

• Its economy and population are rapidly growing and living conditions are expected to quickly rise barring outside forces.
• This world contains an archaeological site with suspected high-tech remnants of the now-vanished Ancients precursor race.
• The world serves as the subsector capital with the significant extra trade and prestige associated with that role.
• This is a "high technology" world with technology achievements at, near, or above the standard for Charted Space.
• This is a temperate world, with a climate of pleasant, average temperatures, considered to be an ideal or near-ideal environment by many different sophont species.

Mainworld Size (S)

Sufren is a Meso World between 8,800km and 10,400km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.6G and 0.8G. The horizon will appear about 4.4km away.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)

Sufren has a pressure of 1.50 to 2.49 atmospheres. A Dense Atmosphere requires no survival gear although it may be hard on sophonts not accustomed to it.

A native lifeform known locally as Marsdust had a significant impact on the atmosphere. Marsdust is a photosynthetic, oxygen-producing organism, which pervades the stratosphere and mesosphere. It not only boosts oxygen pressure by almost 25% but changes the quality of light that penetrates to Sufren's surface, removing much of the red wavelength and reflecting a significant percentage of orange.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)

Sufren has 55-65% of its surface covered by liquid water. It has significant large liquid bodies. Wilderness refueling is possible.

There are five major continents, one minor continent, several archipelagos and numerous isolated small islands.

Native Lifeforms

There is extensive native life.

Animal life is typically bilaterally symmetrical and consists of two sexes. Exceptions occur, with the most common being radial symmetry and creatures that reproduce asexually. The base compounds of life and the manner in which they have manifested are almost identical to life on Terra; the two biospheres are highly compatible.

• Black Reptishark: One of a large group of "reptisharks" native to Sufren. An apex predator, large enough to easily prey on Dolphins as well as prove a credible threat to a lone Orca.
• Marsdust: See Atmosphere, above.
• Snagglepuss: Terrestrial predators. The crested snagglepuss is a domesticated variant.
• Striped sea dragons: The largest species of sea dragon on Sufren, up to 34 metres and 220 tons. Due to its size, an adult striped sea dragon has almost no natural predators, although Orca have been known to hunt them on occasion.
• Whitelady: A sheet-like colony of specialised polyps working together. No threat to adult Humans unless handled.

Point of Interest: Dolphins & Orca

Sufren is home to a large population (over two million) of Orcinus orca sapiens, intelligent orcas produced by an offshoot of the same Terran program that resulted in the more well-known intelligent dolphins. These huge creatures were relocated to Sufren after funding was terminated for the program on Terra. They share Sufren's seas with a population of Tursiops truncatus galactus.

History & Background

Sufren is the subsector capital, a major industrial hub, a garden world, and considered by many to be the jewel of the sector. Sufren features a fairly well-preserved Ancients site.

There is an associated Imperial Naval Base, hosting elements of the 198th Fleet, located in orbit around the system's innermost gas giant (Rachlum).

Imperial High & Landed Nobility

Sufren, as a member world of the Third Imperium, holds the estate of an Imperial Landed Knight who acts as an Imperial representative to the world, and the estate and fiefdoms of three members of the Imperial Landed Nobility, who oversee affairs regarding the world at an Interstellar and Imperial level.

• It holds the estate of an Imperial knight, the Imperial representative to the world.
• It holds the estate of an Imperial baronet.
• It holds the fiefdom of an Imperial count.
• It holds the fiefdom of an Imperial subsector duke, who also conducts affairs regarding the entire subsector at the Interstellar and Imperial level.

World Starport (Sp)

Sufren has a Class B Starport, a good quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and most kinds of repair, and construction of non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

• The highport is in a geosynchronous orbit above the equator. It is constructed as a pair of thick rings stacked atop each other, each with a diameter of four kilometres, a height of two kilometres, and a thickness of two kilometres. A central pylon with a length of six kilometres and a diameter of one kilometre runs through the centre, connecting to each ring by four thick struts.
• The downport is located on an island directly below the highport. It features construction yards capable of producing spacecraft up to 1,000 tons. It sees almost as many ships as the highport, although most traffic is either heading to the highport itself or somewhere else in-system. The island, named Nova Scotia, acts as a surrogate planetary capital -- an independent polity apart from the three main governments and overseen by an executive council nominated by the System Congress.

Sufren has a population of 6,000,000,000 sophonts (billions).

Urbanization

The vast majority of the population live within large cities; these are surrounded by small rural settlements. The population has access to advanced fusion power generation and each building has its own generator. Even the poorest among Sufren's citizens live comfortably. Buildings are constructed tall, to minimise disruption to the environment.

World Government (G)

Sufren has a Balkanized Government. There is no central world government. The world has several governments competing for control of the world. These may be allies, cooperating, competitors, or at war with each other.

World Law Level (L)

Sufren has a low law level. There are few laws, covering only important areas. There may be few or no law enforcement officers, the expectation is citizens will bring law breakers to the attention of the Judicial system. Legal proceedings will be fast, with few people involved. For interactions outside of the framework of the laws, cultural norms dominate. Machine guns, other automatic weapons, portable energy weapons, and other military weapons, body pistols, explosives, and poison gas are typically regulated or prohibited.

World Technology Level (TL)

Sufren possesses a Technology Level of TL–12 or TL-C in Hexadecimal Notation.

• Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Holovision, Personal Global Communications, and advanced Translators.
• Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Increasingly advanced fusion plants and advanced fuel cells.
• Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:

History-Era: Rebellion

Sufren's extensive government naval yard continued to produce the planet's own military starships; only commercial hulls were produced offworld. In the 1120s, it was considered likely that this might not be the case much longer; local businesses were working to upgrade the commercial starport to an A-class facility.

Since the Umorphutwyo (Diaspora 1816) incidents of the mid-1120s, access to the Ancients site had become difficult; Visitors had to submit to background checks and personal interviews. The reason for these added precautions wasn't known, but rumors suggested that the Intelligence Division of Sufren's Planetary Navy had begun classified research at the site.
