The posting of Fleet Admiral (O8)* comprises the next lower three most senior commissioned officer ranks in the Imperial Navy below Sector Admiral and Grand Admiral.

* - Some Rank Scales grade the ranks of Fleet Admiral as Ranks O8-O10

Description (Specifications)[edit]

The position of Fleet Admiral is itself actually an appointment rather than a substantive rank, but as an operational command it is nevertheless typically granted to one of three substantive ranks based on the size of the formation. [1]

  • Admiral (O8c / O10). A full Admiral normally commands a proper numbered fleet or the equivalent in size. The position of Subsector Admiral is a Fleet Admiral posting typically granted to an officer holding this rank.
  • Vice-Admiral (O8b / O9). A Vice-Admiral normally commands a Battle Fleet or other Large Task Force formed for an operation out of various fleet sub-groups. Some Subsector Admiral postings are granted to Vice-Admirals.
  • Rear Admiral (O8a / O8). A Rear Admiral normally commands a Task Force formed from several Task Groups as part of a larger Task Force or Fleet. Some Reserve Fleet Subsector Admiral postings are granted to Rear Admirals. Rear Admirals also often serve on Admiralty Staffs of more senior Admirals.

Each numbered fleet in the Imperium will be commanded by at least a Fleet Admiral of the rank of full Admiral, although this may occasionally be a temporary rank for an officer of lesser substantive rank standing in while a new senior officer arrives, being "tried in office" and/or awaiting confirmation of promotion.

Permanent appointment to the rank of Rear Admiral or greater attracts the title of Knight or Baronet [2][3]. i.e. Should there not be any appropriate Noble candidate, the non-Noble will be granted a knighthood as part of the promotion process.

Each sector will have a senior officer from each Imperial Navy Branch as local head of that branch and advising on the technical requirements of that branch to the Sector Admiral. These officers will hold one of the ranks noted above that is typically associated with the position of Fleet Admiral, but are known as Staff Admirals and hold the title Flag Officer [ Sector ] ([ Branch ]) e.g. Flag Officer Deneb (Gunnery).[4]

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

This rank is simply a term referring to an "Admiral that commands a Fleet". It should not be confused with an ancient historical rank of "Admriral-of-the-Fleet" (sometimes also referred to as "Fleet Admiral") that denoted the senior-most Admiralty rank in a naval organization. The equivalent senior rank in the Imperial rank structure is denoted by "Grand Admiral".
