The rank of Vice Admiral (O8 / O8b)* is one of the senior commissioned flag-officer ranks in the Imperial Navy.
- * - Some Rank Scales grade the ranks of Fleet Admiral as ranks O8-O10, in which case a Vice-Admiral rates a rank of O9
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Historically, the rank was the second in command of a fleet and the leader of the vanguard elements of the fleet in the line of battle.
A Battle Fleet or Large Task Force or a detachment of multiple Task Groups or squadrons from one or more numbered fleets in the Imperium will be normally be commanded by a Vice Admiral. A Vice-Admiral may sometimes be given charge of one of the Numbered Fleets in a sector.
Permanent appointment to this rank attracts the title of Baronet [1][2]; i.e. Should there not be any appropriate Noble candidate, the non-Noble will be granted a knighthood and/or Baronetcy as part of the promotion process.
