The Iper'Mar of Lamberd (Fornast 0540) are an Imperial nomadic culture, consisting of Human sophonts.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

The Iper'Mar can be found on numerous low-tech worlds in Fornast, Ley, the Imperial Empty Quarter, and (more recently) the Spinward Marches. They are found running starports, life support, power, and communication systems on low-tech worlds; maintaining high-tech, high-profit schools on backwater worlds; advising low-tech elites on interstellar society and technology; and providing mid- and high-tech medical care to those individuals who can pay for it. Providing workable high-tech solutions to low-tech systems, the Iper'Mar are recognized as one of the binding forces of Coreward-Trailing Imperial interstellar society.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

The name Iper'Mar is originally derived from the term "Imperial Matrices", a term for the once-dominant merchant families of Lamberd system. Over time, the meaning has shifted to something like "refugees" or "exiles".

They are also known as "tech tyrants" in Ley Sector, due to their domineering attitude towards low-tech cultures. This term is gaining currency in the Quarter as well.

Cultural Sophontology[edit]

As a culture, they are mildly patriarchal -- high politics is reserved for elder males, though both men and women are found in most other professions. Attitude towards non-Humans can be harsh, but superficially polite and respectful for the sake of business and Imperial unity -- especially regarding Bwaps.

According to the Old Law, each group of 10,000 Iper'Mar (usually divided between two to ten tribes) may choose one of their number to be their Ruling Elder.

The Iper'Mar Nation is currently divided into four Clans, each containing many tribes.

  • Hint: Located primarily in Fornast Sector; the oldest, wealthiest, and most powerful clan. The Hint retain a small fleet of large, long-haul trading ships that are expanding their presence into neighboring Core and Delphi sectors. Many Hint Iper'Mar have entered the Imperial Civil Service as well. A few have entered the social strata of minor Core nobility, and can afford to live the true nomad lifestyle, with several families living on starships.
  • Rimward Belk: Found within Ley Sector, with a few isolated tribes and families in Gateway and the Glimmerdrift Reaches. Total membership is about 750,000. Noticeably poorer than the Hint Clan, they focus almost exclusively on providing support services for low-tech communities. While respected for their expertise, they are also resented for the superior salaries their skills and tools command.
  • Coreward Belk: Residing primarily in the Empty Quarter Sector, with several tribes in Antares and Lishun. Roughly 700,000 Iper'Mar are members of the Coreward Belk. The poorest of the Iper'Mar, the Coreward Belk focus on several tech-dependent ventures. Most of their medical ventures have prospered nicely, from the clinics and hospitals on Charity to hospital ships that make the rounds throughout the Six Subsectors.
  • Far Deneb: A Clan that has moved to the Spinward Marches Sector, consisting of about 150,000, people. They first arrived in the Marches around 820, and rapidly gained prominence within the hostile-environment branch of the construction industry as low-cost producers.

Shared meals are a crucial aspect of business and financial dealings with the Iper'Mar. Major deals require at least a week of familiar interaction.
