Free Trader (type A): Using a 200-ton hull, the free trader is an elementary interstellar merchant ship plying the space lanes carrying cargo and passengers. [1] The Type A Free Trader is a 200-ton cargo vessel equipped to handle both freight and passengers. [2] The Type A class Free Trader is one of the most common types of starships found within Charted Space. Many variant types and classes exist of this vessel.
Description[edit]
It has jump drive-A, maneuver drive-A, and power plant-A, giving performance of jump-1 and 1-G acceleration. There is fuel tankage for 30 tons, sufficient for the power plant and one jump-1. Adjacent to the bridge is a computer Model/1. There are ten staterooms and twenty low berths. [3]
No turrets or weaponry are installed, but there are two hardpoints and two tons are set aside for fire control. There are no ship's vehicles. Cargo capacity is 82 tons. The hull is streamlined. The free trader requires a crew of four: pilot, engineer, medic, and steward. Gunners may be carried if the ship is armed. The ship costs MCr37.08 and typically takes eleven months to build. [4]

History & Background[edit]
The Type A becomes the cornerstone of interstellar commerce by the end of TL–9. Numerous models of various tech levels and styles appear over a millennia to the present. The earliest ship models were believed to be from the Vilani Empire before the Ziru Sirka. [5]
Class Naming Practices & Peculiarities[edit]
The Type A itself doesn't have a specific naming practice. However, it's many classes and subclasses do. The naming practice of the Beowulf class Free Trader are best known. They are named after the heroes of literature. [6]
