Description (Specifications)
A crustaceanoid creature is distinguished by a number of characteristics:
- Segmented bodies consisting of two or more parts: typically a head section containing a mouth and the sensory organs and a body containing the major internal organs.
- An exoskeleton or a hard, shell-like covering on the outside of the body.
- Three or more pairs of jointed appendages referred to as legs. These are typically used for swimming or walking.
- Antennae, typically mounting sensory organs.
Similar Forms
Crustaceanoids are considered to be a relatively esoteric subclassification of Insectoid: the term is primarily used by biologists to specifically identify a creature type.
Specific Species Examples
- The Pill Bug, native to vegetated terrain on Terra.
- The Zyroach, a marine creature native to Thalassa in Dagudashaag Sector.
History & Background (Dossier)
Most biologists agree that a creature should exhibit at least three of the characteristics associated with crustaceanoids to qualify as a crustaceanoid, though others set the limit at two. The term is necessarily generic.
It is relatively common for a creature to meet sufficient criteria to qualify as more than one classification of animal.
