Darmine Corporate

The Darmine Corporate is a name given to a number of interstellar states from different historical periods.

Description (Specifications)

Early Period

The Darmine Corporate emerged as a concept when the Darmine received jump technology from Geonee traders more than eight millennia ago.

• The Dishaan, an aggressive, self-interested, and notoriously untrustworthy race from the world of Provalan, had received Geonee jump technology some time earlier.
• The Darmine and the Dishaan have been rivals since they first made contact with one another.

Notions of a regulated and policed Darmine Corporate state began to crystallize out of the difficult trading situations that were encountered with the Dishaan. The Corporate ideals were extinguished by the Ziru Sirka, which restricted the expansion of non-Vilani and tried to impose Vilani cultures and values on the region.

• At the same time, the Vilani dismantled the Dishaan Hegemony, removed the Dishaan from worlds they had claimed, and forcibly repatriated members of the race to Provalan, their homeworld.

Middle Period

The first extant Darmine Corporate state was formed during the Rule of Man and lasted until it was absorbed into the Imperium after the Ilelish Pacification Campaign. Its core worlds consisted of Ishag (the homeworld of the Darmine people), Dineal and Nidke (the first Darmine colonies), and the Darmine outposts at Siiskig, Driuden, and Warth.

It was considered to be an Interstellar federation but functioned more as a trade consortium than a federated state. It signed formal agreements with some worlds, regulated trade and suppressed piracy in areas where it had influence, and assisted colonization and settlement efforts, but matters such as diplomacy and security were left up to its associate worlds.

• At its height it had considerable influence over five subsectors.

By this time the Dishaan were entirely restricted to their homeworld and the Dishaan Hegemony was a minor historical footnote. The former Hegemony worlds of the Provalan Cluster had been home to culturally Vilani populations for millennia, and they had never been heavily influenced by the Darmine. However, they were just as resistant to Imperial expansion in the First Century as the Darmine, and the Cluster became a major focus of the Ilelish Pacification Campaign.

Much of the Corporate's influence followed the astrography of the Khipge Cluster to spinward-coreward, the Schmidt Cluster to coreward-trailing, and the Liasdi Main to rimward. The Khipge Cluster never entirely came under the sway of the Corporate.

• The Dishaan occupied the Provalan Cluster, to trailing, but were removed by the Ziru Sirka and supplanted by tenacious Vilani settlers.

When Dulinor was preparing his bid for power, he targeted the Darmine region for a subtle public relations campaign. In some respects, the campaign was a success. It renewed interest and pride in the Darmine culture. Unfortunately for Dulinor's plans, the destruction caused by the Rebellion and the questionable moral position of both Dulinor and Lucan appalled the Darmine. As a result, the Archduke never gained the base of popular support he needed in the region.

On 334-1119, Ishag, Dineal, and Nidke signed the Dineal Accords which inaugurated the new Darmine Corporate. The intention of the three worlds was to introduce some stability into the subsector by restoring commerce disrupted by the Rebellion.

The Corporate soon found that trade alone was not enough. In early 1120, the Accords were amended to give broad military and foreign policy powers to the consortium. As part of the amendment, a unified government was created, transforming the Corporate into a federation.

• An aggressive recruitment campaign yielded quick results: Driudin, Siiskig, and Warth, historically considered Darmine core worlds, were admitted to the Corporate on 123-1120.
• Assistance to the Darmine government came from an unexpected source. The so-called Darmine Underground worked to free political prisoners, influence governments, and advance the cause of peace. Consisting mainly of individuals of Darmine descent, the Underground did these things without the consent of, and often in defiance of, local authority.
