Empress Wave Speed & Effects (2018-19)[edit]

Inconsistency to resolve: If the Wave is an FTL effect, then it would not be possible to monitor it using Project Longbow as stated in the article, which measures EM emissions - the Wave would have passed by before it could be detected.

Good points. Do you have ideas about how to solve them?

- Maksim-Smelchak (talk) 12:54, 12 November 2018 (EST)

Simplest approach would be to remove reference to Project Longbow, which looks to be an artifact of a sublight Empress Wave.

Notes (2018)[edit]

Alternate Nomenclature: Non-Canon

Because many races and polities were not sharing what they had learned of the phenomenon, each named it by different terms in their native languages. Here are some regional names that stuck:

  • Zhodani - Yonder Chilling Thought
  • Imperium - Empress Wave
  • Gvegh (Knoellighz and Gvurrdon Sectors) - Mind Tsunami
  • Akumgeda (Ksinanirz and Thaku Fung Sectors) - Something Wicked
  • Roth Thokken (Angfutsag Sector) - The Dread
  • Yaskoydris' Cry
  • other Vargr - Throwback Trigger

Still more nomenclature was made up by those experiencing the Empress Wave. As more alternates appear, please report them here.

- The Pakkrat (talk) 05:31, 25 October 2018 (EDT)

More derisively, one report from a Gvegh Vargr Psion called the aftereffects of the phenomenon, Her Psionic Majesty referring to the hallucination of the Empress In Black appearing in the mental imagery of those who were affected and lived. The Pakkrat (talk) 12:35, 26 October 2019 (EDT)

Kline Inquiry (2017)[edit]

What triggered the wave and to what purpose? Did grandfather mess with the wrong Primordials and trigger an event? Which story did I miss?

- Ronald B. Kline, Jr. (talk) 07:35, 17 August 2017 (EDT)

We don't know.

  2. External Link: Okay, this will probably sound like a silly question to the more knowlegable, but what exactly is the Empress Wave?

Empress Wave Chart Color? (2015)[edit]

Hi Tjoneslo, is there any chance you could color in the Empress Wave chart with the colors of the various major race polities? Or tell me how to do it? I don't have the skill or knowledge for that yet. Thanks!
- Maksim-Smelchak (talk) 13:38, 5 March 2015 (EST)

Take a look at Sector, the Charted Space table has the correct way to set colors for the sectors:
 | style="color: #000; background-color: #7090FF"
The Template:Allegiance colors generated the correct color definition for each of the major empires. Tjoneslo (talk) 14:24, 5 March 2015 (EST)

Hi Tjoneslo, I know how to color it now and the task is on my list. Thanks, Thomas!

Empress Wave Speed & effects (2015)[edit]

The Empress Wave was sped up in the Mongoose Zhodani book. It is now an FTL phenomenon.
Not having the MGT Zhodani book, was the Empress Wave having the same effect on the Zhodani it was during the TNE era?
- Tjoneslo (talk) 22:11, 16 June 2015 (EDT)

Inconsistency to resolve: If the Wave is an FTL effect, then it would not be possible to monitor it using Project Longbow as stated in the article, which measures EM emissions - the Wave would have passed by before it could be detected.

Draft Timeline (2016)[edit]

All times are as according to the Imperial Calendar, with Zhodani calendar in parentheses, where I figured it out. It appears that the Zhodani were posting one core expedition approx. every 350 olympiads (788 standard years) though most of the dates for the missions intermediate the first and seventh are conjecture.

  • -4000: (1211.1) Zhodani First Core Expedition. Empress Wave (EW) is 1590 parsecs from modern Zhodani coreward frontier.
  • -3210: (1511.1) Second Core Expedition. EW is 1350parsecs to coreward.
  • -2390:Third Core Expedition.
  • -1620: Fourth Core Expedition. EW should have been encountered during this expedition, as it was only 870 parsecs from the Zhodani frontier. That means the Zhodani knew about it for at least 2500 to 2700 years BEFORE Longbow detected it.
    • Unless they just jumped right over it (easy to do if it doesn't actually stay in-system that long, and most of the damage is aftereffects from those who were in-system at the time - and/or it didn't stay in-system that long at the time, and got "thicker" by the time it reached Charted Space, e.g. maybe only a month or a week when the Core Expeditions first reached it vs. a year as of Charted Space), and on the rare occasion when their fleets did run into it, attributed it to fatigue or other dangers of long expeditions.
  • -810: Fifth Core Expedition
  • -20 to -30: Sixth Core Expedition
  • 589-604: First Frontier War
  • 615-620: Second Frontier War
  • 700-715: Wave breaks on main portion of Vlanchiets Qlom province.
  • 750 (3211.1): Seventh Core Expedition
  • 830: Wave reaches Chiterabl Sector, some 250 parsecs coreward of Zhdant.
  • 979-986: Third Frontier War
  • 994: EW breaks on Zhodani core frontier.
  • Approx. 1090-1115: Longbow detects unusual shipping patterns and evidence of space combat moving down Zhodani Core Axis.
  • 1116: Longbow detects EW. Strephon's double assasinated, Imperial Civil War begins. (At this time, the EW was less than a sector away from the Imperial border.)
  • 1119: Evidence of internal Zhodani insurrection detected at Esalin/Spinward Marches. (See survival margin)
  • 1123: Zhodani Tozjabr hit squad rumored to be dispatched to assasinate then-Archduke Norris.
  • 1130: AI virus released, Third Imperium collapses.
  • 1131: Spinward Accords signed, Quarantine established.
  • 1147: Regent Avery departs on mission to the Galactic Core to determine origin and nature of EW.
  • 1149: Final Core Expedition fails to leave Zhodani Consulate.
  • 1201: Zhodani Exodus begins.

| [A suggestion to revive Longbow for Imperial 1116: It's not some super-secret long-range FTL radar, or an Ancients artifact like the gadget the Zhodani use on their Core Expeditions. It comes from centuries to listening to Zhodani electronic chatter combined with cryptanalysis, humint, and maybe a few clandestine Imperial psions. I was with an Elint squadron for a few years; it's amazing what one can pick up even with equipment that still uses vacuum tubes.]
