Seed is a preindustrial world with a moderate population of over a hundred million, but not yet a billion sophonts.
- As a preindustrial world, this planet cannot yet manufacture enough high-technology resources to support a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
- This world has a colony at Sprout (Thaku Fung 1204).
Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]
Seed and Sprout are commonly known as the "Preserve's Gateway", being the two worlds immediately spinward of the Solomani Preserve. Virtually all traffic between the Preserve and the unaligned colonies on the spinward side of Thaku Fung Sector passes through these two systems. Support of trading vessels is their primary revenue source.

Mainworld Atmosphere[edit]
Seed has a pressure of 1.50 to 2.49 atmospheres. While a Dense Atmosphere requires no survival gear this atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds which requires the use of a Filter Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–3 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.

World Starport[edit]
Seed has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which features amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
Solomani Preserve interests have pressured the local government to keep the starport at this level (for instance by preventing the construction of a highport), though the locals have usually freely accommodated this request. Outsiders are to be fleeced for service fees and sent on their way. Anyone coming here to settle is asked for their reasons; anyone who speaks mostly of wanting to live somewhere other than the Preserve is sent spinward. It is the rare few would-be immigrants who arrive on Seed having read anything about it other than just that it is not part of the Preserve (though those who show interest in Seed for its own sake may be allowed in).
World Technology Level[edit]
Seed possesses a Technology Level of TL–9.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Fiber optics and satellite communication and data networks.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fusion power.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Ultra high-speed trains and early grav vehicles.
- Water: High efficiency sailcraft, multihulled seacraft, improved artificial gills.
- Air: Tiltrotorcraft, exotic VTOL's, PARWIG, and rocket-assisted suborbitals.
- Space: SSTO spacecraft, early military spacecraft (System Craft), and interstellar STL starships
- FTL: Prototype Jump Drive-1.
World Government[edit]
Seed is governed by a Representative Democracy where government leadership is by representatives elected by eligible voters. What determines an eligible voter varies. The representatives determine policy, including selecting members of the bureaucracy. There can be referenda, votes by eligible voters on specific subjects.
World Law Level[edit]
Light but not quite anarchic. Even Seed has its limits; Sprout was colonized for use by those interested in violating said limits (among other reasons).

World Culture[edit]
An independent and libertarian spirit has survived on Seed ever since its colonization. There are those who question how it has been able to persist without falling to some dictator seizing control. Conspiracy theories occasionally fly about how Seed is a long-term social experiment, set up by shadowy masters from the Solomani Preserve and maintained as both a useful resource (to screen any visitors from spinward) and ongoing social experiment from which to glean data to preserve a much larger society.
As it turns out, these theorists are largely correct, although most of the shadowy masters are from the Yaskoydri Technocracy a sector and a half away, and they did not set up operations until Seed had already been around for somewhat over half a century. In addition to the suspected reasons, they see themselves as assisting the Preserve in this fashion. The Preserve is aware of this, though it is classified; a select few Preserve psy-ops personnel assist with the ongoing operation. Investigators from Seed might be able to discover the truth if they spent much time in the Preserve, studying government records - but spending much time in the Preserve is something that Seed citizens are culturally averse to. Further, not much external manipulation is needed, since Seed already exports any seriously destabilizing elements to Sprout on its own. Almost all of the "manipulation" has been agents occasionally arranging for up-and-coming dictators to be publicly embarrassed, usually by revealing solid evidence of their plans for conquest, resulting in one-way trips to Sprout.
World Language/s[edit]
Anglic is the primary (and, depending on trade traffic, sometimes sole) language spoken here.

World Timeline[edit]
- -54: Colonized.
- -2: Establishes colony on Sprout.
- 252-254: Official protests as waves of capital ships from the Solomani Preserve head by to support the Yaskoydri Technocracy. One of the few instances in the history of Charted Space where a tank faces off against a capital ship - and, in the single case where fire was exchanged, one of the very few instances where a tank experiences a spinal particle beam firing at point blank range.
- 1046: Receives word of the Empress Wave from the Solomani Preserve - just as Sprout is being hit. Spends the next two years manufacturing low berth filled vaults for its population to ride the Wave out in.
- 1048: The Wave arrives one day before it was predicted to. Those who can hold onto their wits scramble into the vaults and seal them, but this locks out a number of citizens. That said, losses are mild compared to most worlds.
