Ryo is a nonindustrial world, that requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society.

  • In a technological universe, societies without industrial capability generally suffer as nearly all manufactured and high tech goods must be brought in at significant cost.
  • As a nonindustrial world, it requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. The need to import most manufactured and high technology goods drives the price of these goods up in the open market.
  • This world is part of the Aslan Hierate, as a world where multiple clans have split control of the planet, in the Ryuwahah Subsector of Afawahisa Sector.

Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]

This world borders the Great Rift.

Mainworld Data[edit]

Mainworld Size (S)[edit]

Ryo is a Meso World between 8,800km and 10,400km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.6G and 0.8G. The horizon will appear about 4.4km away.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]

Ryo has a pressure of 0.43 to 0.70 atmospheres. While the thin atmosphere does not require survival gear this atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds which requires the use of a Filter Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–3 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]

Ryo has 85-95% of its surface covered by liquid water with a few small continents, and a number of islands and archipelagos. Dry land is limited. Wilderness refueling is possible.

Native Life[edit]

Large marine animals are known to threaten seagoing vessels.

Native fauna includes the Okhoikoil, a plesiosaur-like creature. They are normally solitary but occasionally come together in groups of a dozen or more, presumably to breed. They lay claim to some islands and the shallow water around them, even lurching up on to a beach from time-to-time. They are also known to pluck crewmembers off the deck of a ship.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

This world was attractive enough to be settled by several clans in competition. Wide separation between settlements meant little conflict, but -- perhaps because Ryo was relatively forgiving -- too little effort was made to ensure growth and stability of early colonies. The result was an inability to sustain equipment and a gradual slide towards a more basic existence once initial support missions ended.

World Starport (St)[edit]

Ryo has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which features amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World Population (P)[edit]

Ryo has a population of 9,000,000 sophonts (millions).

  • This is a Nonindustrial World, too small to support the complete chain of production of most goods from start to finish.
  • The population consists of Aslan.

World Languages[edit]

  • Trokh: The universal language of the modern Aslan monoculture.
    • Aslan Languages: Note that some Aslan clans retain obscure or archaic languages for personal use in addition to Trokh.

Urbanization[edit]

Aslan architecture tends to the organic and the rounded. They favour artistry over efficiency in the design of their buildings -- every Aslan structure is different. Even in mass-produced housing, residents will strive to make their territory uniquely theirs.

  • Since Aslan descend from predators and enjoy open terrain, their buildings often feature both open rooms of great size and a number of concealed rooms, balconies, hidden passageways and hideaways.

World Technology Level (T)[edit]

Ryo possesses a Technology Level of TL–4.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Telephone and telegraphs, widespread printing.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early electricity, hydrocarbon internal combustion.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
  • An advanced steam-powered civilisation has emerged, implementing concepts remembered from the starfaring era by means of complex mechanical systems. The steamships of Ryo are the lifeblood of its economy, plying the deep oceans between scattered enclaves.

World Government (G)[edit]

Ryo is governed by Self-Perpetuating Oligarchy. A single family or small group provides the leadership and important positions in the government. These positions are inherited by member of the group or their family members. The organization may be a monarchy, with titles passed to family members, or a plutocracy where inheritance of the family fortune includes government position. Alternatively, the organization may be a more typical government apparatus, only with positions of power inherited.

World Military[edit]

No information yet available.

World Law (L)[edit]

Ryo has a moderate law level with laws covering many areas of government and interaction. These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials will be present, but not in great numbers. Light assault weapons, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.

Criminal acts are rare but not unheard of in Aslan society. Crimes are different from the insults or slurs that provoke duels, and are classified into three categories: crimes of passion, crimes with victims, and crimes of honour.

  • Crimes of passion involve misbehavior prompted by temper, anger, or provocation. The accused is judged by the head of the family, pride, or clan involved.
  • Crimes with victims involve taking money or items of value, or violating the person of another for profit (kidnapping, terrorism, piracy). General practice is to have an impartial earleatrais consider the case and present findings.
  • Crimes of honour involve failure to observe the rituals established for social behaviour. Judgement is made by the pride or clan head, depending on the severity of the crime. Crimes of honour are the most serious in Aslan society; in practice, most are never tried as a duel to the death occurs first.
