The Rho Cluster is an astrographic feature located in the Rho Subsector of Gakghang Sector and Nest Subsector of Thaku Fung Sector. It is also the name of a quasi-polity located in said feature.

Allegiance Codes[edit]

Polity Astronavigational Codes
Polity Survey Code Type Remarks
No polity Pre-Imperial No standard code None
Rho Cluster 1st Survey (300) Rc 2-ltr code None
Rho Cluster 2nd Survey (1065) RhCl 4-ltr code None

The Rho Cluster (as a polity) was unknown to the Imperial Interstellar Scout Service until 1104, but following standard practice, the above codes were retroactively added upon the Society's discovery.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

The main part of the Rho Cluster is a triangle of five systems in Rho Subsector, which was named for this cluster. Combined with the systems on the spinward side of Nest Subsector, it was thought to look like a mirror of the letter rho, from the Greek culture on ancient Terra. (In truth, it is closer to the Phonecian letter resh, from which rho was derived.) Thaku Fung Sector was formerly known by the Solomani as Sigma Zephyrus Sector; while the Solomani Preserve adopted the vargr name for the area, those who colonized the Rho Cluster wished to distinguish themselves, so they settled on a name that was "adjacent to sigma" (rho being one letter before sigma), just as the core part of the cluster is adjacent to Sigma Zephyrus Sector. As the initial colonists were mostly Pirian, the whole affair has been popularly taken as a footnote on Pirian culture.

The worlds have been in an economic and military alliance, administered from Mondome, since Mondome was founded. They claim no dominion over each other, just the right to intervene to "ensure that certain commercial and moral standards continue to be followed", such as a ban on slavery. In practice, this amounts to making sure their starports remain open to one another.

The Empress Wave has reduced the cluster to just four inhabited worlds, plus a crew operating out of Gaesya just permanently enough to technically qualify it as a fifth inhabited world. While no worlds in the Rho Cluster press a formal claim over their abandoned worlds, standard practices by other nearby polities mean their former worlds are included in star charts.

Given the stellar density of the region, locally-manufactured ships tend to have jump-3 capability minimum, and jump-4 is notably more common than in the Third Imperium.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Gaesya and Kewaerie, having recently received new names in the Pirian cultural revolution after meeting the Solomani Preserve, were the first to be colonized, in 33 and 36 respectively to support trade traffic between the Solomani Preserve and the Yaskoydri Technocracy.

With Kewaerie only a jump-3 away from the presumed Ancients relic on Mondome, the Solomani Preserve colonized Mondome in 40 officially to "anchor the resupply bases". A museum on Mondome holds documents showing this meant "provide adult supervision". The colonists - mostly scientists and technicians - sent to Mondome rebelled at being asked to provide such paternalism, and instead set up industry to supply the other two worlds what they could not produce on their own. When pirate attacks blossomed this arrangement into military assistance, the agreement was formalized in 72.

The spirit of the alliance has remained remarkably consistent all the way through 1105, even if the core documents have been rewritten completely 11 times, and significantly edited 16 further times, in that time period.
