The ranks of Master Sergeant (E7+) are the non-commissioned officer ranks in the Imperial Army for the most senior non-commissioned officers in the Imperial Army leadership structure.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

Master Sergeants comprise the three highest grades of NCO ranks, though in the higher two ranks (E8 & E9) they tend to be known by the titles of their specific individual appointments, and are considered to be the equivalent of a Warrant Officers.

The basic rank names of the Master Sergeant grades are:

  • E7 - Master Sergeant
  • E8 - Senior Master Sergeant
  • E9 - Chief Master Sergeant

Each Company in the Imperial Army has one Master Sergeant who is the seniormost Sergeant in the unit (usually appointed as the "Leading Sergeant" (E7), "First Sergeant" (E8), or "Company Sergeant Major" (CSM/E8), depending on unit size and unit tradition). Some Imperial Army Regimental (or higher) staff appointments are also for Master Sergeants, such as "Company Quartermaster Sergeant" (CQS/E7), "Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant" (RQS/E8), "Battalion Sergeant Major" (BSM/E9), or "Regimental Sergeant Major" (RSM/E9).

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

The term sergeant refers to a non-commissioned officer placed above the rank of a corporal. The term master sergeant thus refers to a position of seniority among these sergeants within a company, and usually implied responsibility over some specialist or technical role.

Historically, Sergeants were often responsible for ensuring the troops of a company or larger were accommodated, fed and equipped. They still have part of this role. As a consequence they may serve in the appointment of and be known as a Quartermaster Sergeant. Sergeants also were sometimes charged with protecting the regimental flags (colours) of the field of battle, and still have such a role in ceremonials today. When performing this role they are still addressed as Colour Sergeant.
