Gikarlum (TR 2234) is a nonindustrial world, that requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society.
- In a technological universe, societies without industrial capability generally suffer as nearly all manufactured and high tech goods must be brought in at significant cost.
- As a nonindustrial world, it requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. The need to import most manufactured and high technology goods drives the price of these goods up in the open market.
- It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Hkea'as Subsector of Trojan Reach Sector.
Description (Planetology)[edit]
This world is part of the Eaohfose Cluster. It is located on the edge of the Great Rift.
System Data[edit]
The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld.
- x5 secondary rocky worlds.
- x4 gas giants.
- x1 planetoid belt.
Mainworld Data[edit]
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Gikarlum is a Small World between 4,000km and 5,600km in diameter. The world has low gravity between 0.24G and 0.34G. The horizon will appear about 3km away.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Gikarlum has a pressure of less than 0.1 atmospheres which requires the use of a Vacc Suit. TL–8 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Gikarlum has no free-standing water or ice on the surface. Wilderness refueling isn't possible on this world. Water for the inhabitants needs to be imported and extensively recycled. These worlds are classified Desert World or a Hell World depending on their atmosphere.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
This world was settled by the descendants of the King Hurg V, a Drinaxian colony ship that was en route to Tisilli when the ship's drives failed and it ended up landing on Gikarlum.
- The system of ranks and positions on the colony ship evolved into a hereditary caste system.
- Eventually Gikarlum re-established contact with the rest of the galaxy.
Later Eras[edit]
Gikarlum is very traditional, all aspects of the traditional caste system are enforced by the bureaucratic government. The world is not a popular place for crews from either the Regency or the Aslan to visit, as the local authorities are not very keen on turning their world into a watering hole for either, and keep the amenities that attract offworld spacers to a minimum.
World Starport (Sp)[edit]
Gikarlum has a Class B Starport, a good quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and most kinds of repair, and construction of non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.
World Population (P)[edit]
Gikarlum has a population of 700,000 sophonts (hundreds of thousands).
- This is a Nonindustrial World, too small to support the complete chain of production of most goods from start to finish.
World Government (G)[edit]
Gikarlum is governed by a Civil Service Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government takes another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy leadership influences policy. The government leadership may select the bureaucracy leadership, but not its membership. Usually the governmental leadership is divided, or incapable of setting policy, and the bureaucracy provides a stabilizing influence. This ruling bureaucracy may be the full government bureaucractic apparatus or a section with limited jurisdiction but considerable influence, like the military.
World Law Level (L)[edit]
Gikarlum has a moderate law level with laws covering many areas of government and interaction. These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials will be present, but not in great numbers. All firearms, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.
World Technology Level (TL)[edit]
Gikarlum possesses a Technology Level of TL–9.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Fiber optics and satellite communication and data networks.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fusion power.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Ultra high-speed trains and early grav vehicles.
- Water: High efficiency sailcraft, multihulled seacraft, improved artificial gills.
- Air: Tiltrotorcraft, exotic VTOL's, PARWIG, and rocket-assisted suborbitals.
- Space: SSTO spacecraft, early military spacecraft (System Craft), and interstellar STL starships
- FTL: Prototype Jump Drive-1.
World Military[edit]
No information yet available.
World Economy[edit]
Gikarlum once traded with Burgess (as much as it could given a merchant navy of ten ships), but the expansion of the Tiykhisto clan into the area has blocked this trade route.
