Space

Space, is the astrographic sense, is an interplanetary location void of matter.

• It does not mean completely void of matter since trace amounts of baryonic matter often exist within interstellar space. In practical terms, space amounts to an interstellar vacuum.

Description (Specifications)

Space in the most generic sense is what occupies the vast majority of the interstellar medium; it is void, emptiness, and a lack of baryonic matter. Some think of it as vacuum, others as nothingness, and even others as the home of dark matter. Whatever it is, it is a major constituent of interstellar space, that vast area between the planets, stars, and other astrographic features.

Astronomical Definition

Space is vacuum: the absence of substantial concentrations of ordinary matter (the baryonic matter and leptons that compose most of the observable mass of the universe). Nearly all of the volume of the universe is space, and remains unexplored by sophonts from Charted Space.

Outer Space and Deep Space

Outer Space is a loose term indicating space beyond the outer atmosphere of a planet, if it has an atmosphere.

• Deep Space is a loose term for space beyond a stellar system.
• The Far System is considered Deep Space.

Dark Matter

Dark Matter is a mysterious constituent of the universe. It is difficult to detect with conventional sensor instrumentation, and yet may compose the majority of the matter in the universe. It is different than baryonic matter, the stuff that makes up most planets, stars, and lifeforms.

Spacetime Continuum

The Spacetime Continuum is a term for the regular, baseline universe with measurable physical, temporal, and scientific laws governing it. When one leaves the Spacetime Continuum such as in jumpspace or a pocket universe, a different set of physical laws may be encounterd.

Theory of Space

The very theory of space is a profound abstract concept. Much in the way that the numeral zero had the capacity to revolutionize the mathematics of a sophont society, space often has the capacity to revolutionize the physical sciences. Some of the fields revolutionized by space theory include:

What separates less advanced minor races and more advanced minor races or major races is the exploitation of gradually increasing spheres of influence. Many very viable sophont races never amount to much on the interstellar scene because they never leave the bounds of their own gravity well.

Practically speaking, advanced species enter, manipulate, and eventually control the space surrounding their homeworld, whether interplanetary space, interstellar space, or, when the technology allows it, intergalactic space. Dozens of ways exist for demarcating astrographic areas of control. Many of these demarcations are sociographic in nature, rather than astrophysical, and considerable overlap often occurs.
