Description[edit]

Name[edit]

The MV Caroline is named for Lady Caroline Peters-Havasu, a diplomat of the Third Frontier War whose efforts in the Tuglikki Sector ensured the good treatment of so many Imperial prisoners held by the Vargr .

Registration[edit]

The MV Caroline was registered at Regina from 1102.

As a registered ship, the MV Caroline was deemed a legal person in Imperial Law with the "Ships Officers" delegated to handle the ship's legal affairs.

Upper Forward Access Hatch[edit]

See Forward Access Hatch on A-Deck

Communications Aerials[edit]

The communications aerials for are stored in a protective trench in the hull during re-entry, but are otherwise deployed. Atmospheric ionisation effects of re-entry cause communications-blackouts anyway and thus the stowing of the aerials makes no effective difference to communications effectiveness.

These are for the main transmitters in the Computer Room.

Sand Launcher Array[edit]

The ships Sandcaster turret is an array of 36 launch tubes externally loaded and each able to fire once. The fire-control systems are only able to control the placement of 3 rounds at a time which gives the battery 12 salvos if fired at the maximum rate.

Reloading is a task that is undertaken through EVA, but it is rare that and contact lasts long enough for a reloading to have to occur. Reloading each tube takes about 3 minutes from the time when the munition is ready next to the tube.

Rounds loaded may include:

  • Anti-Laser "Sand"
  • Chaff
  • Pebbles
  • Sensor Decoy

EW Aerial Array[edit]

This is a unique feature to the MV Caroline in her role as diplomatic courier. The Akhii Shum Electronics EW package is one of the best available in the commercial market on Regina and while not quite up to Imperial Military Grade, is more than enough for the Vargr Extents.

  • Area Jammer: 50,000km

Drone Hanger[edit]

The various recreational and security uses of a remote sensor platform mean that the ship has available a single Advanced Probe Drone. This stored in a hanger on the upper hull. The APD can be deployed in space or in an atmosphere, but in an atmosphere it may only be deployed and recovered safely at sub-sonic speeds.

Upper Aft Access Hatch[edit]

See Aft Access Hatch on A-Deck.

Aft Turret[edit]

This is a remotely operated triple laser turret. Normally, this turret and the Chin Turret (see Fuel Deck) will be slaved together as a single battery. The gunners station for this turret in on the bridge.

There is no option for manual, in-turret operation of this turret, and there is no internal access for use or maintenance.

Room Descriptions: A Deck: Main Deck[edit]

MV Caroline - A-Deck - Low Res.jpg

Bridge[edit]

Slightly altered from the standard Destiny Class, the 5-abrest seating is continued, but a captains seat - relying solely on holographic projections for control purposes - has been added behind. The seats allow the ship to operate with Laser-Gunner, Astrogator/Sensor Operator, Pilot, EW Officer and Sand-Gunner.

The Bridge Coffeepot is located adjacent to the Laser-Gunner's station.

The Bridge is fully provided with Holographic Controls. This gives a bonus to the responsiveness of the vessel during contacts and often allows the crew to gain the initiative over other vessels not similarly equipped.

The Bridge Doors are fully secure and are generally kept shut. Opening the door requires the computer to confirm the identity of the person attempting the process. Additionally, a set of 4 locking pins can be manually engaged by the occupants that prevent the door opening electronically.

The bow of the Bridge is made from and expensive, transparent diamond-crystal-matrix which gives the crew an excellent view while providing the protection equivalent to the crystal-iron used for the remainder of the vessel. There are also overhead sky-lights made of the same substance.

The rear of the Bridge has been fitted with two secure lockers, and in the space in the 'eaves' above the bridge is the main avionics cabinet. The secure lockers include Sporting Shotguns, Hunting Rifles for general use and Accelerator Rifles, Stunners and Stun Sticks for ship defence. It also includes storage for personal weapons of Crew or Passengers unless specifically re-issued by the Ships Officers.

Forward Sensor Arrays[edit]

To port and starboard of the Bridge are aerial bays for the main sensor suite.

  • LADAR: 180,000km range
  • Active EMS: 240,000km
  • Passive EMS: 150,000km including Direction Finder

Life Support Cabinet[edit]

Beyond the Bridge Fresher lies one of the life-support cabinets. This small room houses the majority of the atmosphere recycling equipment for the bridge and crew quarters.

This cabinet has 2000 man-hours of emergency oxygen in chemical-based self-contained oxygen generation units.

The starboard side fibre-optic network patch panel is in this room.

Bridge Fresher[edit]

This room contains toilet and wash basin but also contains stores for some of the more valuable parts that the ship is required to hold, and some of the emergency equipment that may be required by a damage-control party - including an emergency airlock and enough rescue-balls for the entire crew and passenger complement.

Computer Room[edit]

This room contains not only some of the the major processors for the ship-wide network of fibre-optic computer network, but also contains the port-side network patch panels.

A very small desk is provided for such electronics work as may be periodically required.

This space is the only one in which Data and Software may be uploaded onto the closed Ship Control Network. (See also Virtual Environment below.)

This room also includes the equipment rack for the main radio communications equipment.

General Products 1000AU range broadcast radio transceiver
General Products 1000AU range tight-beam maser transceiver

n.b. the communications receivers are integrated into the sensor array and will allow received transmission bearings to be plotted.

Crew Area[edit]

The yacht has a very poor provision for the crew's off-watch hours. A table for two, and a minimal coffee and food heating station. It does have a hand-basin though!. Cupboards at the coffee station contain crockery, cutlery, coffee, washing up materials and waste disposal/recycling collection.

The headroom above the crew area is lower than is the case in many other places in the ship as there is considerable air-processing machinery in a ceiling cavity.

Forward Access Hatch[edit]

Forward Access Hatch on A-Deck

The Forward Access Hatch is actually a series of hatchess - in-line and one above the other when the vessel is landed.

The upper of these hatches allows access to the Upper Hull. This is a double-iris valve - the gap between them can be used as an air-lock for small items, but is not large enough for most Sophonts. This gap is caused by the ceiling cavity on A-Deck in which more the life-support equipment is found (See Crew Area).

The next hatch is that between A-Deck and B-Deck, This is a main thoroughfare between these decks for the crew in that it allows access from the Crew Section in A'Deck to the engineering spaces on B-Deck.

The space on B-Deck is a true airlock used by the crew for accessing the ground when the ship is landed. (see Crew Airlock in B-Deck.)

The Access Hatch in the floor of B-Deck opens about 3m off the ground when the MV Caroline is landed. There is a ladder that can be extended to the ground from this lowest hatch. This ladder may be supplemented by an extensible tunnel, for use in inhospitable atmospheres or vacuums, that can be made airtight provided the lock at the other end accepts Imperial Standard Docking Links.

The extension and retraction of the ladder and/or tube is controlled from the Crew Airlock on B-Deck or from the Bridge.

Captain's Cabin[edit]

This is the main office for the ships commander as well as the private cabin of the ships senior officer.

This cabin is decorated to the Captain's personal taste (e.g. the hand-woven rug laid by the ship's first captain is shown in the deck-plan), but includes a number of specific ship related equipment.

  • Ship Control Network Access Point (Holographic Controls)
  • Captain's Safe
  • Meeting Desk

This cabin has the luxury of 4 separate windows, each made of Diamond-Crystal-Matrix, a double bed, and a large wardrobe space. It has, however, a standard Fresher unit.

Meetings of the entire crew will see chairs brought from all over to allow everyone to be seated!

Crew Staterooms (x2)[edit]

These staterooms are mirror images of the Standard Passenger Staterooms but these are inside the Crew Quarters so they are equipped with Ship Control Network workstations.

These are decorated to the mutual taste of the occupants.

Crew Double Stateroom[edit]

Also known as the ships Bunkroom, this space holds accommodation for up to 4 crewmembers. Unlike the other Crew rooms, this has no Ship Control Network work station and occupants have to make do with the General Network while in here.

Fortunately, it is not common for the entire set of occupants to be present in this space at one time because of their duties about the ship.

Main Airlock[edit]

This is both an airlock and a docking port and has an extensible docking tube (see External Fixtures and Fittings below).

At some 6m above ground when the ship is landed, this is accessible via a stair that extends from the hull of the ship - but under these circumstances the Main Lift is often used instead. When at a major starport or station, the port may be accessed by the ports own mobile stairs or jetway or (if in orbit) be docked to the port directly using the extensible link.

Note that this airlock's doors are interlocked for safety reasons and only one may be open at once.

Ships Locker[edit]

Although this space is officially listed as the "Ships Locker" the actual collection of cupboards, cabinets, etc. in which the ships stores, spaces and replacements are located are actually spread throughout the ship.

This particular set of storage units includes passenger linen, tableware, emergency equipment and entertainment goods.

It also includes the butler's pantry in the form of a set of temperature controlled racks able to hold 300 bottles of various beverages. A week's travel with 8 high class passengers on a bender can see this supply seriously depleted at the end.

Passenger Lounge[edit]

This space allows the passengers to mingle and relax away from their cabins. It acts as the formal dining room and "The Captain's Table". On the original "Destiny Class" this was described as "a large, reconfigurable passenger lounge that can act as a dining area, game room, dance floor, or whatever".

Bar[edit]

This is a bar. It includes temperature controlled storage for Bottles, racks for Glasses, various items for drink decoration, and a dishwasher for clean-up. The Ship's Locker (q.v.) holds the ship's main drinks cellar.

Main Lift[edit]

This is the main means by which passengers move from floor to floor aboard the ship. The lift itself is well appointed and able to operate in a vacuum as the lift may pass outside the hull for loading and unloading when landed, or accessing the outer hull when in space. The lift should not be extended if the ship is flying in an atmosphere because of the drag effects, but the captain may order this to happen in an emergency.

The lift will only operate if a living crew member is in the lift and orders the change of deck. Under normal circumstances, the lift is left closed on B-Deck.

The lift is an airlock, but it is not a docking port. It is rated to carry up to 24 persons or 3600kg of mixed persons and goods in 1G.

Medical Bay (including Medical Store)[edit]

This space includes an Autodoc and those items of equipment, drugs and supplies that may be needed to treat passengers or crew during their voyages. There are about KCr 100 worth of supplies in this room at any one time!

The most widely dispensed medications are for self-inflicted over-indulgences by the passengers and crew.

Upper Passenger Luggage Store[edit]

This is 1/3rd of the storage required to carry the number of high-passage persons that can be accommodated by the ship.

Access to this area by passengers is permitted only when accompanied by a crew member. If crew members require access to this area without being accompanied by a passenger, they must go in pairs.

See also Lower Passenger Luggage Store on B-Deck.

Galley & Pantry[edit]

Somehow, this small space - just 3m by 3m - manages to produce no less than 3 meals per day for the entire complement aboard and (when in port) guests too. It holds equipment for preparing, cooking, serving and cleaning up. There is storage space of Cutlery and Crockery and for Ingredients. The Pantry holds Ingredients in temperature controlled storage. The Stewards hold absolute sway over this domain, and entry is jealously guarded. Infringements are punished with some of the least pleasant duties on the ship.

Standard Passenger Stateroom (x4)[edit]

Each stateroom is capable of sleeping two people in a bunk arrangement, or the top bunk may be folded into the wall if the second person is not being accommodated.

Single Passenger Stateroom[edit]

This stateroom is capable of sleeping only one person and has a slightly reduced standard of facilities due to the reduced size. It is often used to house a personal Valet or Maid for the main guest aboard.

Steward's Cuddy[edit]

This is the Stewards office. It also home to the cleaning bot, the two washing machines, the valeting equipment, silver polish and cloths, etc.

This has workstation for the Steward on the General Network.

Access to the Steward's Cuddy is jealously guarded by the Steward's themselves and use of their equipment by the remainder of the crew without permission is not to be contemplated - even by the Captain!

Executive Stateroom (x2)[edit]

These staterooms sleep two persons in a state of some luxury and are fitted out to a high standard. The additional space allows for a separate shower-room and a dressing area.

Hydroponics Racks[edit]

The ship has two Hydroponics racks in the main circulation area - designed by the famous Regina gardener and horticulturalist Dansish Flores. These give both a pleasing spectacle for the travellers, and provide salad vegetables for the passengers and crew.

The planting and harvesting of the racks is a part of the steward's job - and the maintenance of the area must occur daily or the effectiveness of the rack starts to drop.

The racks are guaranteed for sustained accelerations of up to 2G and instantaneous accelerations for up to 20G - and air pressures from 500 to 1200kPa. Air CO2 levels should be held above 3% for the plants to grow efficiently. Temperatures in the cabin must be kept above 280K and below 330K for the best productivity.

Passenger Circulation Area[edit]

This is an area in which passengers circulate - whether they are passing to their Staterooms or to the Vehicle Hanger. There is a Sofa should they decide to linger.

The wall between the Passenger Circulation Area and the Steward's Cuddy is a holographic projector and is used to display various art-images from the ship's library.

The headroom is relatively low here as there is considerable air-processing equipment in the ceiling cavity.

Aft Access Hatch[edit]

The Aft Access Hatch is actually a series of hatches - in-line and one above the other when the vessel is landed.

The upper of these hatches allows access to the Upper Hull. This is an iris-valve.

The next hatch is that between A-Deck and B-Deck, This is an alternative thoroughfare that is rarely used, but is handy for passing supplies into the engineering spaces from the vehicle bay.

The space on A-Deck is a true airlock and can be used by the crew for accessing the Upper Hull. The three hatches into this space are electronically interlocked - two must be closed for the third to be able to open.

n.b. This hatch does not have an extending tube for simple transfer between ships and users should be provided with Vacc-Suits with EVA packs (or other appropriate environmental gear) and/or safety lines when exiting this hatch.

Vehicle Bay and Airlock[edit]

This deck has space for a 5 dTon vehicle (a 4 DTon GP-6D is provided as standard) and three 1.5 dTon Grav-Bikes. This is a fully working maintenance hanger and thus has appropriate tools and equipment for this task along the sides. The entire space can open to Vacuum, so the maintenance area's cabinets and tools are able to cope with that environment.

This space includes hoses and connections for refuelling the vehicles in the hanger.

Room Descriptions: B Deck: Engineering Deck[edit]

MV Caroline - B-Deck - Low Res.jpg

Crew Airlock[edit]

See Forward Access Hatch on A-Deck.

Fuel Tankage[edit]

The MV Caroline stores parahydrogen fuel at 15K. 45 dTons are stored in 'B' deck's fuel tanks.

The tanks are baffled against sloshing and internal valves allow the tankage to be isolated into sections of 10-15 dTons in case of leaks or breaches.

Landing Gear Well Access[edit]

There is access via air-tight floor hatches in B-Deck into the landing gear wells. Note that opening these hatches breaks the atmospheric integrity of the engineering deck. The Port, Forward Landing Gear Well is only accessible via a narrow crawl-space. This space is concealed behind a wall panel. This crawl-space also gives access to the freshwater tank and associated pump machinery via another hatch. Opening the water-pumping hatch does not break the atmosphere-seal.

Workshop[edit]

The Workshop is able to fabricate a number of major parts for the ship, and refurbish others. It has a 3-D printer and other heavy-machine tools, welders, drills, etc as well as the usual took kits for general maintenance and starship engineering tasks.

The workbench has a holographic display linked to the the ships operating and maintenance manuals and the AI's help and advice.

Main Lift[edit]

See Main Lift on A-Deck

Lower Passenger Luggage Store[edit]

This is 2/3rds of the storage required to carry the number of high-passage persons that can be accommodated by the ship.

Access to this area by passengers is permitted only when accompanied by a crew member. If crew members require access to this area without being accompanied by a passenger, they must go in pairs.

See also Upper Passenger Luggage Store on A-Deck.

n.b. This store is rarely filled by the passenger's luggage and is used for storing additional chairs, beds or other items (e.g. New Year Decorations) used to adorn the ship's passenger quarters.

Powerplant[edit]

The powerplant is a General Products 12 Laser/Gravitic Fusion Powerplant with MHD power extraction providing Engineering Power, Domestic Power, Heating (where needed) and a (tiny) supply of waste 4He and a larger supply of un-transformed 2H.

This area also has the main engineering station located in it. This has a Ship Control Network" workstation keyed to the Engineer and Captain only.

The area has a small amount of storage for spare parts and tools.

Emergency Generator[edit]

This gives 30-minutes of power at 90% of the output of the main powerplant before the whole system shuts down. Resetting the Emergency Generator is a major refurbishment job for the engineer.

Main Battery[edit]

This gives the ability to add 22% to the ships power for 6 minutes to provide emergency supply or cater for surges in demand. The power stored is adequate to fully charge the Jump Drive even if the rest of the ship is entirely powered down.

Engineering Corridor[edit]

This corridor runs from Port to Starboard and terminates at each end with an external hatch. n.b. these hatches are neither docking ports nor airlocks. The corridor is broken up at two points such that the Nacelles (i.e. Manoeuvre Drive rooms, Fuel Scoops and Fuel Treatment processors) are separate from the remainder of the engineering spaces.

Jump Drive[edit]

The MV Caroline utilises a custom General Products B-657 15 dTon Jump Drive capable of propelling it through Jump Space for up to two parsecs. The drive is slightly overpowered for the exact displacement and thus uses 30 dTons of fuel for each parsec achieved.

The floor plan shows that the Engineer has rigged a hammock in a quiet corner so he doesn't have to head back to his cabin every night and listen to the rest of the crew snoring!

Manoeuvre Drive (Port and Starboard)[edit]

The Campaign:BTC/Caroline has a twin General Products 1080 Manoeuvre Drive which yields 4G acceleration for the vessel at full power. The advantage of the configuration is that while one drive is operating, the other can be shut-down for maintenance - although, with the strain that is put on the hull in such circumstances, this is not recommended for long periods.

The ship has auxiliary thrusters allowing fine position adjustment.

If the ship is spun at its maximum rate it can do an entire rotation in just 3 seconds. This is NOT recommended as the apparent centrifugal force at the bridge (12G) exceeds the inertial compensator's capacity to compensate.

Fuel Purification Plant (Port and Starboard)[edit]

The MV Caroline uses four of the General Products FTC-15 Fuel Treatment Modules to allow it to process a total of 80dTons of unrefined fuel per day. The modules are provided with electrolytic hydrogen extraction nozzles than can be deployed in any body of water for collection of fuel from that source.

Fuel Scoops (Port and Starboard)[edit]

The Fuel Scoops allow the ship to take on hydrogen from Gas-Giants. The scoops capture the gas from the atmosphere, and cool it to 15K, converting Orthohydrogen to Parahydrogen in the process. This gas will be contaminated by other chemicals and, while it may be used as a fuel directly, will normally be cleaned by the Fuel Purification Plant before final storage in the Fuel Tanks.

Room Descriptions: Fuel Deck[edit]

MV Caroline - Fuel Deck - Low Res.jpg

General[edit]

This deck is not intended for access by living beings other than travelling through by lift or climbing past on the forward ladder.

Forward Access Ladder[edit]

See Forward Access Hatch on A-Deck

Chin Turret[edit]

Identical to Aft Turret on Upper Hull.

Fuel Tankage[edit]

See also Fuel Tankage on B-Deck

There are 33 dTons of fuel storage on this deck.

Water Tanks & Recycling[edit]

There are two water-tanks just aft of the forward gear wells. The Port tank is for fresh water; the Starboard one is for composting sewerage. Sullage feeds directly into the recycling system. Between the two is the recycling system. Access to this restricted crawl-space is via a hatches from B-Deck.

Landing Gear Well (x4)[edit]

Each of the 4 landing gear wells holds one landing leg. See External Fittings for details of the landing gear itself.

Each landing gear well is enclosed by a weather cover and is not normally accessible from within the ship. A vacuum-tight maintenance hatch is provided for maintenance access from B-Deck. n.b. The well is not airtight and thus the hatch is normally held shut by the internal air-pressure in addition to the latches.

Main Lift[edit]

See Main Lift on A-Deck

Sensor Aerials[edit]

Additional aerials for the main sensor array (See Bridge on A-Deck).

External Fixtures and Fittings[edit]

Landing Gear[edit]

The landing gear is based on a 4-point touch-down and can operate successfully at ground speeds up to 0.72kph, with safe landing speed being set at 0.5kph. Vertical speeds of up to 7kph (2m/s) can be easily absorbed. Above 14kph (4m/s) the landing legs may damage the shock-absorbers.

Port Services[edit]

When docked at a starport the vessel looks to take food, drink, fuel, air, water, data, power and to discharge sewerage and other waste and recyclable products.

To avoid the accidental mixing of incompatible supplies (e.g. water and power), the ports for these supplies are separated. The Water inlet valve is by the front port landing leg. Sewerage discharge valve is by the starboard front leg. Fuel loading valves are mid-way down the port side, both data and power ports are by the rear port landing leg.

Food, drink, etc. for the purser's department are normally loaded via the main lift.

Jump Grid[edit]

The MV Caroline utilises a standard Imperial square grid pattern in Lanthanum with each connector node utilising the tried and trusted General Products 84413 activator. This yields a jump-field at a distance of 2.828m from the hull exterior. Each activator is dual-wired on the conventionally named "Port" and "Starboard" jump-power distribution circuits.

Electrolytic Hydrogen Extraction Nozzles[edit]

The two outer pods each contain, in their forward sections, two fuel processors. These can draw on and convert water to Hydrogen fuel utilising Electrolytic Hydrogen Extraction Nozzles. These nozzles are connected to the Fuel Processing Plant using hoses that are reeled within the pods and can deploy into a body of water up to 50m from the pod.

Airlock Access Equipment[edit]

There are two airlocks with Imperial standard extensible access docking tubes. The Forward Access Hatch (See A-deck) and the Main Airlock (also see A-Deck).

Additionally, the hull includes a set of folding stairs that may be deployed to allow passengers to pass from the ground to the main airlock. These wend their way from the Main Airlock to the ground ending adjacent to the Main Lift. This set of stairs is NOT protected from the local environment and can thus be used only if the person using it has the appropriate protective equipment. Control of the deployment of these stairs is controlled by the crew from the Bridge or from the Main Airlock (both on A-Deck).

Finally, the Forward Access Hatch has an extensible ladder that allows access to the ground from that hatch when the vessel has landed (See Forward Access Hatch description in A-Deck).

Local Sensors[edit]

The hull is studded with multiple micro-cameras and microphones so that the outside environment may be observed and monitored. This allows the bridge to see what is in the immediate proximity to the hull in a fully immersive VR view if needed. These sensors include:

  • Air-Pressure Sensor
  • Air-Speed Sensor
  • Accelerometer
  • Gas-Composition Mass-Spectrometer
  • Geiger Counter
  • Holographic Ultrasound Sonar
    • Directional Microphone
    • Ultrasound Speaker System
    • Public Address System
    • Motion Detector
  • Holographic Vision
    • Telescopic Vision x10
    • Light Intensification
    • Infra-Red to Ultra Violet Spectrum
    • IR/Visual Spectrum Lamps
  • Inertial Locator (linked to Laser Gyroscope and Accelerometer)
  • Laser Gyroscope
  • Laser Rangefinder
  • Microwave Doppler Radar
  • Electromagnetic Probe
  • Thermometer

Local Anti-Boarding Defence[edit]

Beneath each Fuel Scoop Nacelle, and above the main airlock, the ship has small hatches containing TL-13 Laser Rifles on deployment arms. Just forward of the Forward Access Hatch is an automatic grenade launcher in its own mini turret. (This may be reloaded through the Avionics Bay access hatch). These weapons may only be deployed on the authority of a recognised ships officer and are controlled from the Bridge and Engineering control stations only.

Physical Environment[edit]

Security & Surveillance[edit]

Internal Monitoring[edit]

The interior spaces of the entire ship are monitored every moment of every day by the Anti-Hijack software which records everything and keeps it for not less than 12 months. This is undertaken by a network of internal Holographic, Sonic and EM field sensors. Additionally, the air-quality sensors that are part of the air systems are monitored for signs of unwanted chemicals.

Passenger Space Security[edit]

This is visibly aimed as reassuring the passenger that they and their goods are safe. Their door have locks on that can be controlled by them. Their goods are safe in those rooms.

Crew Space Security[edit]

The Crew Space security is effectively aimed as protecting the ship against Piracy or Mutiny of the passengers. The Crew Spaces are off-limits to passengers except under escort, and access to the Bridge and Engineering stations requires passing at least two doors.

Life Support: Air[edit]

Air Mix[edit]

The MV Caroline is not really equipped to replicate non-standard atmospheres in any stateroom. Some small modifications can be achieved regarding temperature and humidity, and the gas mixes can be altered to a small degree, but lack of airlock doors on the staterooms does mean that there is going to be inter-mixing of room-specific air with that of the rest of the ship as the door opens.

Temperature Control[edit]

The temperature in the staterooms and main communal areas is generally maintained between 288 and 300 Kelvin. The largest issue with cooler temperatures is the condensation that is engendered and warmer temperatures can be physiologically dangerous to some Human and Vargr passengers. Within these boundaries, individual passengers are welcome to set the temperature in their staterooms as they see fit.

Life Support: Water[edit]

Plumbing[edit]

There are three separate plumbing systems: Fresh, Sullage and Sewerage. These will not be mixed. All require temperatures between 273 and 373 Kelvin to operate and are temperature controlled accordingly.

Fresh Water[edit]

This is stored in a 13.5 cubic metre tank near the forward landing leg. The water recycling process is a vital part of the fresh water supply as this tank holds well under 100 litres of water per person per day for all uses during a typical jump-transit.

Sullage[edit]

Water that has been used but is not sewerage, also called Grey-Water, forms the bulk of the source for recycling. This water is often contaminated by soaps and dirt and has to be filtered and sterilised before being returned to the fresh-water supply.

Sewerage[edit]

The sewerage (and food-waste) is fed to a composter which separates the liquid portion for recycling and the solids for off-loading at the next port.

Life Support: Housekeeping[edit]

Food, Drink and Packaging[edit]

The arrival of food and drink onto the ship in its packaging will see much of that packaging discarded at the entry port to prevent the accidental infestation of the ship by accompanying creatures.

The remainder of the comestibles and their packets/bottles, etc. will then be stored in the Ship's Locker, Galley or Pantry until used. A strict rotation of stocks is enforced.

After the food/drink is dispensed, the uneaten remains are fed to the Sewerage Composter, the undrunk remains to the Sullage Filters and the packets placed in the recycling storage for off-loading at the next port with appropriate disposal/recycling facilities.

Cleaning & Dusting[edit]

It is an inevitable part of life that the ship will accumulate dirt and dust - even though it spends half its life hermetically sealed. This task is undertaken in the passenger areas by the Stewards and in the Crew Quarters and engineering spaces by a rota of Crew members. Individual staterooms within the Crew Quarters are the responsibility of the residents.

Laundry[edit]

The Steward's Cuddy contains laundry facilities. These facilities are in use most days for the cleaning of passenger and crew linen and clothing. Crew are advised to check with the Stewards before utilising the washing machines on pain of ostracization or worse.

Life Support: Domestic Power[edit]

Circuitry[edit]

Each stateroom has its own ring-main for power with lighting also on a separate main circuit. Communal areas are generally also on separate ring-mains. Imperial Standard Domestic Power protocols are maintained. Converters may be required to allow Darrian, Sword Worlds, Zhodani or Vargr equipment to function. These may be borrowed from the Stewards.

Electrical Maintenance[edit]

There is a full electrical check that is undertaken after each stateroom is vacated to ensure that nothing has broken since the last check (usually lights), and to recover any items the passenger may have failed to take with them.

Engineering: Control Systems[edit]

See also Virtual Environment below.

Circuitry[edit]

The circuits for running the main engineering systems run via two separate channels (denoted "Port" and "Starboard") from the Bridge to the various engineering spaces via the ceiling of 'B-Deck'. These are unbroken fibre-optic cables and they do not pass through A-Deck at any point outside the Bridge and adjacent spaces.

The security control circuits run in parallel in the B-Deck ducting and connect to the door and port locking mechanisms on 'A-Deck', 'B-Deck' and the Fuel Deck.

Environmental control data fibres run in the same ducts as the security circuits. There are three separate control areas: Crew Quarters and Bridge; Passenger Quarters; and B-Deck.

Settings[edit]

Individual Staterooms may alter their environmental control settings locally, unless locked out by the Bridge.

Passenger Quarters settings are otherwise controlled from the Steward's Cuddy.

B-deck settings are controlled from the engineer's workstation in the Powerplant space or from the Bridge.

Engineering: Artificial Gravity and Inertial Dampers[edit]

Artificial Gravity[edit]

The ship's Artificial Gravity is provided via a gravitic-grid. This provides a constant gravity field within the space, and this field will be operable even if a local gravity field is also present.

The field can be set for +/-1.5G, but the net effect is intended to give a constant apparent gravity in the range 0G to 1.25G.

n.b. The Anti-Hijack systems can use this field to impede the progress of hostile intruders. This can pull the intruder to the ceiling at 1.5G and then to the floor at 1.5G and then the ceiling...Such measures are limited to specific entry-points - i.e. airlocks.

Inertial Dampers[edit]

The ship's inertial dampers are fitted as part of the same gravitic wall-grid used for the artificial gravity generators and inertial damping is applied via that grid.

Damping is applied via the GP-ID9901 sub-system of the manoeuvre drive and can offset the accelerations caused by that drive. Other accelerations due to collision, etc. are unpredictable and can only be damped once evaluated by the sub-system's accelerometer. There is a lag of several nano-seconds between the start/end of an unexpected acceleration and the time at which the responsive damping occurs, and this may result in unexpected jolts.

Accelerations above 6-G can be reduced by this system but not eliminated entirely.

Engineering: Power Distribution[edit]

Circuitry[edit]

The Engineering Power distribution circuitry collects energy from various sources (Powerplant, Emergency Powerplant, Batteries, Zuchai-Crystal Energy Sink Array[1] a.k.a. Jump-Capacitors, Port (External) Power Supply) and delivers it to the various high-power users (Manoeuvre Drive, Jump Drive, Lasers) and lower-power users (Sensors, EW Systems, Fuel Treatment Plant, Medical Bay, Life Support, Biosphere). It also converts some of the power for the domestic power system.

High-Pressure Air[edit]

The Vehicle Bay has fuel transfer facilities and thus the tools in this area area spark-free and air-pressure powered.

Virtual Environment[edit]

General[edit]

The MV Caroline runs a closed fibre-optic network (the Ship Control Network) for control systems and a separate secured fibre-optic network (the General Network) for communications and passenger entertainment/information. Some ship data is published from the closed network to the secured network.

Data and programs may only be transferred onto the closed Ship Control Network via the master access in the Computer Room adjacent to the Bridge on A-Deck.

The Autodoc in the medical bay is a stand-alone AI system.

The Transponder is a standard Imperial transponder and is a stand-alone system.

Interface[edit]

Ship[edit]

The Interface to the ship's computer system is based on Anglic. Any other language use requires the use of the appropriate translator software. The system can simultaneously interact with each internal control and information terminal (Each passenger and crew stateroom may register up to two information terminal sub-systems). It may also simultaneously process external communications messages passed for it's consumption and any transponder data requests.

While the Intellect Program is operating, the computer is able to interact verbally with the crew and passengers. The Intellect Program can interact verbally with up to 10 separate persons at one time in addition to the normal terminal inputs.

The ship, even when the Intellect Program is not operating, has the limited self-piloting skills required of an auto-pilot. With a landing beacon, the ship can even make an automated landing. Few Pilots would allow it to do so unsupervised.

Autodoc[edit]

The Interface to the autodoc's computer system is based on Anglic.

Transponder[edit]

The transponder will automatically respond with ID confirmations unless the transmission function is temporarily suspended by the ships officers. On doing so, it will message the ships officers with the details requested and sent. Manifest data requested will only be released on specific authorisation of the ships officers.

Personality[edit]

Ship[edit]

The ship's Intellect Program responds to the names "Ship" and "Caroline". It has the following statistics:

  • INT: 7 (+0)
  • EDU: 15 (+3)

Computer+3. Other skills are based on loaded Expert Programs.

In the General Network' the ship's Intellect Program exhibits a personality officially described as "Diplomacy and Tack Epitomised" (but described by the crew who have to live with it as "Obsequious"). In the Ship Control Network the personality used is described as "To the point".

Autodoc[edit]

The autodoc's Intellect Program responds to the name "Doc". It has the following statistics:

  • STR: 6 (+0)
  • DEX: 15 (+3)
  • INT: 9 (+1)
  • EDU: 12 (+2)

Medic+1

The autodoc's Intellect Program uses a personality described as "Friendly and Supportive".

Transponder[edit]

The Transponder has no personality!

Battlespace Management[edit]

Although the MV Caroline is a Yacht in Civilian service, the concentrated net worth aboard makes the ship a potential target for many agencies, corporations and/or individuals.

Given this premise, it is the responsibility of the crew to ensure that the space about the vessel is observed and the potential threats minimised and evaded. The basic premise of the ship design and crew philosophy is that the vessel, in space, should prevent rather than actualise dangerous outcomes and run rather than fight.

Strategic Intelligence[edit]

Strategic Intelligence is undertaken for the Ship via a number of contacts and corporations who are used to check out the creditworthiness of the potential clients and the political and commercial entanglements of their business with potentially dangerous groups.

Operational Intelligence[edit]

The dangers that can be expected to occur because of a specific route are part of the crew's pre-contract review of potential threats and the crew's general security review of the current planet and next leg as they arrive at each System.

Tactical Intelligence[edit]

The space immediately around the MV Caroline is the primary tactical region of interest and from which tactical intelligence can be drawn. The crew maintains a 24/7 sensor watch and will ping each and every contact for registration data. Suspicious and Doubtful contacts will be checked with the local spaceport (unless the spaceport is, itself, under suspicion).

Non-Lethal Options[edit]

Over 90% of traffic in a system will choose the shortest route to the nearest spatial region where a jump can occur successfully. These routes are the most likely haunt of Pirates and Corsairs, and a slightly longer route can keep the vessel out of the scan-range of these vessels.

Where diplomatic missions are for/with/to recognised states, those states may provide escort for foreign diplomats. Such escorts also tend to reduce risk.

It the event of suspicious contact, the acceleration of the MV Caroline can often allow that contact to be evaded.

Should contact be unavoidable, the EW and defensive systems aboard are designed to allow the vessel to delay the point at which damage is likely - hopefully for sufficiently long to reach the safety of a Port or Jump-Space.

Use of Force[edit]

The ship is bound by the Imperial Rules of War and by Imperial Admiralty Law. These have general provisions regarding what is a legitimate situation in which force may be used and what types of force may be applied.

Background and History[edit]

Construction & Launch[edit]

Launched in 1102 from the shipyards at Regina for an obscure company reputedly associated with Oberlindes Lines.

The precise value of the contract was commercially sensitive, but was estimated at between MCr 160 and MCr 180 by local ship-brokers.
