Merant is a high-population, pre-rich garden world with a billion or more sophonts in population size, a near-ideal utopian environment conducive to most sophonts, and still lacks adequate population to expand its economy to a rich status.
- Its economy and population are rapidly growing and living conditions are expected to quickly rise barring outside forces.
- This is a "low technology" world with technology competencies well below technology standards for Charted Space.
- It is a member of the Rimward Federation in the Demon's Eye Subsector of Far Home Sector, which is part of the Distant Fringe.

System Data
Serene-Merant System
The primary is Serene, an ordinary orange main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 0.352 Sols, a mass of 0.774 Sols and a diameter of 1.168 million km. The inner system consists of (I) a vacuum worldlet, and (II) a thin atmosphere hospitable world. (III) Merant orbits within the habitable zone and is designated the mainworld. (IV) a trace atmosphere worldlet, (V) a small gas giant, (VI) a small ice giant, (VII) a trace atmosphere iceworld, (VIII) an exotic atmosphere bigworld, and (IX) a vacuum worldlet form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.
(III) Merant
(III) Merant is designated the mainworld and orbits Serene at a mean distance of 0.64 AU (95.7 million km), within the habitable zone. It has an orbital period of 212 days 14 hours and a rotation period of 47.5 hours. The axial tilt is 17.5 degrees. Merant has a diameter of 11,777 km, a density of 6.16 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 1.03 G. The world is geologically active. Its atmosphere is rated as Standard, with a mean surface pressure of 1.01 bar and a composition of 78% nitrogen (N2), 21% oxygen (O2), and 1% argon (Ar), water vapor (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), neon (Ne) and other trace gases. Approximately 63% of the surface is covered in oceans of liquid water: average tidal ranges exceed 0.5m. Mean surface temperature: 15°C. The atmosphere is dynamic and weather systems, driven by the star and the oceans, drive across the globe. The climate is seasonal and weather patterns follow regular cycles during the local year.
Satellites:
Merant retains two natural satellites, both vacuum worldlets named Innet and Outree:
- (IIIa) Innet (UWP Y200000-0, orbiting at 40 Diameters/471,000 km).
- (IIIb) Outree (UWP G300000-0, orbiting at 55 Diameters/648,000 km).
Mainworld geography and topography
Total surface area: 436 million km², Land surface area: 166 million km², Water surface area: 270 million km². There are three major continents (temperate Orneida, mountainous Perserence and rugged Chomleigh), three minor continents (named Asto, Pent and Vestin) and numerous subcontinental landmasses, islands and archipelagos. The major bodies of water are the Arachnid Ocean, the Ocean of Wrecks, the Angel Sea and the Sea of Ice. Both poles are covered with large icecaps.
- The supergiant primary star of the Demon's Eye system and the huge Demon's Eye Nebula that surrounds it, lying a few parsecs to coreward-trailing, are clearly visible in the sky.
Native lifeforms
Merant is classified as a garden world: it has abundant and extensive native life that fills every available ecological niche. The local flora has a tendency towards broad tall stems and long narrow leaves: foliage is generally dark green in colour. Their metabolic functions power the process of atmospheric renewal. The majority of local fauna follows the body pattern Radial N-TSB-AL-LN-N, with exoskeletons and scum fluids. There are relatively few species of large land creatures but a huge variety of types massing less than a few kilograms. Most local lifeforms can be digested by humans with few problems but have a deeply unpleasant taste, generally inducing gagging and nausea.
History & Background (Dossier)
No information yet available.
World starport
Merant has a Class D Starport, a poor quality installation which has few of the expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
World technology level
Merant possesses a Technology Level of TL–5.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Telephone, radio, and television.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Electricity, hydrocarbon internal combustion, and the most fundamental atomic energy.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Ground cars or automobiles and tracked vehicles.
- Water: Large ships and submersibles with steel hulls.
- Air: Early aircraft including seaplanes and very early unmanned rockets.
World government
Merant has a Balkanized Government. There is no central world government. The world has several governments competing for control of the world. These may be allies, cooperating, competitors, or at war with each other.
