History & Background (Dossier)
History
Formation
Initially formed on Gabrael in 1138 as a federation of ships captains plying routes between the abandoned worlds of Million Subsector and the United Followers of Augurgh and Corfinium/Atsah. The group was unusual in that it was always a multi-racial organisation welcoming any starship whether Human (Regency, Vilani or Other), Vargr (Aekhu or other) or even Aslan crewed. What mattered was the pact of mutual support.
Survival
The Rose Brotherhood became a mutual-aid society in the face of Virus, keeping their ships running off the remains left by Vampire Fleets and deserted stations. As with the Souk Free Trader Collective, the survival of the group relied on careful notice of where members were going, and collective action for rescue/revenge when members didn't arrive. The Rose Brotherhood was beset by issues - some expected and some not. Virus was expected immanently at the time of formation and arrived with its cataclysmic effects. The Red Pelts were not expected, nor was the self-destructive attitude of some of the planetary governments.
1160s
The Rose Brotherhood was by this time operating across the Ian, Khouth, Million and Atsah Subsectors. It kept, mostly to small worlds with little Vampire activity, but dealt with some of the more unsavoury and Virus controlled planets through various means for supplies not otherwise available. Over 90% of its activities were designed to keep its ships and bases running and its crews fed. Very little could be spared to support the host planets, but that little support proved vital to those planets at the time. Some exploration was possible, and a scavenger expedition made unusual discoveries at Caulins Belt in 1165.
1200s
The Rose Brotherhood had survived until the new millennia and was one of those institutions that the expanding Regency encountered early in its move out of its shell.
As a ship based group, the brotherhood was able to weather the Empress Wave by the simple expedient of jumping over it and heading Coreward until a supportive population could be found.
