Description

Name

The MV Caroline is named for Lady Caroline Peters-Havasu, a diplomat of the Third Frontier War whose efforts in the Tuglikki Sector ensured the good treatment of so many Imperial prisoners held by the Vargr .

Registration

The MV Caroline was registered at Regina from 1102.

Statistics

Length Overall: 46m
Maximum Width: 25m
Height (landed, excluding aerials): 10m

An Armoured, Self-Sealing Crystaliron Hull reputed to be Psi-Shielded.

Drone Hanger

The various recreational and security uses of a remote sensor platform mean that the ship has available a single Advanced Probe Drone. This stored in a hanger on the upper hull. The APD can be deployed in space or in an atmosphere, but in an atmosphere it may only be deployed and recovered safely at sub-sonic speeds.

Bridge

Slightly altered from the standard Destiny Class, the 5-abrest seating is continued, but a captains seat - relying solely on holographic projections for control purposes - has been added behind. The seats allow the ship to operate with Laser-Gunner, Astrogator/Sensor Operator, Pilot, EW Officer and Sand-Gunner. The Bridge Coffeepot is located adjacent to the Laser-Gunner's station.

The Bridge Doors are fully secure and are generally kept shut. Opening the door requires the computer to confirm the identity of the person attempting the process. Additionally, a set of 4 locking pins can be manually engaged by the occupants that prevent the door opening electronically.

The bow of the bridge is made from and expensive, transparent diamond-crystal-matrix which gives the crew an excellent view while providing the protection equivalent to the crystal-iron used for the remainder of the vessel. There are also overhead sky-lights.

The rear of the bridge has been fitted with two secure lockers, and in the space in the 'eaves' above the bridge is the main avionics cabinet.

Forward Sensor Arrays

To port and starboard of the bridge are aerial bays for the main sensor suite.

Life Support Cabinet

Beyond the Bridge Fresher lies one of the life-support cabinets. This small room houses the majority of the atmosphere recycling equipment for the bridge and crew quarters.

This cabinet has 2000 man-hours of emergency oxygen in chemical-based self-contained oxygen generation units.

The starboard side fibre-optic network patch panel is in this room.

Bridge Fresher

This room contains toilet and wash basin but also contains stores for some of the more valuable parts that the ship is required to hold, and some of the emergency equipment that may be required by a damage-control party - including an emergency airlock and enough rescue-balls for the entire crew and passenger complement.

Computer Room

This room contains not only some of the the major processors for the ship-wide network of fibre-optic computer network, but also contains the port-side network patch panels.

A very small desk is provided for such electronics work as may be periodically required.

Crew Area

The yacht has a very poor provision for the crew's off-watch hours. A table for two, and a minimal coffee and food heating station. It does have a hand-basin though!. Cupboards at the coffee station contain crockery, cutlery, coffee, washing up materials and waste disposal/recycling collection.

Hydroponics Racks

The ship has two Hydroponics racks in the main circulation area - designed by the famous Regina gardener and horticulturalist Dansish Flores. These give both a pleasing spectacle for the travellers, and provide salad vegetables for the passengers and crew.

The planting and harvesting of the racks is a part of the steward's job - and the maintenance of the area must occur daily or the effectiveness of the rack starts to drop.

The racks are guaranteed for sustained accelerations of up to 2G and instantaneous accelerations for up to 20G - and air pressures from 500 to 1200kPa. Air CO2 levels should be held above 3% for the plants to grow efficiently. Temperatures in the cabin must be kept above 280K and below 330K for the best productivity.

Fuel Tankage

The MV Caroline stores parahydrogen fuel at 15K. 45dTons are stored in 'B' deck's fuel tanks.

The tanks are baffled against sloshing and internal valves allow the tankage to be isolated into sections of 10-15dTons in case of leaks or breaches.

Jump Drive

The MV Caroline utilises a custom General Products B-657 15dTon Jump Drive capable of propelling it through Jump Space for up to two parsecs. The drive is slightly overpowered for the exact displacement and thus uses 30dTons of fuel for each parsec achieved.

Manoeuvre Drive (Port and Starboard)
Fuel Purification Plant (Port and Starboard)

The MV Caroline uses four of the General Products FTC-15 Fuel Treatment Modules to allow it to process a total of 80dTons of unrefined fuel per day. The modules are provided with electrolytic hydrogen extraction nozzles than can be deployed in any body of water for collection of fuel from that source.

Fuel Scoops (Port and Starboard)

The Fuel Scoops allow the ship to take on hydrogen from Gas-Giants. The scoops capture the gas from the atmosphere, and cool it to 15K, converting Orthohydrogen to Parahydrogen in the process. This gas will be contaminated by other chemicals and, while it may be used as a fuel directly, will normally be cleaned by the Fuel Purification Plant before final storage in the Fuel Tanks.

Fuel Deck

General

This deck is not intended for access by living beings other than travelling through by lift or climbing past on the forward ladder.

Forward Access Ladder

See Forward Access Hatch on Deck A

Chin Turret

Identical to "Aft Laser Turret on Upper Hull.

Fuel Tankage

See Fuel Tankage on Deck B

There are 33 dTons of fuel storage on this deck.

Landing Gear Well (x4)

Each of the 4 landing gear wells holds one landing leg. See External Fittings for details of the landing gear itself.

Each landing gear well is enclosed by a weather cover and is not normally accessible from within the ship. A vacuum-tight maintenance hatch is provided for maintenance access from B-Deck. n.b. The well is not airtight and thus the hatch is normally held shut by the internal air-pressure in addition to the latches.

=Main Lift

See Main Lift on Deck A

External Fixtures and Fittings

Landing Gear

The landing gear is based on a 4-point touch-down and can operate successfully at ground speeds up to 0.72kph, with safe landing speed being set at 0.5kph. Vertical speeds of up to 7kph (2m/s) can be easily absorbed. Above 14kph (4m/s) the landing legs may damage the shock-absorbers.

Port Services

When docked at a starport the vessel looks to take food, drink, fuel, air, water, data, power and to discharge sewerage and other waste and recyclable products.

To avoid the accidental mixing of incompatible supplies (e.g. water and power), the ports for these supplies are separated. The Water inlet valve is by the front port landing leg. Sewerage discharge valve is by the starboard front leg. Fuel loading valves are mid-way down the port side, both data and power ports are by the rear port landing leg.

Food, drink, etc. for the purser's department are normally loaded via the main lift.

Jump Grid

The MV Caroline utilises a standard Imperial square grid pattern in Lanthanum with each connector node utilising the tried and trusted General Products 84413 activator. This yields a jump-field at a distance of 2.828m from the hull exterior. Each activator is dual-wired on the conventionally named "Port" and "Starboard" jump-power distribution circuits.

Electrolytic Hydrogen Extraction Nozzles

The two outer pods each contain, in their forward sections, two fuel processors. These can draw on and convert water to Hydrogen fuel utilising Electrolytic Hydrogen Extraction Nozzles. These nozzles are connected to the Fuel Processing Plant using hoses that are reeled within the pods and can deploy into a body of water up to 50m from the pod.

Background and History

Launched in 1102 from the shipyards at Regina for an obscure company reputedly associated with Oberlindes Lines.

The precise value of the contract was commercially sensitive, but was estimated at between MCr 150 and MCr 170 by local ship-brokers.
