Mentaska's second companion, Plaskin, is an ordinary red main sequence star – it lies approximately 3,200 AU from Mentaska. It retains its own dwarf companion star called Phen, which orbits Plaskin at a mean distance of 1.1 AU: Phen retains a single small gas giant world. Plaskin has a single rocky planet orbiting at a mean distance of 0.2 AU, a large gas giant called Idris orbiting at 5.2 AU, and three outer rocky worlds: a commercial hydrogen processing facility is located in the upper atmosphere of Idris. An extensive planetoid belt with a high percentage of icy bodies lies at a mean distance of 80 AU from Plaskin and marks the system fringe. System Data

The Ras Tennol system actually consists of two separate star systems lying about 3200 AU apart.

Mentaska System

The system primary is Mentaska, a red giant star that retains a miniscule dwarf companion called Dollen in a close orbit. Mentaska has a family of nine rocky worlds: the seventh of these, (VII) Ras Tennol, orbits the primary at a mean distance of 19.6 AU, within the stars habitable zone. An extensive planetoid belt primarily consisting of rocky bodies circles Mentaska at a mean distance of 150 AU and marks the system fringe. Most of the worlds in the Mentaska system, including Ras Tennol, retain satellites.

Plaskin Subsystem

The far companion is Plaskin, an ordinary red main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 0.0136 Sols, a mass of 0.3626 Sols, and a diameter of 551,000 km. Plaskin and Phen, the distant companion, lie at a mean separation of 1.13 AU (169 million km) and have an orbital period around their barycenter of 362 days. (I) a trace atmosphere iceworld, and (II) an exotic atmosphere radworld form the inner part of the outer system. Orbital positions (III) through (VI) are unavailable due to the presence of the companion star. (VII) a large gas giant, (VIII) a vacuum iceworld, and (IX) a dense icy planetoid belt form the outer part of the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

Phen Subsystem

The distant companion is Phen, a dwarf star. It has a luminosity of 0.00003 Sols, a mass of 1.11 Sols, and a diameter of 8,500 km. Phen and Plaskin, the far companion, lie at a mean separation of 1.13 AU (169 million km) and have an orbital period around their barycenter of 362 days. (I) a trace atmosphere iceworld, and (II) a small gas giant form the outer system. The gas giant retains satellites.

Mainworld Data

(VII) Ras Tannol

Ras Tannol has a diameter of 8000 km, an unusually high density of 7.45 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.85 G. It has a nitrogen-oxygen atmosphere rated as standard, with a mean surface pressure of 1.1 bar. Despite being rated as standard, Ras Tennol's atmosphere contains very little moisture and breathing it for long periods without artificial assistance can lead to a variety of respiratory problems. The atmosphere is active and powerful dust storms, lit by near constant internal lightning, are common. Surface temperatures are uniformly high, averaging a lethal 55ºC. They are even higher around the equator but are marginally more bearable close to the poles, averaging around 30ºC.

Satellites: (VIIa, VIIb Ras Tennol)

  • (VIIa) Kaled: Mean Orbital Distance: 125,000 km, UWP: F301417-B, Ice-Mining Facility.
  • (VIIb) Morill: Mean Orbital Distance: 600,000 km, UWP: F200368-B, Military Base.

Mainworld Geography & Topography

Ras Tannol is a desert world and has practically no standing water on its arrid, parched surface. The northern hemisphere is taken up by the rugged Tannolin Highlands, the equatorial regions are covered by shifting, wind-scoured dune seas and the Grand Neg, while the southern hemisphere is dominated by the Ras, a huge and ancient impact crater surrounded by a vast fractured landscape of canyons and ravines. The only surface water on the world is the Salvation Sea, a hot and brackish lake located in the deepest part of the Ras.

Native Lifeforms

Ras Tennol has no native lifeforms. The interior of the Ras and the fractured terrain around it does, however, support an extensive, self-supporting ecosystem made up of accidentally introduced species. Much of the flora is microscopic, though there are a few extremely hardy point producers able to extract moisture from the atmosphere. Most of the fauna found on the world is small - typically less than 1 kg in weight - and is largely made up of pests, vermin, former pets and stowaways that have escaped from visiting starships.

World Starport

Ras Tennol has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

  • Peace footing (government modifier x1.15). Port Capacity: 80,500 dTons

Almost all of the fuel available at Ras Tennol's starport is imported by Gas Traders from the Plaskin sub-system. Ships registered at the port benefit from substantially discounted fuel prices.

World Technology Level

Ras Tennol possesses a Technology Level of TL–12 or TL-C in Hexadecimal Notation.

World Government

Ras Tennol is governed by an Impersonal Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government takes another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy dictates government policy and its execution. Government leadership is reduced to little more than figureheads and does not select the bureaucracy leadership or its members. The government of Ras Tennol is the Fugle, headed by the Prime Fugleman and his supporting staff. It is an extensive bureaucracy divided into different offices of state but dominated by the Directorate of Trade and the Chamber of Taxation. Police duties on the world are carried out by hired Security organisations.

World Military

Ras Tennol is a major Security clearinghouse and an important operational base for StarMerc organisations performing escort duties along the various Star Lanes that meet at the system.

World Economy

Shipbuilding and ship maintenance.

Finance and Brokerage.

Ras Tennol lies at the junction of the Outland Run and New Border Star Lanes.

Trade Data

A number of important companies have their headquarters at Ras Tennol:

World Demographics

Approximately 70 million (99.7% of the population) humans of Terran descent.

200,000 (0.3% of the population) other sophonts, largely Hoppers, though with small communities of Edur and Temelik.

World Culture

Historical Data

2255AD. Humans settle the Distant Fringe region.

World Timeline

  • 2260AD. Ras Tennol first surveyed.
  • 2950AD. Records of the first permanent settlement on Ras Tennol, a small community of mineral prospectors operating within the Ras crater.
  • 3730AD. World depopulated following the arrival of the Voyagers.
